Guys there's another question I had, I'm sure JC had as much control as any director can have, but listening to the ST:lol ( I've been listening to it for 4 days straight, I'm a nerd I can't help it):lol :lol Did Cameron have any say or did he just tell Horner to go with it!? Or is it not known!?
I just realized as I typed the above ?, I'm totally obsessed with this movie! I've thought about it sense I seen it! :( :)

From what I recall, that isn't the only thing that makes the movie what it is though.

When filming a 'real' movie, the director actually see's what's being filmed. He can look at the scene unfolding either through his eyes or through the camera, and he can also quickly rewatch the unedited scene off the film. This allows him to decide whether he likes the shot, or needs a reshoot. With traditional motion capture, that simply isn't possible. You have a bunch of actors in front of a green-screen in cheesy suits with 'balls' on them. Basically, you're guessing whether the shot turned out okay or not. Until it gets rendered, you really don't know ... and at that point it's too late.


For this movie, my understanding is Cameron had something epic created ... and it more than anything will change how movies are made from here on out. Basically, they have preliminary versions of the backgrounds already created (though this doesn't have to be done). But what's awesome, is they've already constructed basic models for the characters ... and the system is able to render the motion capture in realtime. Obvious the true movie quality rendering is done later, ala traditional CG, but what this allows him to do is effectively view the scene as it will look later in a basic form. He can see how a scene will play out as it is being filmed in a way similar to real life filming. This allows a director to actually direct a CG film ... and the results speak for themselves.

Correct...if you watch the special on HBO (its on, on demand). He has a little screen/camera thing he can use. Anything he points it at he sees their CG version. So when filming Zoe for example he can see Neytiri (in very basic form) to see how it looks.

IIRC, there are actually a couple of different Avatar specials on demand. I didn't want to spoil the movie when I noticed them a while back, and subsequently forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder!

Lang was awesome though, JC picked a great actor!
Side note, my good friend at work is going tomorrow, he has terrible taste( He hated Star Trek), :lol he's taking he wife and kid! I hope he likes it!

Watched Avatar for the third time today in a different RealD theater.

Gonna have to turn back on my word a bit on what I said on current 3D tech...because this time it was perfect. Perfect color reproduction and brightness levels(just the same as the 2D online trailers), no ghosting and the projection was also super crisp, excellent image quality. It was almost like watching the movie for the first time...I could see every single detail in the CG with zero problems. GODDAMN I love digital projection. I guess 2K resolution is good enough. :P

It took three tries but I finally found a 3D theater I'm completely fine with. :P If you had dimness issues I suggest you try a different place.

What more can I say about the movie itself? It seems I love it more each time I watch it. :lol I just want MOAR.

I'm the exact same way. I was going to take a break from seeing it again for awhile after my 3rd time, but my staff all chose to see Avatar as the movie that I was taking them all to even though they had ALL seen it already except 1 of them. Yet again the movie just seems to get better with each viewing.
 
Yeah today was my 4th time, and im still not tired of it. It just gets better and better with every rewatch...

I really hope for it, even though the story isn't the best ever! From a technical standpoint, JC is now my favorite director. I've never been this happy for a director to succeed! He simply knows his shit, plan and simple. I still can't wait to see what Steven can do with this tech though, didn't someone say TinTin is in 3D. Is he using the same technics/camera used in avatar!? Also sorry for all the OT question!

Now that we're all back home and everyone has work and shit it's getting really hard to schedule an outing.
My sister hasn't even seen it once yet!

Funny thing I noticed today, with every rewatch, the
destruction
of Hometree gets more and more powerful and saddening each time.

The tree falling down and the Na'vis running all-around in disarray is one of my favorite part of the movie. One of the best looking scene as well.
 
Michael Bay said he thought 3D was a passing gimmick. I wonder if this film changed his mind. I didn't really care for 3D before Avatar but after being shown it's potential it makes 2D look so boring.

That scene was complete and utter fucking madness.
There was like shit flying around, huge explosions, and the bass in IMAX was like rumbling the contents of my stomach.
I was honestly sort of glad when everything calmed down.

Bay will get on the 3D bandwagon like he got on IMAX.


And he'll utterly fail at it. I can't even begin to imagine how headache-inducing would a 3D Bay movie be.

The middle of the tree fall, when the sky started to turn dark, it was fucking impressive!

That was kind of the same reaction I had to my second viewing. The 3d was so much better the second time. I was even almost against one of the walls and it was a beauty.
 
I am trying to figure out why, past the superb effects the movie was so good.

I think it was because, while the story was completely unoriginal and very predictable, the sheer length of the movie, allowed them to tell the story in a deeper manner.

My first viewing was in an awesome RealD theater (rocking, cockpit-style chairs FTW). It's a fantastic place to see a movie, but it is missing some bass amplitude for my tastes. That scene in particular lost a lot of the impact (pun) due to this shortcoming. The scale of the tree and the ensuing chaos was diminished.

For this reason, I'm heading to the 10,000 watts of madness that IMAX is for my second viewing :D
 
It's amazing how Cameron has gone from a has-been hack, to people fighting over his heritage in the matter of a few months :lol
