95% seems like a awfully biased figure honestly. While it's true that 3D screens are significantly less for obviously reasons, pretty much every major cinema chain has a 3D screen in most cinemas now. They're not going to be showing Avatar on every single one of their screens either, but they're definitely be showing it on the 3D screen.

In fact, for the 95% figure to be anywhere close to accurate, if the the movie opens on 3000 screens, then it would be only showing in 150 3D screens nationwide. Is that remotely reasonable to you? :P

Absolutely, and this is being touted and hyped as a revolutionary 3D spectacle, so I think people will naturally feel like they are missing out if they see this in 2D.

not that this is any indication..but I posted a link on Facebook with a positive review of Avatar, and so far every comment is "This movie looks terrible" and "I don't care about seeing this at all"

Apparantly the trailers are not helping this movie as much as they should. Its going to take a LOT of positive word of mouth to change some haters minds.

Of course 95% is just a number out of my ass. Its probably something closer to 80%. Also, its not just about screens as you are stating, but also attendance. For some anecdotal evidence, my local theatre is showing Avatar in 2D in 3 theatres, and in 3D in 1 for opening weekend. 10+ 2D showings are sold out, and none of the 3D ones are.

You didn't say anything about attendance though, you said that 95% of screens would be showing it in 35mm. Which was so full of shit I just had to call you out on it. :lol

Looks like people's minds are going to be blown even more when they do inevitably see it.
 
I think DanielPlainview mentioned that the movie is opening in 16,000 screens worldwide(i may not be entirely right about that, don't shoot me crazy irfan!), there's about 5000 3D screens around the world, so the percentage may in fact be closer to James Cameron's estimate. :P

I'm not sure about that, as the trailers omit any mention of the 3Dness. I'm actually surprised some people think it's not gonna be shown in 2D screens. If anything I'm seeing Fox and Cameron heavily downplay the 3D aspect of the movie lately.

Im looking at my original post now, and yeah, what I should have said was "it doesnt matter, because 95% (or 80%, whatever) of people seeing the movie will see it in 2D".

*I* think I *might* be missing out only because I've read about how much effort Cameron and crew put into the 3d aspect of things. But if I was only going off what the marketing was touting it as, which marketing has done for many other movies before, I'd be taking it with a huge grain of salt.

Not to mention people have had a number of opportunities by now to see movies in 3d and that's going to factor in too.

Yeah I actually agree with you that unless the word of mouth is like, insane and like nothing ever before, most people will WATCH the movie in 2D. Maybe more than 80% even.

LOL, that was like 10 pages ago. Yeah, I always said that if the film starts to get great critical reviews my hype train would turn around..or at least start moving.

I still dont think it will come close to Titanic numbers, or be the biggest movie of the year, but I am much more excited to see it now then I was.

I saw the same thing about Transformers 2. In fact, very few people thought anything but negative to indifference for it and look where that went. Transformers 2 did have an interesting trailer while the TV ones for Avatar are less than mind blowing to me.

Anyway, I always have to knock a peg or two off of internet anti-hype since that kind of shows the level of positive interest amongst the general public when there is a large number of haters commenting too.
 
Kermode said he was watching Avatar tonight. Urgh I don't want to have to wait a full week for his review.
 
In my experience the Guardian give very critical reviews. It's very love or loathe with them.

Also I just heard two great "Avatar is like ..." descriptions which made me crack up but they could be considered spoilers so I wont mention them.

that didnt last long. I predict a rating average of 70% once everything is said and done.

EDIt...wasnt Guardian one of the first sites to say the film wasn't terrible? I expected at least a 3 star review. 2/5 stars is pretty low, even if the film is only average.

I'd say mid to high 80s.

You gotta remember that was one negative review and the positive ones just don't stop coming.

It wasn't the same person writing, most of their coverage of the premier seemed quite positive apart from this review, it really is just one guy's opinion.

I'd say 81-85% I think some others would share that guy's views.

I think it will be impossible for a movie like this to score higher than 75%. There is too much going against it. The budget, the genre, Cameron's bombast, expectations, etc. Too many people will have built up hostility to some aspect of it to give it a fair shake and some will just pan it for the early clicks.

In the end, AVATAR is not the kick-ass, mind-blowing James Cameron movie I was hoping for, but it's a perfectly serviceable sci-fi adventure that's well worth seeing, despite it's flaws. While I doubt this will catch on like TITANIC, it's still good to have James Cameron back directing movies, and I hope we don't have to wait another twelve years for his next film.

Nice to see this movie isn't indestructable...hype returning to normal pessimistic levels..:lol
 
We don't really need to see any more reviews, do we? A  general consensus has already formed: the story lacks originality but the execution and the engaged actors make up for it, and the special effects are the most impressive yet seen to date.
 
Several respectable critics have already opined with their positive opinions on the movie. Any attempt to trivialize the early reviews as coming from a pack of hyperbolic fanboys is demonstrably sad.

Really wasn't hyped after seeing the teasers and trailers, but I'll probably consider seeing this in theatres if enough of my friends recommend it.
