Damn. The realness of many of the shots are still staggering. Scary to think what Wetas work on the sequel will be like :P

Zonadvd sharpen their Blu-ray screencaps, and are in sub-720p.

There are plenty of legit places to get your BD screenshot fix. Blu-ray.com, CinemaSquid.com and DVDBeaver.com are a few. ZonaDVD is not a site you should be relying on for Blu-ray screens.

Just wanted to come in here and say that I got the Blu-Ray yesterday and watched most of it today. The picture quality and sound is indeed godly! I mean really...wow!

I just got my Bluray/DVD copy yesterday, and those screen comparisons do not look fair at all.

I won't discuss that Bluray isn't superior because that would be stupid. But the DVD version looks great and is by far the best looking movie I have ever soon on a DVD.

Also, I cried while watching the movie

That is unfortunate in your case. I suggest that you calibrate your HDTV set or acquire a higher end set. My sets disagree with your assessment completely...

Stop crushing my dreams!

I'll try changing the settings and see what happens. Thank you

Just coming in here to say that nothing you see on the internet even comes close to the Blu-ray.

Is anyone viewing this on a 50"? I'm getting a Plasma next week to replace my 720p LCD, and I was wondering how blu-rays look on such a large screen.

Watching it on a 56 inch and I think it looks incredible. I only have 4 blu rays so saying it looks the best of the blu rays I've watched isn't really saying much, but it's definitely the best quality video I've seen.

Watching on a 54inch panny plasma. Best looking blu-ray i've seen so far. Big screens really show the full benefits of a 1080p resolution.

im gonna watch it on my parents 65' LCD when i finish finals. gotta convince them to buy the blu-ray though, because i don't have a blu-ray player at my place.

should be nice, listening in super surround sound, watching it on that guy...

Thanks! Now I don't know whether to hold out for the bigger screen, I bought Avatar today but it remains unopened.

The lady who served me was confused when it came up as £22, she kept looking at the case, then at the register and then at the case again. Turns out she got confused between the blu and the DVD which had been selling like hotcakes (which was £7 ffs :lol) I should have tried to convince her it was an electronic error, she was pretty damn old.

All he said was that the DVD looks fantastic and that the DVD screengrabs may be lower quality than normal. He did not say that the DVD looked better. He simply said he wasn't going to argue that the Blu Ray was better since there is no argument there.

So if I say that a DVD looks great on my TV, I should recalibrate it?

Perhaps when I get a plasma down the line I will feel that way, but since I have an Rear Projection HDTV, 480p still looks fantastic on my set. Blu Ray content of course looks a whole lot better, but the advantage of having an older set is that even 480i and 480p content is watchable, while the HD content is just fantastic. (And no input lag on old consoles!)

No sequel before 2013 at the earliest. Cameron accepts it will probably take 3 years to make the sequel, which as we all know probably means it will be 2014 if we're lucky.

Tell you what though, he better decide what he's doing next soon. If he does Battle Angel, that is certain to add another 3-4 years ontop of that. Could be looking at 7 years till we see the sequel.

If T2 is anything to go by, that is completely fine with me.

I'm too lazy to look through this thread, but damn thank goodness I own a PS3 and got the DVD along with it, because the Blu-ray copy either will not play at all or not play without pixelation on 3 other players I've tried. Pioneer, LG and my PC. Firmware did not help the Pioneer and the LG and my Lite-on player don't have firmware updates that support this movie yet. Any solutions out there as to how to get it to run fine on my PC? After doing some research, it seems I'm not the only one with this issue.

"['Avatar'] is new age, satanic, demonic paganism, and people are just stunned by the visuals," he said. "Well, the visuals are amazing because Satan wants you to emotionally connect with a lie."

Oh wow. :lol

I just watched this for the first time, on Blu Ray on my dad's 42" plasma.
Holy fuck.
It lives up to the hype, it really does. I didn't want to like it that much, thinking "Nah it's just the hype".
But fuck, it looked beautiful, i was rooting for the Na'vi, i cared about the characters, i was sad when the tree fell.

Fuck, that, was, awesome.

Film looks beautiful on BluRay, but it doesn't really hold up very well.

The story and characters are piss-boring. I was actually rooting for the Colonel to be honest. And that Mother Willow stuff was a bit over-done.

I will add that I am normally in the camp of "upscaled DVD isnt that far off of Blu-Ray" for most movies, but most movies dont look like Avatar.

This and Pixar/Dreamworks movies are really what make Blu-Ray worth the extra money IMO.

I noticed two parts where they used alternate takes of different angles or did a lot of editing to the same take.

The first, when Jake gets his legs on the machine for the first time, he gets most of it onto the machine, then it switches angles and shows Grace about to help is leg up and it's mostly dangling and he puts it up again.

The second, when he's explaining the internal structure of the Hometree in front of the 3D hologram map, it alternates between closeup and behind Jake view a lot. The closeup, his hands are clasped together, the other view his hands are outstretched, holding the edge of the table, but it eventually brings them together to match the closeup shots.

Maybe the 3D made me miss it at the cinema, but now I can't unsee it, arrrgh! >_< I usually never notice these things, but it seemed so glaringly obvious here.

I would like for someone, anyone, to explain to me why Avatar is worth watching WITHOUT referencing the special effects, which few if any people will care about in ten years.

Think that many people asked themself the same question when Star Wars was released back in '77, but yeah, here we are.....
And you are totally right of course, Avatar will be the first "most grossing film" in movie history that will be forgotten after a decade.

it's a fun, fast-paced action adventure movie

If someone could explain to me why people who didn't like this film always require reasons for liking it from the people who did, I'd be a lot happier. Luckily, I don't watch movies thinking about how I'll feel about them in 10 years.

Because it's a beautifully filmed, well edited and well told story, which the effects serve.

Okay, I'm back in because of this comment.

I'll give you beautifully filmed, although I think the movie is pretty ugly and unimaginative (in terms of character and environment design, not animation, which I'll grant is pretty solid), because beauty is subjective and the film as at least crisp and fluid. Okay, so I'll give you that.

Editing I'll also leave alone, because I was so distracted by the horrendous writing and sloppy choreography that editing was the last thing on my mind.

But to say that the story is well told tells me that you don't know what a well told story is. I don't think it's a problem that the story has been told before. Stories are retold all of the time. That's not the problem. If Cameron and Co. had told the fish-out-of-water/white-guilt/two-worlds-collide story with any shred of competence or concern for the craft of writing, I would have loved this movie, I'm sure. Or at least been less than offended at its success. But it's not told well. The dialogue is unbelievable and stiff, the characters are caricatures, one dimensional, and difficult to care about, the pacing is terrible, and everything that happens is to lead into a (poorly done) action sequence instead of in service to the narrative, which should come first and foremost. You can tell that the film was reorganized to make room for more and bigger effects, and it's that very decision that causes the whole project to collapse. They started with something worthwhile, which you can read about here, but ended up with a story that could have been written by a twelve year old child. This is not hyperbole. I believe it to be true.

And what makes it all the worse is that Avatar was made by James Cameron, who, even though he isn't one of my favorite directors, has turned out solid work, including some of the best Sci-Fi and Action films of the 80's and 90's. Terminator 2, The Abyss, and Aliens are all still very watchable, and they present worlds and characters that are believable, that feel real in spite of the fact that they exist in very unreal worlds or scenarios. He used to be a MASTER of that shit. Avatar is not only a step backwards, but feels like a film by an entirely different filmmaker.

To add insult to injury, Cameron is stupidly dishonest about his motivations for this movie. Yes, he admits that the film is meant to be a game-changer (whatever that means) for special effects, and I'm willing to concede that he's done something pretty cool with this new tech, although not world shaking. No, what really kills me is that he's crawled so far up his own ass that he honestly BELIEVES that this film is some sort of environmentalist manifesto and has the audacity to market it as such.

And I guess it's these last few large paragraphs that sum up why I'm so aggravated with the Avatar situation. There are better filmmakers making better films that deserve praise for their story, for their direction, for their social relevance, but people are making Avatar, what will ultimately be a forgettable popcorn flick, out to be a very important film, one that deserves awards such as best picture, which it clearly doesn't.

I eagerly await the flames.

I have to agree with this. Can't look at DVDs these days unless the movie is a boring drama or something. They really do look BAD.
