Classy

Armond White also heaped praises on Transformers 2.

Correct. You're good at this.

In ten or however many years' time, if all films and television shows are being made in 3D, I'll acknowledge it was as great a leap as black and white to colour was and that movies like Avatar were the root of it.
10 years after color came on the scene there were still lots of black and white films being made, and it took a lot longer for tv to catch up.

It was a slow, gradual transition, just like 3D has been so far and will continue to be.

All indicators point to 3D TV becoming available much quicker than color TVs did.

Oh my god, let's just turn this thread into Armond White review quotes...

"Through B-movie audacity, Statham and Anderson heighten Death Race into a skull-crusher and a mind-bender. But you’ll need a keen movie sense to recognize their underappreciated talents."

Yeah, there were still lots of black and white movies into the mid-60's, though the scales probably started to tip in favor of color by the late 50's. The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939.

Also, people here need to stop reminding me how great it looks in 3D and tell me if it looks good on a regular movie screen, too, because that's how I'm gonna watch it the first time, unfortunately. Makes me sad.

edit: my bad, double post

Also according to Mr. White, 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry' is a "modern classic" as well. There should be laws against these kind of people...

Watch wizard of oz in color, and then watch it in black and white. Same shit.

I posted this once before, but Ebert's summary takedown of Aramond White was spot-on.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/08/in_defense_of_armond_white.html

On Thursday night I posted in entry in defense of Armond White's review of "District 9." Overnight I received reader comments causing me to rethink that entry, in particular this eye-popping link supplied by Wes Lawson. I realized I had to withdraw my overall defense of White. I was not familiar enough with his work. It is baffling to me that a critic could praise "Transformers 2" but not "Synecdoche, NY." Or "Death Race" but not "There Will be Blood." I am forced to conclude that White is, as charged, a troll. A smart and knowing one, but a troll.

You can even watch it in both settings in the same viewing! And you don't even have to adjust the visual settings! Hmm, wonder if they did that for a reason.
Which you wouldn't have noticed had you watched a black & white print, or watched it on a black and white tv, which is precisely my point.

You would when they sing follow the yellow brick road.

Shit.. 3D makes no difference to me as I cannot view 3d as i suffer from Amblyopia in my right eye.

i hope that wizard of oz post was a joke post..it's always been in color.

So what you're saying is just because the TV is wank, it doesn't hurt the experience of the film? So watching 2001 on a wristwatch as appose to a 65mm print at the IMAX is an equal experience?

True you wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't know it was supposed to be in color, but you wouldn't be watching it the way it was meant to be seen. And give anyone the option of whether the want to see it in color or black and white and everyone will chose color.

Not saying I don't in some ways agree with you, but the Wizard of Oz was a terrible example.

What I am saying is that watching Avatar in 2D would be like watching an all black & white version of Wizard of Oz. The new technology used in the film is integral to it, but taking that away wouldn't necessarily change the content of the film.

they dont make those anymore...havent for years.

We had one when I was really young. It was our second TV, and there was always a fight between me and my sister who would get to watch the color TV. We had to alternate hours or nights or something :(

:lol :lol :lol

Someone just recently said to me "when did they update it in color? I know it was in black and white when I was a kid."

My parents still have one (well, beside their normal tv). Don't think you can hook up a DVD-player to it :P

I don't totally agree, the Wizard of Oz isn't different for it's technological changes, it's still shot in the same way, Avatar isn't. However, on the face of it, it makes some sense, but I'd still argue watching Wizard of Oz in black and white would be crap in comparison to colour, and I think watching Avatar in 2D is not going to even come close to 3D, from what I've seen, that's true.

an RF modulator and maybe something else from THE SHACK would make it doable I would think.

How does that differ from Avatar? It was meant to be seen in 3D.

N'gai does movie reviews now?

Not to derail this, but I think N'Gai had a point with the whole RE5 thing. Taken in context, what he wrote made sense to me and he approached it from a logical point of view. What this other guy wrote is complete rubbish.

I totally agree, the shit that came from his statement was awful, but N'Gai's original thoughts were fairly true I thought. He didn't deserve the shit he got for it.

yes..a few pages back...sadly we are back on the 3D isn't necessary subject despite every reviewer mentioning how great the 3D was in the film. :lol

Saw it at AVATAR day on IMAX3d, it fucks your eyeballs in an orgasmically wonderful experience. Let's move on...

Isn't an Oscar Best Picture nomination guaranteed with 10 potentials now?

I don't know if a Best Pic nomination is guaranteed, but it's probably a safe bet.

Seems like he pretty much got it on spec this time, but I think the Hurt Locker will take the award.
I'd say that the backlash directed toward the Academy for awarding films that not many have seen is at a fever pitch after the last few years. As evidenced by the doubling of Best Picture hopefuls this year, the Academy seems to want to atone for this and what better way than to give Avatar the award (if it does well enough at the box office of course).

I like the way this man thinks.

I've been anxious to see it for some time. Going to make sure I get the DVD sometime this week.

Fucking Kate from Lost is in it.

It's actually just an excellent film, it's surprisingly nonjudgmental for a war film, it has a very interesting non-3 act form, it's well written, the acting is amazing. It's pretty intense.

It's a badass war movie about Badass soldiers doing badass things. It's more focused on tension than all out action though. I honestly don't know why it didn't get a larger marketing push because it could have easily appealed to the mainstream.

Armond White hated Avatar? Alright, I think I can finally gear myself down to see this Friday.

Edit: I also see that he somehow managed to bring in the Iraq War, Racism, and 9/11 into his review. A great job as usual.

lol, the guy that ran that "mounting evidence that avatar will suck" article eats his crow

An Apology: Avatar Amazingly Does Not Suck

To all our comrades in arms on the Avatar Sucks barricades. Our fight was brave. Our cause was noble. In some way, I'll figure out later, we can claim this was a moral victory. But the time has come to lay down our arms and return to our pastures and couches. It has been a honor to serve with you all and history will honor our valor and our sacrifice. But the war has ended. And we are losers.

http://gawker.com/5427160/an-apology-avatar-amazingly-does-not-suck

same people that ran that early review from an 'insider' about Avatar's 3d being vomit inducing:lol
