Tension you could cut with a knife.

Great characters, and no music ruining scenes, i wish more films didn't feel the need to have overbearing music to help along a scene. A man in his bomb suit with some cutters and the soft blowing sound of the wind is more than enough.

But yeah see it. Don't expect an action film it's slow and it works for that,if you're one of those people who have film ADD i'd give it a pass.

I watched The Informer the other day and thought that was an amazing film with some amazing choice of shots and superb acting. I can get through any movie really and appreciate them. The only thing I'm unsure of really is the Middle Eastern setting. I'm kinda tired of the Middle Eastern War set piece.

edit: WAIT.. Ralph Fiennes AND Guy Pearce is in this!? Sold.

Fuck! Just checking out the IMAX sessions this weekend (it opens today here in Aus) so I can check when would be best to book for my second viewing and all sessions are either sold out, or only the front few rows are left!

Damn, here seats are first come first serve.
What does the interface look like when you select seats?
Just curious.

What did you think boy!

WTF is extracted? Does that mean they cropped the 16/9 to get the scope version?
Extracted just means took, they took the scope from the 16:9 which assuming he doesn't want a world of horrid distortion and artifacts, they probably cropped it yeah.

I just wasn't sure with all of the new tech used that maybe they had some other technique available. Algorithms to "clone tool" some extra scenery to the sides to get a wider picture or some other weird crap.

Seems weird that Cameron would allow that if true.
Not really. It was shot in 1.78:1 since it's video, but it was framed it for scope. It's only in the taller ratio at IMAX so it fills more field of vision on their screens.

So only IMAX has the full height?

But he kept saying the 1.78 ratio was needed because of the 3D, so I'm surprised it's not also being employed at non-IMAX 3D screenings. It would seem to me that Cameron would now feel that only IMAX viewers are getting the proper version of the movie.

He obviously changed his mind.

In one of the featurettes, you can see the monitor Cameron is watching shows a 2.35:1 crop, so he seems to have shot it for that ratio. Later on, he decided that 16X9 was better for the 3D version, but that plan seems to have been dropped.

Another rotten review added. 10 rotten with 57 fresh. Seems disproportionate.
i love the variation in reviews for this. seems to be a love/hate thing. i can't actually see how people could walk out of it anything less than blown away, but everyone's different ;) that armond guy's review is an obvious troll, however.

Considering the budget, I'll be shocked if this thing breaks even. Unless there is a massive ship with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio involved I doubt we'll be seeing a profit either

At this point I'd say that it’s a certainty that it will. A few weeks ago I predicted its worldwide gross will be $850,000,000. I'm sticking by that, and I wouldn't be surprised if it made more!

There's still a lot of positive reviews out there (such as Rolling Stone, which is from yesterday morning) that haven't been picked up. Not sure what their method is, but it seems like Avatar is heading for a 85-90% reading.

The split seems fairly predictable, whether the conventional story and characters outweigh the style and visuals. I'm surprised it's as positive as it has been.

I do wonder if 3D films will see the kind of long term runs as films did back in the day. The reason things like Gone with the Wind have so massively out performed Titanic is because they didn't have any home video system, so it got showed and rerun all the time. Now 3D is really here, most people have no, or wanky 3D at home. I could see that helping 3D films in the short term.

Only the IMAX versions are in 16X9.

Have we gotten confirmation of that from people that went to the premiere(which was in dolby3d)?

edit: I just glanced at the picture in the previous page. That is some real stupid shit from Cameron, my RealD theater has 16:9 screen. :| The "negative space" when I watched A Christmas Carol was a bit distracting. Definitely messed with the immersion. You so stupid Camewrong.

It seems like every negative review is being added, while about 50 more positive ones are still out there.

Actually kind of excited for this now that it's coming out in a few days. Going to be my first 3D movie too. Definitely taking the advice of so many and going the Dolby Digital 3D way. That's the good one right? I really don't know what to expect 3D wise. I've heard people talk about it but I'm having a hard time putting it in perspective. Should be fun!

Anyways, plan on going Saturday. Hope it's not super crazy and I don't have to wait in line or any bullshit like that.

It seems like it, but I hesitate to call conspiracy. At any rate, by Saturday after release they usually have everything up, so it's just a matter of waiting to see where it lands. But I've rarely seen a percentage move that much once 60 or so reviews are in.

Looks like I'm going to see it on Friday with my wife, in a Real 3D theater. Just need to finalized the babysitting plans. :D

Dolby is the worst way you could experience. Any of the alternative formats are better than Dolby as has been mentioned countless times in this and many other threads by many.

oh.... ok :lol Guess I got it mixed up. So real D is the good one?

I'm in Vancouver so I'm sure I could find what ever is the best, and that's definitely what I'm willing to do.

Not as garbage as most.

Really? Maybe I'm just not reading it right, but the beginning praises the hell out of the movie, but towards the middle he goes off on a tangent about Bush, Cheney, Hannity, and Limbaugh. By the end, I don't have a clue as to what he's talking about. Some shit about a piano and a horse's birthday.

I'm surprised that digital projection is only 2k...that's just about 1080p more or less. I thought it'd be 4k.
Yeah me too, Cameron was even talking about how 2K/48fps was better than 4K/24fps so I kind of expected Avatar to be the latter.

The fact that some of it is coherent is above and beyond what other negative reviews have managed... says more about the quality of the other reviews really.

RealD is the best.

Review the movie negatively if you want to, but for the love of god, what is it with the complaints that at some point in the movie the audience is expected to cheer the American soldiers being smashed? Yes, that's because they're the bad guys in this movie. Get the fuck over it, you nationalistic twerps.

I wonder if it's just that one theater. The two RealD movies I've seen were definitely not shown in 2K. The scope thing really fucking annoys me too. :P I like scope...but not for 3D. Why Camerwrong, why!?
