Also, only in yesterdays viewing of the film did that epic shot of Jake looking over all the clans he's brought together really hit me. That was one epic fucking moment.

Ya was an amazing scene. I still love the very very very end where you can clearly see EVERY clan is surrounding the Tree of Souls during the rebirth.

holy fuuuuuck at overseas weekend gross.

This is getting ridiculous :lol

At the rate this movie is dropping it is going to do 1.5B+ overseas alone. Titanic is officially sunk already. No reason to speculate any longer.

I don't know if its just me, but I always thought Jake suddenly got super buffed out at that point compared to all the previous shots of him.

Yeah. Im thinking its going to barely miss Titanic in the US, but the overseas gross will eclipse it.

Fuck, what if the movie ends up making 2 billion :lol :lol

This is an excellent point. The movie's main achievements are in VFX, not acting and certainly not writing. So it's epic today, but the Harryhausen effect will be visible in the future.
i thought it was acted and written pretty well. the story may have been kind of simple, but even a simple story needs to be intelligently done to resonate as well with audiences as i think this movie has.

How many times have you seen it already??

Finally saw it in 3d tonight. Story was utterly predictable, but special effects and 3d effects were very good all the way through - No CGI fatigue encountered. The world was also extremely well imagined.

Overall, very enjoyable.

It very much can make 2bn. With the way overseas is going it's very very possible. I still see 600m here in America and 1.5-.16 overseas ending up at roughly 2.1-2.2b total. It could do more than that though so who knows.

M. Night Shyamalan continues to show that he is one of the smartest people in the movie industry. The guy knew that this movie was going to be a huge success!! So, he decided to direct Avatar: the last Airbender and release it after AVATAR!! The trailers will feature the main characters in blue skins, and people will think that it is a sequel to AVATAR. But they will be shocked when they watch the movie and discover that it has nothing with AVATAR, and that the characters were colored in blue just for the trailers.

Finally got to see this in regular 3D with a few friends (all of us were impressed). Quite a spectical and awesome for that reason. Action scenes generally lacked punch (except the explosions), though, so I'm not sure I'd buy it when it comes out on blu (we'll see if there is a director's cut). Glad there will be another.

Now...was this movie filmed using an IMAX camera (like a few of TDK scenes were)? Is it worth seeing on an IMAX screen?

Was I the only one who wanted to see the Colonel win in the end? :lol

He was just so badass throughout the whole movie. how could you not want to see him seated on a throne of Na'vi bones drinking from Jakes's skull at the end of the movie?

This movie also shows wannabe action directors how the 'massive explosion behind the guy who is too awesome/concentrated to care' is supposed to be done.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ended between 2.2 to 2.5 billions.

Double-edged sword. I avoided Avatar for almost 3 weeks because I thought it had was based on the Last Airbender bullshit.

You know what would be awesome? If Cameron paid Scott back for what he is owed. Since Cameron directed Aliens, obviously Scott should direct Avatars. :D

Are you kidding me? I have never seen a movie with more intense, visceral action than Avatar.

agreed.

this movie was really missmarketed. they made it seem like it was some movie about a guy joining the natives and beating down some evil aggressor or something. that's what i expected going in, anyway.

instead i got a poignant tale about a grizzled, old, veteran marine colonel, who takes a young-gun marine under his wing. the young-gun, who is meant to sort out some diplomatic problems, instead, after too much contact with the evil aliens, becomes a traitor to the human race. the grizzled vet then has to stop his younger, stronger apprentice.

pretty heartbreaking stuff.

Are people really sure it will reach, or beat Titanic's Box Office numbers? I know it's already fairly close, but is it really that certain that the pace will keep up all the way beyond $1.8b? If so, bravo Cameron, bravo. Pretty much guaranteed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest grossing films of all time now what with it being confirmed there will be a second and third Avatar film, along with the fact that sequels for big blockbusters nearly always do better.

He really is king of the world right about now. I wonder how much he got or is getting paid?

I watched the movie during opening weekend and I really can't remember anything. The plot was tired and predictable and I could anticipate the fate of just about every character. I've recommended it to others for the spectacle in the same way I'd recommend the museum or an aquarium.

It's a very pretty average movie IMO.

Seeing this movie a second time made me hate Norm. A lot.

For me, seeing this a second time made me like Tsu'Tey.

A lot.

I also liked Stephen Lang's performance a LOT more than I did in the first viewing. I really like Quaritch as a character.

Saw it a 3rd time last night, and I liked all of the characters more than I did before. Of course Jake and Neytiri are great, but I also really liked Tsu'Tey, Norm, Grace, Selfridge, Quaritch, and even Trudy. There really are a lot of great characters in this movie. I didn't really notice so much the first two times because so much of the movie focuses on Jake.

  • Dances with Wolves
  • The Last Samarui
  • Avatar

Between these three movies, I think I like "The Last Samarui" the most. Best action scenes.

The story isn't "bad." Its just been done. Predictible. Boring. Pretentious and Preachy. Did anyone, at any time, think that Jake was going to do anything but decide to help the Navi against the evil mining Americans? Anyone?

It was just a really cheesy, long and boring disney film dressed up in awesome, awesome visual effects and 3D.

District 9 shits all over this movie.

I think Ridley should be allowed to direct T3. Its about time they made a sequel to T2 set in the future war.

I'd rather have the Alien Prequel, Forever War, or Brave New World+Dicapro.

I agree with both of you. I was routing for the colnol. He at least had intresting fight scenes.

District 9 had several problems for me:

The weapons left in the slums that the hero is able to use to break into the Company. Even if the human gangsters couldn't use them, why take the chance and leave that shit in the slums? Trade the aliens some dog food and get that shit out of there. Without that convenient oversight, the 3 act is impossible.
I mean, they left a fucking functional powersuit out there--why?

The docking craft. That moron Company again,is unable to locate it before the aliens bury it underground? Seriously? They explain they dung for years but couldn't find it? How about satellite imaging?

The abandoned ship: The privatization of the alien research was unrealistic and ridiculous. If a fucking spaceship landed on earth it would be a world event. The top scientists from all over the world would be on the ship, 24/7 studying the tech. When the alien docs with the mothership at the end, it's empty, not even a minimum wage earning security guard--no one is there. Lazy writing.

Do you say that thinking that Cameron made the film with Jake's betrayalton as a major twist in the plot?

Did you also think the same of The Last Samurai?

Don't forget the magic fluid.

D9 was good, but its kind of...ummm, more of a Robocop than a Terminator. Its definitely more of a Verhoeven-ish type of film.

What good would satellite imaging do when there's a GIANT FUCKING SPACE SHIP blocking their view?

The spaceship wasn't on top of that area at all.

Well, not when it fell off of it. But whatever, I'm not into that kind of nitpicking with sci-fi stuff. I also still don't get why Avatar and District 9 are ever being compared to one another at all. The two films are so damn different in tone and setting and story and... everything. The only thing both films have in common is that they have aliens in them.
And awesome mech fights. Forgot about that.

Definitely. They should have had a scene where the RDA has a trial and a vote of no confidence is admitted in chance of Selfridge's leadership. That would have made the movie more exciting.
