I was planning on holding out for the special edition, but I caved in and got this version to hold me over. I need a good Blu-Ray to show off my new TV, anyway.
Considering on how big budgets Cameron uses by now you can pretty much forget an R-rating. No studio would finance a 300 Mill. Dollar R-rated film. Not even for James Cameron.Aaron said:If it's not R-rated, he just shouldn't bother. The violence in the manga is an inherent part of the characters. PG13 would be like making a WWII with puppies and rainbows instead of Nazis and bullets.

Visuals and editing was done really well, but just about everything else was pretty bad. Damn sheeple hyping this up for no reason was beyond true from the start.

Probably, yes. However it doesn't change that he will never do it. It's sad, but I understand why big budget R-rated action films aren't made any more. It became way to expensive - without even saying that the risk is way to high. Good ol' 80s and 90s. Miss them...brandonh83 said:But, you have to admit... if they did... he would be the one.
Then there's no way he can do Battle Angel. It will have no hope of approaching the source material. He should produce instead, and give it to Neill Blomkamp to direct.TheExorzist said:Considering on how big budgets Cameron uses by now you can pretty much forget an R-rating. Why does he have to be that faithful to the original? To satisfy the handful of geeks who know it? I don't think so.Aaron said:Then there's no way he can do Battle Angel. It will have no hope of approaching the source material. He should produce instead, and give it to Neill Blomkamp to direct.
Why not just come up with an original property if you're unwilling to treat the source material in the fashion that it deserves? I can't understand that mentality. Like I said, the level of violence in the Battle Angel manga is an intrinsic part of the world and the way the characters develop. It has to be raw to the level an R rating would require or it's just a bit of fluff. It would be like making a PG rated moving out of Saving Private Ryan. Or maybe they should turn Event Horizon into a kid's movie.TheExorzist said:Why does he have to be that faithful to the original? To satisfy the handful of geeks who know it? I don't think so.
I'm not familiar with the Anime but due to the announcement I've read the story summary on wiki and I think it sure is doable without gore.
Mangas/Anime are a very special topic in this regard if you ask me. Because if you want to make a live action movie you can't do it exactly as it is in the original. We've seen what turns out when they do this in the Dragonball movie. There is way to many stuff that may work in the manga/anime but sure does not in a live action movie. So you really have to go a different way here.Aaron said:Why not just come up with an original property if you're unwilling to treat the source material in the fashion that it deserves? I'm not a fan of excessive gore. I find most slasher flicks boring, but this is one property that needs its blood. Otherwise, it'll just be bland and sanitized.

brandonh83 said:The six bonus tracks are terrible. They're like synth versions. I'm not sure whose idea it was to release an "extended" soundtrack which is actually just the same as the regular version but with a small selection of unreleased tracks in Playstation 1 era quality but they shouldn't be allowed to make any kind of decisions ever again, for anyone else or themselves.
Matrix was r-rated? Didn't know that. Well, guess our ratings in Germany/Austria are way more different then yours in this case. I thought the r-rated movies are only the sort of "harder" ones like T2 or something.PhoncipleBone said:Well, the combined total of the Matrix sequels was $300 million, and that was 2003. Today that would be well over $200 each. It is unlikely someone would finance such a huge budget R rated film, but when your last two films each grossed over $1.5 billion globally, that changes things.

Warner Brother's couldn't let it go, even though it'll be surpassed by tomorrow :lolL.A. Times said:Turns out "Avatar" hasn't quite beat "The Dark Knight" yet.
After 20th Century Fox bragged on Sunday that "Avatar" had broken the all-time Blu-ray sales record in just four days with 2.7 million units, Warner Bros. countered on Monday that "The Dark Knight" has in fact sold 2.9 million high-definition Blu-ray discs in the U.S. and Canada since it launched in December 2008.
The last sales figure Warner provided for "The Dark Knight" on Blu-ray had been 2.5 million.
But while "Avatar" hasn't quite taken the crown yet, it's certain to in the coming months, given that it has sold almost as much in four days as "The Dark Knight" has in 16 months.
I know, that's why it's so hilarious that WB would bother to correct it when the sales for the week are going to show it comfortably ahead of TDK. Hell, by the time they released the correction it had probably already achieved that feat.Medalion said:The blu-ray hasn't even been out for a week yet
Dead said:They shouldn't even have bothered to put out that update, it changes practically nothing :lol
I've seen a lot people mention that Avatar is for Blu-Ray what Matrix was for DVD
If that is indeed the case (and it looks like it is), then Avatars home video success is a success for pretty much every studio and blu-ray in general.
Wait, isn't this out on Thursday?? I was going to preorder today but had a mess at NSW Dept of Births Deaths & Marriages to sort out. Fuckers.Scullibundo said:Yeah picked it up from JB today. $25 with the Survival Guide.
You sure are not the only one. I kind of still can't believe it. Only one year ago I thought that the record Titanic pulled will remain forever. I mean, even Lord of the Ring 3 didn't make it near that success.Veidt said:Am I the only one that is still perplexed as to how Cameron managed to literally do the near impossible?
Dethroning Titanic. Over 2.6 BILLION. Insane 3D, with even crazier visuals AND Oscar nominations?
Just..damn.
3D ticket premium, LOL.TheExorzist said:You sure are not the only one. I kind of still can't believe it. Only one year ago I thought that the record Titanic pulled will remain forever. I mean, even Lord of the Ring 3 didn't make it near that success.
Yeah, true. But come on, it made 1 Billion $ more than Titanic.... One BILLION! And as we've seen the 3D ticket premium can't be the only reason for this success as Alice made like 2 Billion less than Avatar.hirokazu said:3D ticket premium, LOL.
(Remember when people were all "bu bu but 3D means less peole actually watched it!"?)
VIRGIN Blue will be taking James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar to the skies today as part of the massive advertising blitz accompanying the film's release on DVD and Blu-ray.
A cross-promotional deal between 20th Century Fox and the airline will see an Avatar logo plastered across a Boeing 737, as well as an in-flight advertising campaign on the airline's planes and boarding passes, and promotions in airports and lounges. The deal will also see $50 Virgin Blue Holidays vouchers inside the packaging of each movie.
The jet will make its debut today when it flies from Brisbane to Sydney with crew members and passengers made up as Na'vi, the blue creatures at the centre of the sc-fi movie, as part of the official launch of the home entertainment formats.
The blitz by Fox is its biggest to date and also includes a tie-in with the Nine Network and outfitting the Bulldogs rugby league team with a one-off jersey.
Avatar is the biggest-grossing film of all time, with worldwide receipts of $US2.5 billion ($2.72bn).
The release of the home discs in the US last week saw 4 million copies sold on DVD, and a further 2.7 million sold on Blu-ray in the first four days.
Fox is a unit of News Corporation, publisher of The Australian.
James Cameron Convinces NASA to Shoot Footage for Him

Well, maybe not for him. The Pasadena Star News is reporting that after a one-on-one meeting, James Cameron, a longtime Mars obsessive, has successfully lobbied NASA into tricking out the latest Mars rover, Curiosity, with a 3-D camera that can film ten frames per second. A non3-D camera, for the rover's mast, was ready to go, and it's unclear whether a 3-D camera will be ready in time for the 2011 launch. Cameron claims just to be interested in NASA getting awesome footage of Mars for the good of humanity, but he probably thinks the James Cameron documentary about Mars would benefit mankind

Just because it's recorded at 10Hz, doesn't mean it has to be played back at that rate. And of course, for science, even a single frame is useful for determining the precise range, and thus size, of objects near the rover.Scullibundo said:Can't say I see the use of 3D at 10fps, but whatever.
