They actually (mostly) finished the online Pandorapedia during the runup to the blu-ray release. No longer a wiki type of website. Wonder wtf they were thinking with that

If you want to find out about such plants as the Helicoradium spirale

The helicoradian is a type of “sensitive zooplantae” that responds to touch by coiling up so that the single large leaf is no longer exposed to any herbivores that would eat it. Because it grows in clusters, the touch response, or thigmonasty, by one helicoradian often triggers the same response in others growing nearby so that the entire population recoils, one plant after another. This retraction is both defensive and an effective feeding mechanism to trap insects and small animals. (Read more)
Unseen contractile roots belowground aid in the retraction of each folded plant quickly into the ground. The reaction is so swift that it appears that the helicoradians are being sucked into the ground. The Na’vi are able to wander among the helicoradian without triggering this defense response, but are warned of the presence of danger when the plants start to react.

The large, beautiful leaf of the helicoradian is sometimes collected and used by the Na’vi, although they are careful not to over harvest this unusual life form and deplete its population. The brilliant orange pigment is extracted and used as paint, and the leaves are used for garments, tents, and sacks.

Nows your chance

Haha, you guys are never gonna accept that he was right. Someone should straight up ask Cameron since you guys are just gonna make up excuses instead of admitting you're wrong.

"Bu.. bu.. but non-English subtitles, the people who translated that are amateurs!"

"Bu.. bu.. but the subtitles weren't written by Cameron, they're not definitive!"

"Bu.. bu.. but shut up, my ears are right and Cameron's wrong!"

Get yourselves a real fake language

Just watched it at home in HD. I had only saw it in 3D previously. I was not looking forward to it without the 3D theater experience. I have to say, it held up much better than expected. The effects were still incredible and lack of 3D allowed me to focus more on the story and dialogue, which upon further viewing are not as bad as people make them out to be. I remember at my first of several theater viewings thinking it was a little cliche, but then the constant deriding of the movie's story since made me think my thoughts were understated. Having that all in mind I really think it's a better movie and story than people give it credit for, and even without 3D the effects are still incredible.

Cameron did a great job on this and it's on par with his earlier works. More family friendly, but right up there.

i'm definitely not THAT into star trek, but i watch DS9 a lot, and i like having all the great trivia and retrospectives and behind the scenes stuff when i watch an episode. it's like having the entire commentary track cliffs notes. the only thing i've seen come remotely close to that is LOST, with lostpedia.

The Good
* The visuals were phenomenal. Great sense of an alien world without completely losing track of a plausible and enjoyable environment. I was floored more times than I can count on the visuals. The people working on visuals needs more input on the script.

* The main actor did a really good job overall. Most of his lines were delivered very well and made me chuckle on several occasions.

* For some reason I loved the size difference between the humans and the aliens. Sigourney Weaver looks awesome.

The Bad
* The overall plot could have been ungraded from age 12 to at least age 25. Youth feeds off of things they don’t quite get but want to they’re sponges. If you feed them plot written for retarded kids they and everyone older them get zero engagement. Man vs. Nature plot plain and simple.

Business Guy: “Must haz shiny rock!”
New guy: “Why?”
Business Guy: “Shiny rock worth 60,000,000!!”
New guy: “Oh. What does it do?”
Business Guy: “Wut?”

* The movie was basically Dances With Wolves meets Braveheart speeches and Ewok forest fight scenes, add a touch of National Geographic (special tribal edition) and finish off with Green is good.

* Is that a giant bad ass orange bird of death? No waay he’ll ever ride that…

* Our hero in Avatar goes hand to hand with a giant military grade mech. A mech that has a combat knife. Did not buy scene at all.

The Ugly
* The aliens’ entire culture is based off three things. Cats. Indian (Native). Tribal African. The only truly unique thing about them was the penis-hair. I got incredibly tired of the hooting and howling. They simply didn’t seem alien at all in culture. They dressed and were armed and lived like native Americans and sounds like Tribal Africans. I want aliens, show me some culture that’s new.

* So our hero does the “I don’t know if you can hear me” speech and ya the forest wakes up and sends Hammer Rhinos and flappy birds of death. Maybe it should have done that right after man nukes the god tree.

Looks like you might not be able to buy the 3D Blu-Ray set this year.

And in other quasi-release news today, there's unofficial word from our friend Scott Hettrick of Hollywood in Hi-Def that you Avatar fans WILL get your first chance to see the film on Blu-ray 3D format in November... but ONLY packaged with Panasonic Blu-ray/HDTV 3D systems. Panasonic has apparently signed a deal with Fox to make it an exclusive with their hardware for a limited time this year.

Its not like you can use the BR without a 3d TV anyways, and Id wager there are waaaaaaay more people without 3D tvs atm then with.

Finally saw it.

Turned out, I already saw it before, with indians and cowboys.

But this is the very best version of any of the movies this movie was 'inspired' by.

4.5 out of 5

Star Trek was better, but this movie is also incredible.

From the D8 conference.
8:48 pm: Walt is still pressing on windows and the limits they put on consumer choice.

Cameron: I don't really care because I won't have another movie for three years, and by then, all of this will be worked out.

Kara: What's the movie?

Cameron: Maybe four years. Either "Avatar 2? or some other big movie that uses the same technology. 3D.

Sounds like Cameron is going to be ramping up toward the end of the year on either A2 or Battle Angel. Come on ANGEL.

Holy shit I couldn't believe how stupid that sequence was, totally bring the film down, it's like Cameron couldn't decide what the ending was going to be and went the easy way of a by the book deus ex machina

He said his next big movie - either Avatar II or another 3D story - would be filmed in 3D. But he said he hoped he could film and release it in a higher frame rate than the industry standard 24 frames per second. He said the issues some people have had with 3D deal mostly with the "judder" that comes from panning quickly at 24 frames per second, and said today's projectors are much faster. He said a 2K movie at 60 frames per second would look better than a 4K movie at 24 or 30 frames per second.

I don't think cinemas will be adopting digital quite as willingly as they were 3D, but its nice that he's going to keep pushing for it.

So, for those of us who managed to hold strong, didnt give in to temptation, and didnt buy the barebones April Avatar release, has there been any info yet on the November special edition?

The only thing thats been said about it is that it'll be 4 discs and will feature pretty much everything you can think of relating to the movie, according to Jon Landau

So, nothing really new then on that front :(
I havent seen the movie since my last theatrical viewing last December. Im hoping the 4 disc (probably 2 disc Blu) will be worth the wait.

How about the wide theatrical re-release? Has that been confirmed?

Watched a second time now that time has passed to make sure that I was not tainted in my dislike for the film.
No, I still do not like it.

The dialogue is terrible, and the voice delivery is especially terrible when pretending to be blue.
I think they should have also decided to go cg or live action because the scenes where you have live action trying to pretend that they are in a mech or an airship it is really blaring. (The fight at the end especially)
The plot and story is as predictable (and overdone) as possible.
But hey, it sold and sells shitloads so what do I know.

I'm going to watch this again in the theater a bunch of times... just a fun movie to watch. And I like the 3D a lot.

The first time I watch Avatar I was sitting in the theater and all the previews were on... at that point the last few had been in 3D and I was thinking, "What the fuck is this shit... am I in a crappy cinema? Did I get too caught up in the 3D hype and now I'm going to sit through a 3 hour blurry ass movie" The last preview before the feature was advertising some B-movie about piranhas; it looked like shit. The effect was already giving me a headache and the very last shot was this guy waving an outboard motor at the crowd... you see this stupid, blurry white blob of a propeller right in your face that typifies everything I've ever hated about 3D.

I was pretty disappointed.

Then the feature. One of the first shots is that long corridor with all the pods in zero gravity and instead of some stupid thing jumping out at you, there was just amazing depth. I was hooked from that moment. All these shots throughout the movie that would normally be filler were some of the most memorable. Jake wheeling the chair down the ramp onto the tarmac with everything driving by... the sequence is one of my favorite from the film and it's something you can't really appreciate on a regular Bluray or whatever. I thought Cameron's use of 3D throughout the film was often brilliant. Content of the movie aside, it was wonderfully filmed and I'd watch a movie about worms if he took the same care implementing 3D into each shot. Was a nice bonus that I actually liked the movie well enough.

Anyway... folks like to use the word juxtaposition all the time, but I have to say... that's exactly what I was thinking going from the piranhas preview into the first few shots in Avatar.

I think you mean contrast, as juxtaposition doesn't have to include contradictory/conflicting shots.

It doesn't "have" to, but it usually does. Generally juxtaposition implies contrast or comparison. Weird sentence to emphasize considering you're only partially correct. And of course, I was telling a story of my own experience, and that just happened to be the word that came to mind in the theater... so you know... I mean what I mean.

Fuck Jim, give us future Earth. Cut should have been 3+ hours.
Pretty sure he said not too long ago that he cut the Earth scenes for good and wouldn't put them in an actual extended cut. Something about how it felt like the movie had 2 beginnings and the pacing was off.
