I actually liked the first half a lot. The second half just pumped it to a whole next level.

It's not like Titanic was a bad movie anyway. Sure you knew how it was gonna end, but you can totally see how Avatar was gonna end too, that didn't stop it from being a fantastic film.
 
I think ScientificNinja needs some growing up to do. Titanic is not only a good movie, DiCaprio is also one of the best currently working actors.

I think it's a great film. He wanted to make the biggest chick flick ever, and he did. I really don't get the hate for Titanic, it's great. If you don't like visually incredible films with love stories, this really shouldn't be a thread for you.
 
I suppose the disappointing thing is that this movie doesn't really offer people topics of discussion or debate, its not something you can talk about with friends over a meal after seeing the film. The Dark Knight offered several weeks worth. It's only eye-candy.

Maybe that depends on the friends. I think there was and is a lot to talk about. The movie's topic itself guarantees that, imo. :)

I loved it. Although not his best film, I did think it was his best directed.

There's probably a lot of pent up anger since the BO champ tug of war between Lucas & Spielberg ended since it not only beat all time BO for Jurassic Park, but also the re-release of Star Wars.

Cameron saying he was King of the World at the Oscars probably didn't help although i felt that was an appropriate response given his ego and the fact that he was indeed king of the movie world & pop culture for that matter. Titanic still was or was close to the #1 movie at the time of the Oscar broadcast. Even if a movie ever made as much money, it will be a long time before it has the longevity that movie had.

I think there's a good deal of things to discuss. The entire world of Pandora, for example. ;)

You also have tangent concepts, such as the concept of moving your mind into an alien body with alien capabilities. Would this not be the ideal way to interface mankind into galactic community? If representatives from our world traded up to a "galactic standard" body-type, where everyone had the same mental and physical capabilities, then we would have much less of an inferiority complex in communicating with civilizations that may have had a billion years more development time.

Yes, my friends and I are weird, but still... there is much to talk about after watching Avatar.
I really like the organic USB port concept.

It's just about the most incredible CG shot I've ever seen.

The only thing discussed about TDK was Heath's Joker really, what the hell was so engaging about TDK that created some kind of intellectual discussions? Debate? lol

I'm pretty sure that the only shots we worked on was the big battle at the end (starting from when the humans move out for their final assault).

I don't think so. :) Star Wars was just something else regarding fan- and cult-potential. That said classics like Alien, Blade Runner etc were no Star Wars either in that regard. :D Once I see blue people walking down the street I take that back).
My friends and I agree that this is a sign of a new era of film making and possibilities, though. That's quite something in times like this. It's hard to really impress a huge number of people nowadays and Avatar obviously did it.

I think the 'new' Star Wars is way too open. If anything, it's the new Jurassic Park in terms of what might be a huge family action movie that really shows the potential of a new wave of technology to a large audience.

Personally I don't like Star Wars or Jurassic Park, but I saw JP at the cinema as a kid, and it blew me away, Avatar was the first movie since to have that same effect, and I didn't think that'd happen as an adult.

As for keeping assets, I can't imagine anyone would be throwing it away given the chance of a sequel.

I doubt it's really going to usher in any type of new era of film making. Problem is the cost of making the movie, this is just not something your going to see often get made on this level. Cameron himself has said he likes working with lesser known actors in large part to having more focus on his movie and more budget for the actual film instead of people.

And you can see why it cost so much during the credits. Good god, Weta had a TON of people working on this. They had more lighting TDs alone on this than most movies have for an entire visual effects crew.

It's both, you really can't put one over the other. Lasseter put it best in that Pixar documentary a while back, from when Pixar just started - art challenges technology, technology inspires the art. It goes back and forth endlessly.

Oh yeah, that'd be interesting, I'm guessing there's at least a 4k version somewhere despite what they seem to be sending to theatres.
 
I loved everything about the movie from the story to the characters to the visuals. Easily the best movie of the year. I think I'm going to go see it again in a few weeks and will get the DVD whenever it's released.

Gafer, please. Even in Dancing with Wolve the white hero dressed up like a native American. It doesn't change that the majority of the audience will identify with either of the two Marines for most of the movie. That Scully calls the human people the aliens at the end is more likely to get him considered a 'race traitor' than a source of great wisdom
 
Saw it last night. Enjoyed it very much. Avatar was gorgeous and a fun film that I liked a lot. Not mind-blowing, not amazing, just a very well-done movie by Cameron. Just makes me wish he'd come back to the Aliens franchise and do an epic scale war flick. I kept thinking about that during the movie. The world of Avatar is probably the most memorable part of the film.
 
I was thinking more about that "halo" or whatever it's called, and it's 'interesting' how the Na'vi basically rape the Banshees in order to subjugate them. There's even some goofy discussion about how the Banshees actually want it. :lol
 
Thanks to the snowstorm coming and lack of close by theaters I won't be getting to see the movie this weekend. I'm glad to see pretty much everyone is enjoying it though.

I do know that what was sent to digital theaters was a 2K digital copy. Barely above blu-ray quality. Meh. Can you at least tell me if that is as good as it gets?

I would assume it would have been rendered at a higher resolution and downscaled. That's what were always told anyway ;p

Now it's a mystery. ILM sent out some 'hi-res' images of Avatar at a little over 2K. It's interesting HDMI 1.4 (and in turn next years BluRay players) will support QuadHD (about 4K) for 2D only, 3D will still be 1080p. And Cameron said the 2D BluRay will be out before the 3D version, which presumably means before we get QuadHD BluRay's too.

Film is predominantly shot at a 2k resolution though. There are some exceptions obviously. It's kind of nice to know that Blu Ray is as good as we're gonna get resolution wise with most movies.

Am I the only one who wants to see a purely science fiction film with 3D visuals of this caliber? While Avatar was certainly Science Fiction, the majority of the film takes place on the Navi home planet which I found to be more akin to a Fantasy setting.
