Then be prepared to be completely blown away by the CGI, specifically the fascial expressions. Some of it is just beyond words. It’s so ahead of everything else! Deserves tons of praise!

One thing I will say though is overall the 3D disappointed me a little...I thought it was too subtle. I wanted things coming out of the screen more often! I saw it in IMAX Real-D by the way.

Don't get me wrong the 3D added to the experience but not once did I dodge my head or think something was gonna hit me. I suppose I had unrealistic expectations. The CGI is the star!
 
Saw this last night, CGI was incredible and the 3D was really well done in my opinion. Story was a tad corny at times but overall and excellent movie :D

I'm pretty sure it was. It gave us time and opportunity to analyse Jake's human form over the changing period, which imo is integral to the viewers ability to understand Jakes mind frame and latter draw to the Navi tribe.
 
I will be seeing the movie in digital 3D, but it will not be on an IMAX screen. Should I expect goodness?

Yeah, I've read that the facial expressions on the Na'vi are exceptionally impressive.

Has anyone on here specifically been a hater and has now changed their mind? I was a believer from day one. I think it would be more impressive to someone who wasn't.

i liked that the 3d was subtle enough that it pulled you in and made everything seem closer, but didn't remind you of the screen by poking things all the way out at your face. it was very restrained.

Huh, I was thinking of going to the Arclight for a possible second viewing if I'm so compelled...Do you know anything about this "XpanD"? Never heard of it.

Oh I forgot to mention there was a entire row of children behind who were ecstatic during the film, clapping and cheering in certain scenes.





People never clap here. I think this could pretty much end up being the young generation of today's Star Wars.

edit: I've never been an Avatar hater, I've been one of the most positive people about this movie not named Scullibundo. :P I only doubted the 3D aspect of the movie.

The one thing that has always excited me about AVATAR is how excited Cameron is for his own movie. I don't think any hype that comes out of his mouth is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. The dude's living his dream and how many of us can say we get to fully realize this imaginary universe we've had in our heads for years.

As someone who aspires to be a creator, I can't be anything but happy for him, and that means I'm pumped for AVATAR regardless of any problems it might have.

people clapping in movies is one of my weird irrational fears :P haha. i cringe when it happens. but seeing kids that excited by something would be so awesome. i'm 28 and i was completely ecstatic, so i can't imagine what it'd be like to see it as a kid.

The scene that sticks out the most for me when it comes to the 3D was when all the
embers/ash from a fire
were on the screen. That was truly spectacular, the detail was really impressive. Soooo good!

For me I thought the best 'display' of the depth was the bit when he falls in the water and is stopped by the fallen tree. Because it's water, you can see a moving plane from the foreground all the way to the back and you can see the depth between specific breaks of the water, it's pretty insane.

the shot where
Jake wakes up in the ashes, for me, was the most photoreal and interesting in terms of 3d of all the scenes, absolutely stunning.

No, not really, but he was blunt about his previous adaptations being trash. I doubt he'll mince words when he realizes what happened with the Avatar game. He talked at length about his plans for video games down the line, though. I'll link the interview when it's up.

One of the most awesome shot for me was the
the near first-person view of Quaritch controlling the the mech at the end. It was spectacular in 3D, when I looked at the rear view mirror I was blown away.

It's pretty crap yeah. Although I got a demo of it in 3D, if you have a 3D TV, there's nothing else you're using it for, so I guess it's worth playing.

I was kind of excited about it because I kept hearing all this crap about being 3 years in development and having the time and cash to make a great movie tie in, and yeah compared to most movie tie ins it's good, but compared to a 'real' game, it's pathetic.

Sounds good. Despite Avatar, I think a second game could be good, because now they've got the basic idea of what to do, they don't have to change from a FPS a year in, and they'll be in from day one. Although none of his movies have made great games, AvP2 was awesome, that's close.

Well, again, the only reason I was interested in it was because it is a canon prequel to the film and it supposedly contains a lot of Lore about the universe straight from the "Pandorapedia". But yeah, the game is apparently pretty flawed from the reviews I read so I dunno if it's worth it even for that. Maybe after several price drops.
 
I didn't think the demo was trash. It's a kind of competent Lost Planet-ish clone of sorts. It looks pretty good if you have the right hardware, at least. :P
 
Everybody mentioning their favourite 3D parts. For me it was the most subtle parts that made me realise how impressive the 3D was:

Firstly, again the scene where Jake awakes out of Cryo and you really get the sense of scale - seeing all the others floating around in the background. You really feel like you're in the room and Jake is being ejected in front of you.

Second is where Quaritch is giving his 'We're going to fuck those Na'vi up' speech to all the marines and we're just slowly tracking along the back heads of his audience. Really felt like you were in the crowd. Absolutely immersive.

Before those scenes, I had my doubts about the non-digitally constructed parts. I had my doubts that the Cameron/Pace camera could shoot live action as naturally as they could arrange things in the volume. But it was magnificent.

I think I agree completely with what somebody said earlier. Cameron has proven that 3D is not a gimmick - I am now completely comfortable with it STANDING BESIDE 2D films indefinitely. I don't think ALL films will benefit -especially not this early on with almost all directors not knowing how to approach it, but I think once it is embraced properly as Cameron has used it, and not as a gimmick tool as almost all other directors have, it will a widely accepted alternative.

You really do feel ten times as involved in events because of it.

Maybe trash is a little extreme, so poor that I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase no matter their interest in Avatar or video games. The only thing it serves as, as far as I can tell is a display of 3D home entertainment, as they are so few a far between. It being one of the two games, the other being Invincible Tiger.

I mentioned movie games, it's definitely a very high quality movie license game, but that's not saying much. King Kong was about the last one I could remember being 'normal' game quality.

Wow I must say, your taste couldn't be more similar to mine when it comes to beautifully crafted 3D scenes. I think those parts gave an amazing sense of depth due to the lack of any forced or immediate depth of field. As a result every discernible object stood out and as you focus on each of them, your eyes naturally blurs everything else out. THIS was the first thing that stood out for me in that cryo scene, I couldn't help but turn to my buddy and ask "are you fucking SEEING this?!?!" Holy shit the 3D effect was that engaging.

people asking for thing to come out of the screen more often are totally missing the point of this. The subtlety of the 3D is nuanced and controlled. Absolutely incredible. I'm missing pandora and it gorgeous real world/other worldliness sitting here.

On the other, the colors look a lot better than what you get with those crap glasses. :|

Hopefully 3D projection becomes "perfect" soon.

I found the print at my IMAX was crazy colourful and bright even with the glasses on. Perhaps it the projector calibration?
 
So I'm guessing the Avatar: An IMAX 3D Experience is the preferred viewing setup, yes? I'm about to book tickets for the wife and I. She finally gave in!

I don't know what your cinema was like but the colours at mine with the Dolby 3D was flawless. Also wasn't too bright. Looked exactly like a normal movie but in 3D.

Considering this is the 1st movie that is done this way, this is the herald. 3D movies will follow. I swear to god, I wonder if spielberg is watching this, looking down in shame at what he did to INDY4/the movie business in general considering the clout and ability to harness budget like he does. Also see: Gout Lucas.

I wouldn't say Lucas is a good example. New Star Wars Trilogy on Box Office Mojo show about 110-120mil for each one. Regardless of quality. The technical work in them was still quite good. I'd say he definitely did a damn good job for what the budget was.
