I got Enemy at the Gates flashbacks.

You and me the same. As I've mentioned in my impressions, its the trumpet cues that felt out of place and reminded me of EatG.

I LOVED the look of him with his war paint.
The war paint that was applied on his face looked unbelievably realistic, they did an amazing job with creating photorealistic organic materials in the movie

I still don't like it. It didn't elevate the breath taking scenery. Since JC got some much inspiration from Miyazaki's films, just imagine how much better the exploration scenes would have been with Joe Hisaishi's score.

I just orgasmed thinking of Departure to the West and Origin of Life and Death among other pieces in Avatar. Though no discredit to Horner. I thought the score was fine. But it didn't pack that extra "oomph" to my ears that I like sci-fi fantasy films like these to usually do.

So I have now seen the movie 3 times and am still awed by it. I can't get the movie off my mind and am talking about it all the time to customers at work :lol

The game (despite it being just ok) has picked up big time in the last 3 days. In fact we've sold out of the 360 version 2 times and the ps3 once. So I think the IP is going to make cash on its extras like games, toys, etc.

I'm taking my Mom and Grandma to see it on Christmas so that will be 4 and then a few friends want to go see it Tuesday next week...This will officially be the most I've seen a movie in theaters since Jurassic Park (4 times). The sad thing is I think I will go more than what I've said. I can't really put it into context on how much I'm hooked on this world and the characters (Jake, Neytiri and pretty much all of the Na'Vi.)

Seriously. Out of all the characters, he was actually the most terribly written and one of the worst written of any Cameron film (and that's saying something). The problem the movie has isn't "simplicity" (Simple movies can be great. Most recently, I liked Princess and the Frog.), it's that there is no nuance: it's all really swinging a big club around and hitting the audience over its head, as if people are retards.

And the illustration of this point is his character. In each successive re-watch, he becomes more and more a representation of the movies glaring flaws. He is comical to watch, completely unbelievable as a human or anything. He is less human than the Na'vi. His only purpose is to be the embodiment of the ALL GUNS-NO-TALK foil to the Na'vi way of life, and as a result Cameron breathed absolutely no life into him. He might as well be a wind up doll, screeching out prepared catchphrases to the glee of little fucking children.

I have issues with the rest of the movie, but this character is the one part I would genuinely hope the movie gets a Razzie for. He is so fucking abysmally written that it's borderline offensive.
Pretty much this although I thought the acting didn't really help matters. Other than Zoe Saldana, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses, and Sigourney Weaver, I thought the acting was ranged from barely tolerable to flat out terrible. Christ I couldn't wait until Michelle Rodriquez's worthless character was killed.

The knife was a bit stupid, I thought.

I laughed my ass off when he pulled that thing out. It just seemed so ridiculous. But after I thought about it kinda made sense. A professional soldier would always want a fallback when he runs out of ammo and blades are always better than fists even metal ones. It's actually kinda logical that they would build a bladed fallback into the suit although it probably wouldn't be a novelty sized bowie knife. :lol That was a nice touch though.

I was kind of rooting for Quaritch to bail out of the mech, put his mask on and use that giant fucker like a sword.

Holy shit that would have been epic. Now I'll be thinking about that the next time I see this in the theater.

The Pandorapedia makes a mention about the knife:
The other (non-standard) weapon is a combat knife of self-sharpening diamond-hard ceramic. To match the scale of the suit, the blade is over one meter long and can cut through many metals. (Although lethal, the blade is not as utilitarian as some cutting devices and is considered to be something of an affectation, used mostly by SecOps troopers with a “Special Forces” mentality.)
So yeah, it's only used by the special forces people. Maybe a sword or a spinning blade next time on AMP Suit 2.0. :)

And I was also thinking/hoping that Quaritch
was going to get up after being shot. Yeah I know, those arrows are damn big, but it'd only prove that he was badass enough to come back from the dead
:D

I just saw Avatar and...WOW!

I'm going to go see it again on Saturday, although this time I'll see it in 2D - I thought the 3D was a nice experience, but I felt that it was hard to concentrate on everything happening in a scene because, at times, the 3D was very distracting.

With that said, I can't wait to the sequel mainly due to the fact that Cameron has now established this world to the audience, now he can make a more complex narrative to go with the complex world he created.

The only thing I didn't quite understand is Trudy and (I forgot the other guy's name) were very helpful in releasing Jake, Grace, and Norm even though there was no real character development with them in regards to their feelings of Pandora (I mean, Trudy did pull away when everyone was firing upon the Na'vi but that was all that was done an the other guy didn't really get any character development at all). That was my only real complaint as far as the story goes, although if someone can explain this away with something I missed then feel free to do so.

I am also glad that Quaritch actually died and, if a sequel happens, they won't rehash a villain. I do wonder how they would make a sequel because I really don't know where Cameron could go from here (it can't be just about the Na'vi because I just don't think they are strong enough to hold their own films). The last thing I would comment on is that I truly felt for some of the characters (in particular, Neytiri). I now believe that Cameron was right in holding off Avatar so that the tech could catch up and be believable. If the tech wasn't believable it would be much harder to feel a connection to some of the Na'vi.

Man. That would have been something to see, especially if he could hold his own against Jake or Neytiri.

i love sigourney, and her character become pretty cool by the end but i wasn't really convinced by her until later in the movie. it doesn't feel like one of her stronger performances, to me.

on that note, watched 'the ice storm' yesterday. she's awesome in that.

I find myself going back to rewatch the scene where the tree's seeds cling to Jake that first night he's stranded in the forest. I really like the visuals and music for that part.

Yeah, hopefully all the diehard squeakquel fans already saw it and they won't be going back for the theater experience.

Well, I cannot imagine that there'd be people who'd go to see that movie more than once. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out who's seeing the film to begin with?

I run a film website and didn't even remember that it came out today.....:lol

I don't think I'm quite the target audience though.

We have 3 3D theaters at my work. The last few shows for each were pretty packed earlier tonight. The 2D theaters were also pretty full, but no where near sold out. I havn't really seen consistantly packed shows like this on weekdays since around Dark Knight.

Yea, when we were looking up times that Avatar was going to air, it shocked us pretty badly to find out that the "Squeakel" had more showings than Avatar.

Ugh.

Heh. This is one of those rare instances of GAF anecdotal evidence being exactly correct. :D

And despite chipmunks and Sherlock, Avatar is apparently tracking to come out ahead for the weekend. We'll see. Chipmunks only debuting $3m higher on its opening day is a pretty good sign for Avatar, as is holding steady.

If international grosses hold steady, that would put Avatar around $360-370m WW after six days.

Got some incredible legs... haven't seen any like that since the Dark Knight. Will definitely take number one this weekend. Will probably start to slowly fade from there though.

Maybe. Next several weeks look pretty barren. Biggest movie coming out is Book of Eli, and that is rated R

Avatar is gonna have crazy legs. I don't know if it'll do Titanic numbers, but it might do something akin to what Ice Age 3D pulled.
I think it will be movie #5 to make over a billion, WW.

Earnings through Tuesday, world-wide:

Domestic: $109,497,762
+ Foreign: $219,769,153
= Worldwide: $329,266,915

It was $285m on Monday, meaning about $45m brought in on Tuesday alone.

If the Wednesday WW earnings hold as steady as the US was said to be, it's at $375m in six days.

Simply nuts.

Just saw it on IMAX 3D - pretty damn awesome flick. I'll probably have to see it again in 2D, though. The 3D was pretty distracting at times.

Effects and action were pretty badass. CGI was fantastic to above average. A few parts had a bit of an unnatural feeling, while other parts had a holy shit that looks incredible feeling.

Story/plot-wise, yeah yeah yeah, Dances with Wolves/Last Samurai/The Matrix/Surrogates blah blah blah, that's a given already. I think it had enough to stand on its own, more or less, although it was a bit samey.

The general and that project manager guy were pretty lame one dimensional antagonists - no real motive or justification besides greed and ignorance. A bit too caricature-y and not compelling enough.

Whoever came up with the biology of Pandora is brilliant.

One thing about this movie that bothers me - the same point that bothered me about Wall*E (another movie I loved):

I find it hard to believe that a human civilization advanced enough to achieve faster than light space travel would act in such an uncivilized manner. Individuals, sure I can understand that. Humanity as a whole? :/ That's why I want deeper character motivations in the villains.

Also, they alluded to the Earth being used up and dead. Faster than light travel would imply some kind of fusion or anti-matter energy source that would be clean. With energy so cheap and non-polluting, how would the Earth get used up? All that technology and they can't even clean up a planet? All the raw materials out there to be mined from asteroids and other dead planets, and Earth is used up? Unlikely.

But for the sake of the plot, I'll go along with it. It's not as egregious as all-spark powder or robot heaven.

RE:rentahamster

Well, there is nothing in Avatar that insinuated that humans as a whole ARE being this stupid. In case you didn't notice, this isn't a national army or some kind of Earth confederation that is harvesting the unobtanium on Pandora, it is a corporation driven by greed.

I love how people can point to stuff like that and be all like ZOMG PLOTHOLE when there really is a simple explanation for it.

I still haven't seen it for a second, third, fourth, or however many times you guys are seeing it again yet. My cat had surgery so I'm house sitting. She should be good in a few days and it'll be Avatar time. As each day passes I forget more and more and really can't analyze.

GO AVATAR GOOOOOOOOOOOO! It's amazing how pretty much everyone in this thread instantly wants to see it multiple times after watching it for the first time.

I'm so glad it's doing well! I think it’s entered 'phenomenon' status, or at least it soon will. You should celebrate by changing your avatar to an AVATAR avatar! :D

If you are interested in the movies background, get this:

Has tons of info on the movies worldview. Shows Avatars earth, details Pandoran culture, RDA stuff, etc

Its pretty much a mini-pandorapedia (i hopes that we eventually get the whole thing)

The last movie that multiple friends of mine stated that they went to see multiple times was The Titanic.

Coincidence? I think not. Cameron knows how it works.
