How do I know which type of IMAX a particular theatre is? I didn't know there was a 'Liemax' until now. Should I just call and say are you guys the IMAX that sucks? :lol They'll probalby think Digital is better and say no it's OK we've got the good stuff.

And what is this about vibrating chairs? I do not want that gimmicky crap, please tell me that's not part of the IMAX experience everybody here raves about.

i think liemax3d is above realD, according to the thread.

RealD was perfectly fine. looked amazing.

I wonder if it's just that one theater. The two RealD movies I've seen were definitely not shown in 2K. The scope thing really fucking annoys me too. :P I like scope...but not for 3D. Why Camerwrong, why!?

They probably were shown in 2K, which looks fine for most things at standard cinema distances from the screen.

Also, what's so bad about scope for 3D?

Just say "yo fuckers, you asshats digital projection or wut". If they are, it's 'LieMAX', if not it's legit, but either way it's better than the two alternatives, apparently anyway.

Hrmm.... I'm going to a LieMAX where its 3D showings are advertising on movietickets.com as RealD.

I be confused. Is there a specific "LieMAX 3D", or is it in fact going to be RealD?

Vibrating Chairs?

The fuck?

I don't imagine that ending well.

It's just the way the RealD theater here is set-up, the silver screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio. 3D stuff shown in scope looks weird, you can notice the empty space in the screen. Besides, I'm gonna be missing out on information when I shouldn't. :P

Sucks for you. All the digital 3D cinemas I've seen have scope ratio screens and play everything without letterboxing.

As for the missing out on information...I don't really think it's a problem. It's like complaining about missing out on information in Zodiac or Public Enemies because they're projected in scope.

Eh, most 3D movies are actually 16:9. :P So you got pillarboxing instead. :P

They talk about Avatar in the first chapter, and the guest makes a good point, that you don't need to see a woody allen film or juno in 3D. Basically he doesn't see this becoming the norm. I wonder if that's going to slow down adaption of 3D TVs when they become available. I can imagine a lot of threads here asking how are you are going to watch a certain movie or TV show - 2D or 3D. For games (probably next-next-gen) it's going to be all 3D I think.

The image resolution seems a lil low for 2k actually, unless it is accounting for the lost resolution of going to scope from a digital 1.78 file. And the file size seems a lil off compared to other posts on here.

Notice also the lack of a rating, and also the creation date on the label. (Wait, I just realized that is from France, so the creation date makes sense. Nevermind. Us Americans and our silly ways we put dates).

Review the movie negatively if you want to, but for the love of god, what is it with the complaints that at some point in the movie the audience is expected to cheer the American soldiers being smashed? Yes, that's because they're the bad guys in this movie. Get the fuck over it, you nationalistic twerps.
Are they really American troops though? I've heard varying accounts on whether that is true, and other reviewers and reports indicated that they were more like the company's (RDA's) own private Blackwater type private military service SecFor.

And yeah, making American soldiers the bad guys would definitely upset a lot of people.

This sentence of the Village Voice review set my teeth on edge.

Village Voice said:
Worse, the viewer is encouraged to cheer when uniformed American soldiers are blown out of the sky and instead root for a bunch of naked, tree-hugging aborigines led by a renegade white man on a humongous orange polka-dot bat.

Zeliard said:
That just makes it much worse. Such a pathetically ethnocentric review.

That's the thing about the negative reviews. Most of them try to bring up these completely oblique ways to deconstruct the film while missing the entire point of a movie like this.

i definitely saw them as
some kind of Blackwater operation, under the direction of corporate interests, rather than American soldiers. that review is bullshit.

overusing spoiler tags, i don't want to get rabidly attacked by Sculli :lol

Dont worry. In a few hours the rabies vaccine will have worked on Sculli and it will be safe to post little details here and there again.

Hope you love it Sculli, I cannot wait for my showing Friday night after work.

can't believe he says uniformed americans like they're decked out with US flag patches or some shit. They're privately contracted security

And the fear of a Terminator blowing down my door to kill me will have subsided as well.

Yeah me too, Cameron was even talking about how 2K/48fps was better than 4K/24fps so I kind of expected Avatar to be the latter.
I believe you meant to say the former, and I remember reading somewhere that Fox apparently vetoed the 48fps thing.

So what kind of glasses do the IMAX theaters use for 3D then? I've got tickets to see a RealD show but I'm thinking about driving the extra 20 minutes to see it in IMAX if its that fantastic.

I'm suprised at all the predictions of the Hurt Locker winning best picture this year. Is it a great film? Absolutley. However, up until this point, it's only grossed a miniscule 12 million dollars. Now, I realize that, in recent years, the box office for best picture winners has been on a downward trend. That said, almost every single movie on the list of best picture winners of the past 25 years has made substantially more money before the nomination/award (especially looking at Crash, where it released in the summer-ish time period, and made around a million dollars post-award....
though that might have to do with the quality of the movie more than anything
)

(I'm getting my general statistics from this website)

The bottom line is, when the academy is facing shrinking viewership, and when Titanic had the largest audience for an Oscar showing, ever, I don't think another small film is going to take the award.

I'd say Avatar (if it has box office appeal) could just as easily take the win. But, we'd have to wait a couple weeks to determine that.

Also: I picked up the Avatar soundtrack, and I love it. I need to listen to it a bit more, but it seems James Horner has done a fantastic job, yet again. :D

In an alternate universe, Cameron made the soldiers Chinese and is currently being pilloried for his racism.
To be fair it sounds like the movie trades fairly heavily in the lame "noble savage" stereotype. Of course it's for a nonexistent race, so it's not quite as silly as when it's applied to real people.

No I didn't, although you're right, that was piss poor writing. What I meant to say was Cameron was moaning that the industry is pushing 4k24fps (the standard for modern 35mm movies) when he believes 2k48fps is a better direction to take cinema.

Same. Unless I drive 2 hours but everyone laughs and says it's a furry/smurf movie. I agree, explain the importance, no bite to go with.
