Seriously, where is the BO thread?

I wanted to gloat dammit!

this.

and wow @ the success. i mean. besides some trailer there wasn't that marketing two or three weeks before the movie started, was there? at least not in germany. and now look at these numbers.

Avatar could leave theatres after 17 days and already be a massive success. Just think about that. Instead, its going to run a train on the month of January and take a run at Titanic.

There was massive marketing for it in the US. Commercials, Trailers, Toys, Happy Meals, lots of promoting on Fox's other shows (on an episode of Bones they went to an Avatar premiere, and on NFL on Fox they CG'd Terry Bradshaw into scenes from Avatar).

It's definitely going to beat Titanic, that's with 30% drops each weekend....insane!

if it beats Titanic I will be shocked..but with these numbers maybe you're right! Awesome job Cameron...great flim deserves great box office.

oh! seems like it worked :lol

Beating Titanic is still something that is far from definite for me, but really who fucking knows with this movie. I do think like someone else pointed out that it's fucking hilarious that during the 12 years since Titanic came out not one movie even remotely challenged its record and then JC comes back and does just that.

And yeah the marketing effort for Avatar ramped up massively as the opening date approached.

I still think next weekend is the tell. Like Daniel said, if you take 30% weekly drops from here on out, it beats Titanic comfortably.

making $1b on a ±$500m budget isn't really that much of a success. according to mojo, studios get about 50% of the domestic gross and that number's probably lower for international numbers. it probably didn't even breakeven yet.

Budget wasn't $500m, but that aside there's some rather epic video market action to come. Point being, the movie could come to a full stop now and it would still make mad bank for Fox.

I saw it yesterday. 5 star visuals, 2.5 star story. I can see some of the Princess Mononoke comparisons but Miyazaki's writing is light years beyond Cameron's.
Then there's hope for Battle Angel.

[I know, not Miyazaki, but his anime is probably similar enough.]

it thought it was ±$250m (production budget) + ±$150m (marketing budget).

I don't see why people think that is so crazy..to beat Titanic.

It needs to make 824.1 million worldwide to do so and it will be in theaters AT LEAST for 10 more weeks. It needs to make at least $82M world wide a week to do so. I know someone could calculate it better with drops and such but that's an average figure and one that is certainly attainable.

You know the numbers are going down already.

Specially with the holidays being over.

The movie needs to make almost two times what it made so far. I just don't know if that'll happen

That's an average applied at the final run of a movie. Studios get a considerably higher percentage of the gross during the first few weeks a movie is out(we're talking 90%-70% here). Most of what Avatar has made is going straight into Fox's piggy bank.

Avatar is undoubtedly already making profit for Fox.

It really is amazing, echoing earlier comments, about how a good number of people were really skeptical about this film, not only because of how large the budget was (I honestly don't see how budget should be taken as any indicator of how well a film will perform), but because of things like the Na'vi design and the whole sci-fi setting in general. I especially remember how most were saying the Na'vi would most certainly put off the general public, but, it seems they've been embraced quite strongly. Man, never doubt Cameron.

I remember someone mentioning that, unlike Titanic, which apparently FOX had to share the proceeds with another distributor/studio, they wisened up this time around and made sure to do the whole thing themselves. So yeah, it's all but certain that FOX made back their investment on the film by now and are into big profits.

1 billion in 17 days is insane.

However, I don't think it'll have the legs to reach 2 billion. If it catches up to Titanic...wow :D

I'mlooking for in depth info on the making of the movie. I've already read the Popular Mechanics article, everything Wired has on the movie and watched the "Enter The World Of James Cameron" and the "Avatar film special" tv specials. Is there anything else worth the read/watch around?

Cinefex issue #120. It's probably everything you could want.

youtube: "avatar making of"

There's plenty of Cameron interviews.

$230m production, $150m marketing.

Which is still totally fucking crazy, of course. It's just not quite $500m.

So why dont we go back on other movies and factor in the marketing budgets when talking profitability? Why is it fair game to do it with Cameron but not others. I would think the marketing budget for Spider-Man and Pirates was probably higher. There was more stuff everywhere for those than with Avatar. And their production budgets were higher as well.

Went to see the movie tonight.

Definitely nothing worth seeing in the movie other than the fancy 3D visuals, if you've seen Pocahontas before, that is.

Also, the coke bottle I bought exploded in my lap.

All in all, I'd say I'd want my money back!

Let's assume a conservative number, shall we?

Let's say it does 50% of 1B over the next 17 days.

And then 50% of that over it's 3rd see of 17 days.

That's 1.7B and some change after 51 days.

That is with a more than conservative 50% drop average.

Wow.. that is...

I cannot even begin to explain how many things are wrong in that sentence

I think it will be a little different for Avatar 2. People might not be sure if the tech will work, the world, characters, etc. during filming.

But now it's a guaranteed success so I think his freedom will expand even more. I can't even fucking imagine what's in store for Avatar 2.

48fps please! Judder is so much worse in 3D.

Neytiri and Jake full-frontal blanking. The first 300 million rated R movie!

No, the marketing on this really was terrible. Its success is due to repeat viewings and word of mouth, much like Titanic.

It is crazy that this could beat Titanic. Cameron has a knack for taking topics that I am not remotely interested in and making me pay multiple times to watch them.

As good as the word of mouth, the marketing campaign was also a HUGE success.
