its about to drop to to the high 80s. some douchebag changed his review to negative so now it has 3 negative reviews

Yeah, there's also a critic split over the movie and they've counted it as negative. But whatever, I'm sure it will even out into 80s or so in the end.

:lol you didnt REALLY expect 100% praise right?

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying the thread title score is incongruent with the Tomatometer and seems silly to have there since its going to constantly shift this early on. But whatever!

I still have no idea what I think about this movie. Right now, I'm not planning on seeing it in a theater.

The closest digital theater (not even imax) to me is two hours away. I have not been impressed with Real3D to care enough to drive that far to see Avatar in 3D. However, just knowing that it's in 3D, there's no way in hell I'll see it in our shitty local one.

Right now it's like like 2D bluray unless someone can point me to articles explaining how this 3D will magically be better.

* I've only seen Final Destination and My Bloody Valentine in Real3D so maybe those weren't the definitive flicks to show of the technology.

I don't know..pretty much every review talks about how 3D is the way to see this..so Im not sure why you are missing the words that are directly in front of you..half of the quotes on Rotten Tomatoes mention the word 3D in them for shits sake :lol

EDIT...Also the 3D in Final Destination and Bloody Valentine were mroe gimmicks...if you saw BeoWolf or Christmas Carol you would have a better understanding on how much it can make a difference.

They also predicted TDK would be nominated...wait, it was. For everyone that worked on the film EXCEPT Chris Nolan!

So Final Destination and My Bloody Valentine were good enough to see at a theatre in 3D...but AVATAR isn't?

...I don't know man... :lol

seriously. those moives aren't worth seeing in 2D let alone 3D..people are so strange.

So, simple question: What's the best type of 3D theater to see this in? Imax 3D? Real-D? I've already gathered that the Dolby 3D is not the way to go.

A two hour drive down midwest Illinois backroads in the middle of winter is not fun. We almost died going to MBV between the icy roads and the Garmin fucking up.

I get your point though. :D

IMAX 3D if you want better sound, scope and brightness. Real-D (only if its digital) if you want a slightly steadier, crisper 3D image.

You won't get the full IMAX experience from this movie since none of it was shot on IMAX film, the movie you should have popped that cherry with was The Dark Knight. It had amazing IMAX scenes. But it will look really cool with a screen that big, no doubt. This movie just won't utilize the whole surface of it, that's all.

I am going across town to see this at an IMAX myself though, and yes it is worth it, especially for a 3D movie.
Hmm... actually, I'm curious about that. Is it that noticeable when it doesn't fill the entire screen, in a darkened theater? I'd have to imagine it's not that big a deal with an IMAX screen since it's so huge regardless, but I certainly wouldn't know as someone who hasn't seen a movie at an IMAX yet.

Ultimately I'm guessing/hoping that the sheer visual beauty of Avatar, compounded by the 3D effects, will mean that you probably won't even notice. Some of the reviews have basically said that they stopped noticing the 3D after a while, not because it wasn't striking, but because it blends in so naturally and isn't all in-your-face.

But yeah, I should have gone to see TDK at an IMAX. I was on the verge to but my friends ended up wanting to go to a regular theater since there's a decent Regal close to where we all live that we usually go to. Certainly would've been quite a treat to see the Joker bank robbery in glorious IMAX definition.

Hmm, Regal Cinemas near me have "Digital 3D" but that's all it specifies. IMAX theaters are a bit more out of the way for me so if it's "RealD" then that's fine, but I'm still trying to figure out which system they are using.

Saw it at the Burbank 3d IMAX for Avatar day, and booked tickets last month for the same theater. I refused to see it at any other 3d theater, since what I saw from Avatar day in the same place was so damn amazing. After the word got out, nearly every person I know is going to the same showing. Gonna have between 20-30 people waiting in like at 8pm for a 10:10pm Friday night show. It's gonna be so grandiose, I can't wait. :D
You should have got tickets for the citywalk, that's a real IMAX.

Here's a tip for anyone going to IMAX for the first time - sit as far back as you can. There's a reason why the very back rows fill up first. If you're too close it can be hard to watch. I don't even know why they bother having the first 5-10 rows, it must be unwatchable from there.

I think my amc has an "imax" something or other. Like right now they have A Christmas Carol in Disney Digital 3d and the other version is An IMAX 3D experience. What could this be? I know they don't have the huge IMAX screens so what is this?

Hah I just discovered while searching around that there's a new IMAX 3D theater only about 10 minutes away from me that I didn't even know about! Well that settles it, that's where I'll be...

do you have to see this movie in 3d to get the whole experience?

the "whole" experience? I would say definitely. If you want a satisfying experience then there is nothing wrong with 2D. Try for 3D if you can.

Just bought my ticket. There are some nice perks to living in the DC area - some pretty decent availability for stuff like IMAX, as well as easy access to theaters in either DC, Maryland or VA due to the Beltway.

And I have to say, as someone who's never gone to see either an IMAX film or a 3D film (much less both at the same time), I was expecting the ticket to cost more than $15. That's barely above typical 2D, shitty screen prices these days.

I'm excited. Haven't experienced anything 3D since probably Kings Dominion back sometime in the mid-90s, and I've never experienced IMAX at all. I'm fairly certain I picked the perfect fucking movie to pop those dual cherries.

Which theater in the DC area are you watching it at?

I don't need medical cards. I live in Holland. ;p

And I'm definitely going to see this movie next week. Friends of mine always gets headache when watching 3D movies, so I'll be seeing the 2D version. :(

Well I can't top that....does Holland have Fried Chicken and Waffle houses?

AW MAN you should totally watch the movie on heroin and just knock your "never done's" right out the park.

Hmmm, so amongst the ILM crew gear options is a RDA coffee mug. I might have to spring for that one.

Haha god dammit.

I just looked up the theater I bought the tickets for (AMC Tyson's Corner) and apparently it's a LIEMAX. Then again, there doesn't seem to be anything close enough that I'd actually care to drive to as far as legitimate screens. I'm not going to fucking Virginia Beach during winter to watch a movie.

Fun shit. Even the DC area can't catch a break.

Liemax at least use digital screens for the most part. If you can't go in proper IMAX for the first time, LIEMAX is definitely the next best option.

Would you recommend REALD over a non-digital but big screen IMAX?
