Rottenwatch: AVATAR (82%)

We have a regular speaker series thing where people drop by and give talks on whatever they want. Directors, writers, authors, scientists, etc. Similar to what Google does with their Google Talks I guess. For example, back in December we had Lee Daniels, Rob Marshall, and Quentin Tarantino drop by to discuss their recent films.

Cameron's coming by for a 90 minute talk tomorrow. Should be fun.
Where is he swinging by again? I want to say ILM, but I might have you confused with someone else.

Bummer about the avatar, BTW.

Seriously....?

? What's wrong with that? I could have said "Seriously...?" if I heard James Cameron was making a movie about Blue 10 foot tall Aboriginals being oppressed.

Where have you been? Everyone and their moms said "seriously?" when they heard what Cameron was working on. The majority of people predicted la bomba when they saw the teaser trailer.

Anyone who says "Of course AVATAR made a ton of money, how couldn't it? Everyone knew from the beginning" is a liar because you can only say that now after the fact that it's made billions. (not saying you said this, I'm just making a general point)

Count me in the minority that didn't ride the 'bomba' train that Phoenix Dark was driving.

I've said before (on an AHBUHDAR thread prior to it's release) that I thought that it would make a profit. I never predicted the runaway success it has had but the thought of it bombing never crossed my mind.

I knew it would make a profit. I thought it was going to make someone between $750M - $1 Billion. Glad I was wrong.

I was laughing at the name, not the concept. "The Adventures of Tin Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn" sounds simply hilarious to me, having never, ever heard of it before. Like many oddly named things, I may grow to both get used to it and love the actual product. "Avatar" is not a strange name for a movie.

And this is so two days ago.

It begins.

Betting against a Spielberg family movie making money?

Spielbergo owes the universe several bombs for the really, really, REALLY undeserved success of the last indiana jones movie. What a piece of shit.

Sculli, your old Avie was more stylish.

Just saying.

I know and I will be going back to it, but a very nice junior that I've never spoken to before named OneEightZero randomly pmed me all these avatars he made for me. I think its pretty cool and will be happy to wear it for a little while.

Sorry OneEightZero, I didn't mean to offend you.

But the old one wasn't broke. :P

His old avatar was more stylish, but this one is more badass in the long run. Beihn! He's cool and all but the more I think about it the happier I am that Cameron cast Lang. It's time for him to hit the big time (finally).

I'm also happy Lang was cast as Quaritch as opposed to Biehn. It would have felt a little too close to Coffey in The Abyss for me. Also, I prefer Biehn to play the good guy so I can root for him.

Just saw this for the first time and oh my god ;_;... so good.

If you take the same paycut for Cameron, he's sitting pretty at 144M without any thing from toys or shitty movies.

That's what the fuck I'm talking about.

Let me not do shit and collect 50 million dollars for some shit I did almost 20 years ago.

Spielberg is killing it.

Cameron is writing a book that acts as a prequel to AVATAR. Unlike previously thought, its not a novelization or retelling of the movie in more detail - it takes place before the events in the film.

Ever since "Avatar" mania engulfed Hollywood, rumors and small details have leaked out about possible prequels, sequels, comic books and novelizations. But Landau's comments appear to indicate the first definitive plan to provide more from the "Avatar" world to the seemingly endless appetite of its fans.

"[We] won't have time to do [these stories] in the movie, or maybe in sequels," Landau explained of what Cameron will be writing about. "[So the novel will] give a foundation for the world.

"It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that," Landau explained.

Although Cameron has extensive writing credentials, including the screenplays for everything from the first two "Terminator" films to "Titanic," the "Avatar" prequel would mark his debut as a novelist.

"I don't think Jim has ever written a novel before, but his first step of writing a script is often in a novella format," Landau said. "So this is just expanding that, and I think that he'll be very adept at it."

If the "Avatar" prequel novel is a success, Cameron and Landau could potentially follow in the footsteps of George Lucas, opening up their sci-fi universe to other authors for interpretation. "We certainly have stories that are set before the movie opens and after," he explained. "I think that what we want to do is find out what mediums those stories are best told in. There might be opportunities in publishing to tell some of the backstory, tell some of the Earth war stories, what went on in Jake's life before the movie. And we'd have that lead up to the sequel that might take place on Pandora several years after our movie closed."

As for when "Avatar" fans can look forward to experiencing Cameron's novel, Landau had some encouraging news: "I'm hoping by the end of this year."

Edit: The film has also just usurped Mamma Mia to become the UK's highest grossing picture: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118015105.html?categoryid=19&cs=1&ref=vertintl&ref=ssp

FLOP.

I can't believe Avatar made it to yet another holiday weekend and is still doing pretty good. I thought MLK Jr Day would be its last hurrah.

3 day weekend estimates are in and Avatar dropped to 4th....however it made 22 million (10m on Sunday up over 100% from Friday) for a drop of only 4% from last weekend despite 3 big competitve titles.

Went to see Crazy Heart on Friday... the multiplex parking was packed. I'm not surprised the weekend was a record-breaker. I am a little surprised Percy Jackson did so well.

It has made more money than any other film in the history of cinema and been nominated for nine Oscars, but Avatar's success has now provoked a backlash.

Terry Gilliam, the former Monty Python animator who became an acclaimed director, has accused James Cameron's 3D epic of limiting the opportunities for more thoughtful films.

"There are so many small, beautiful film-makers and actors and directors with so much potential that just can't get a look in because the studios are just pumping all their money into these huge projects," he complained at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards.

"There are such incredible lower-budget films that are magical, but we've got our work cut out with things like Avatar coming out. How are these young talents supposed to get a look in without the budget? That's the sad thing, because they are just as good."

The director of Time Bandits and Brazil added: "Those huge blockbusters that the studios spend millions upon millions of dollars on ... I mean, Avatar, they spent like $400,000 just promoting the thing. How can anyone compete with that?"

Barry Norman, the veteran film critic, says for his part: "Avatar will win all the awards this year: not that it deserves to. James Cameron's films are designed to make money and that they do well. The films that make the most money are not the best films."

Sad to see biterness clouding judgement.

Almost as bad one of the guys from the Hurt Locker saying Avatar isn't a real movie, its only a spectacle. So bitter. :lol

I definitely think Avatar will climb back up. I saw The Wolfman and can't see it doing much better than 80-90 mil domestic over a few weeks and that is being generous. Percy doesn't look to be the Potter killer some touted it as being, either.

Blu-ray news

James Cameron told AWN that AVATAR will be released on Blu-ray and DVD toward the end of April or May from Fox Home Ent. This will be followed by "value-added" Blu-ray and DVD box sets for Christmas with a lot of "feature shock." There might even be a bare bones 3-D Blu-ray also released for Christmas.

However, Cameron clarified that there will not be an extended cut of AVATAR in the box set per se, but rather lots of additional scenes as bonus features. "To me, AVATAR is the cut that I wanted to put out," Cameron explains. "Again, no pressure from the studio… What we may do is one of these branching path things where you can sort of program your own version of the movie, so you can watch a longer or shorter version of it, as long as both are available in the same package at the same time.

"And if the seamless branching works out, and you can pre-select the 15-minute or the 10-minute longer version of the film, well, that'll be an interesting experience because every once in a while something will pop up that you never saw before. And I think that could be kind of cool: you're rolling along and all of a sudden, 'Wow, what is that?' Here's what bothers me: I don't like this kind of revision, this kind of rewriting of history where one version starts to replace another version. To me, the definitive version of the movie is what we released. But it doesn't mean you can't have fun with the technology."

Meanwhile, look for TITANIC on Blu-ray in the near future along with a theatrical 3-D reissue in 2012.
