Man, I am still dogging on it earlier in this thread when I called it Battle for Terra II. I will see it if it has 90 percent or higher fresh rating but probably nothing less. It took me Star Trek to have a 95 percent fresh rating to watch that.

I might have been the first to mention ferngully, but I'm still seeing Avatar opening weekend. I don't buy the press's hyperbole since people's expectations have been pretty low, but we'll see.

Let’s not forget about this thread too, lots of crow will be eaten! Not me though, I knew this was gonna be special the very moment I saw the first teaser......I then knew it was gonna be a stroke of genius when I saw the official trailer. :D

I’m somewhat proud to have predicted a long time ago not only the best CGI, but a great critical response, it being very popular/high grossing and some Oscar nominations, all which are looking like a sure thing! Who’s crazy now bitches?
 
Well, I've been waiting 12 long years for this film. Being able to see a brand new James Cameron film in just 7 days is going to be surreal and unforgettable. I will savor every last second, and then I can die a happy man. I've suffered through over a decade of sub-par action movies. There were some good ones along the way (the LOTR trilogy, Batman Begins etc), but even with the good ones I couldn't help but think, 'yeah, it's good, but it ain't no James Cameron movie.' But, we can finally rejoice, as the king of the world has finally returned to reclaim his throne and show everyone exactly how it is done.

P.S. I hope this film causes Michael Bay to just give up already and retire.

Am I alone in finding the CG during the bow/arrow part a bit jarring? Not to say it isn't impressive, but it definitely didn't help suspend my disbelief. I suppose if it's stuck in the middle of a 2.5 hour movie on a 3D screen, that's not as much of a problem.

To me, it's just a reminder that there's still work to be done with special effects like this. It could be better, as no one would deny, but so many parts that I saw in the trailer seemed near-perfect to me. The youtube clip above was different somehow.

Same here, going from human to CG was really, well, disappointing to be honest.

Really? I only preferred the teaser's music, but aside from that, I thought it was an insipid amalgamation of clips. It didn't matter though, since Avatar Day happened one day after. n.n

Well I guess Sculli is giddy as fuck now.

Anyway is this movie still spectacular if you watch it in 2D? Because I would feel guilty since it's meant to be seen in 3D.
 
The entire Pandora featurette just played in an ad break on Australian TV. :lol
I walked out of the room. I'll watch all that stuff after I've seen the movie.

I just saw Empire's 5/5 review. I have no reason to doubt this film is quality apart from that review. I simply don't trust Empire reviews at all.

Empire reviews are notoriously inconsistent, over inflated for big fan boy projects and then sensible and fair for others.

They gave Mission To Mars, the worst film I have ever seen, 3/5 IIRC. They then corrected it for the video review giving it a single star.

None the less, the good buzz if building.

If JC can get Devin Farci to write a glowing review of Avatar I'll officially be blown away, on a number of levels. :D

In Empire's case. Yes.

I had a good mind to mount legal action against them after I paid to see Mission To Mars after reading their review.

In the words of one Mr. Jeff Albertson. Worst. Movie. Ever.

As I said, their reviews are not very reliable to say the least.

But does that mean Empire just likes a lot of crap or... are you saying they shit on good movies like No Country For Old Men, and praise the real shit like Transformers 2? It just seems improbable that a critic would have such an extreme outlook on film... without it being some intentional joke or ploy or something.

The Grauniad is not the paper it was. Their books coverage, for example, has not so much slid downhill as outright plummeted.

No offense, but I hate you for reminding me this movie existed.

I read the Guardian's negative review, and I'm not sure why it rated so low. Seems like he knocked the movie down for things he should have known on the way in. It's like slamming Fast and Furious for being about street racing.

No offense taken. The sight of the rescuing astronauts 'curing' Don Cheadle's madness (caused by being alone on Mars for months and months) by just shaving his beard and cutting his comical afro will haunt me forever.
