Was I dreaming, or was Stephen Lang literally on fire during the making of the movie (you know, the scene in the cockpit in the final battle)? (from the making of documentary)

He was

Scary motherfucker :lol

lol, apparently the new Blu-Ray set a new record.

The special edition re-release of James Cameron's epic got 50% of its sales from the Blu-ray version, a record for a day-and-date BD release without a bundled DVD copy.

No. 1 in sales for Blu-Ray, but narrowly beat by Christmas Carol in DVD sales.

Jesus and that's what, 6 months after the last blu released?

Avatar is the gift that keeps on giving to both fans and the moneyhats.
If they want to keep those Greenbacks flowing in, they need to release an "Ultimate" edition in 2014 before the sequel comes out, with a large majority of those additional scenes completed. Would have been more than enough time between releases, plus it would build hype for the part 2.

I never before thought I'd want to be triple dipped on a movie :lol

I wonder what Hollywood have taken from Avatar's 2D success. There was an insane push for 3D after Avatar hit, now they must know that didn't have such an impact as they thought on it's popularity.

Avatar made 2 Billion dollars overseas, and it had a 50/50 split for 2D and 3D, so yeah. The whole excuse about Avatar's success being solely due to 3D is total bunk.

Cameron said it himself. 3D was the last thing on his mind in terms of what he developed just for Avatar. He already worked out 3D through his documentaries, for him 3D was already just another regular facet of the production.

I do think the films visual 'beautiful' is the reason people love it, not the hammy story or green messaging, although Cameron seems to think it is those things based on what I've heard from him in interviews.

In terms of overseas, Id say its clearly the entire package, rather than simply singling out the visuals.

For example in China, where the movie was an absolutely massive, massive success, the story and message clearly hit a nerve that resulted in its performance. People there were in an uproar when the Government wanted to take the movie out of theaters IIRC

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie had performed even better in America (like 800+ Million) if the movie hadn't been tacked on with the Anti-American label by many. I wonder how successufl the movie was in Middle America, as opposed to California, New York, etc.

I've been out of the loop....so how come my copy doesn’t have the cardboard pages with the pictures? Is it only for the people in the US?

Sorry to bother you, Sculli, but is this walk through in any of the making offs from the latest release? I got my copy yesterday and I'm planning a big party tonight watching all the extras XD.

WHO DISTURBS MY SLUMBER.

Anyway, the blu has a walkthrough which is probably better, but this is different.

Yay I got the CE! Pretty packaging, I don't know what's the complaining for, seems really nice to me. I seldom buy these kind of things, I guess the blank paper inside is just some kind of security thing?

Got a Blu-Ray player and the extended cut set. Unfortunatley it's going under the tree but I'll be soaking up the goods all over the holiday break.

I'll appreciate the "family language" option as well, since I'll be able to show my youngest daughter stuff like the flying sequences without Jake yelling "oh shit!" every 30 seconds.

Mine just came in a shiny slip case, and then in another case with just two big pics on each side of the plastic case. What gives? : (

Thats the Euro release. I actually prefer it to the US one.

I watched everything. Holy shit that was awesome. The footage of that Asian lady as Neytiri was awkward to watch. If the movie looked like that, there would've been some huge backlash. The Navi we got in the movie were definitely photo real. People saying its gonna look dated in a few years are idiots. How can photo real look dated?

The Asian lady is Sun from Lost, not seen it?

I've watched a bunch of the special features on the second disc, and I -still- have no sat down to enjoy the entire 3 hour extended cut yet. I keep telling myself soon. :lol

Really solid collection of content though. Well worth the money.

I don't know a thing about Lost.
She's one of the main characters.

And I agree, the demo isn't nearly as good as the final film, it's interesting in a bizzaro sense though. I thought the alien demo was more interesting, looks like the one from Paul.

The new opening is pretty cool, really liked the transition from Earth to Space, also liked how Jake's speech ties in perfectly to the Earth scenes. I think that's all I will watch of the movie for now, the re-release is still pretty fresh in my mind.

The vastly improved educational montage is the best thing about the new cut. Still not great, but the montage sucked serious ass originally.

My problem with it originally was that it just went by too fast. It felt like it was too soon when they got to the Banshee training. The Grace addition helps convey the passage of time better, so yeah its definitely better paced.

But the early cut of the montage in the deleted scenes is even better.

The Tsutey death scene is the single greatest achievement in CGI in our lifetime.

lolz at the ILM reel. I bet Fox execs peed their pants a little after approving the movie based on that. And thankfully that woman is nowhere near this movie.

lol, there's a great quote from a Fox exec in the making of book

"we're not sure if you're crazier for thinking you can make this movie, or if we are for letting you do it" :lol

Just got the extended edition. Going to watch it tonight. Got a long day of work with little actual work to do between now and then.

There are two spots of bad CG I can never look past when watching the film now. One is where Jake goes to eat with the Na'vi, and just before he steps on somebody's tail, there is a leaf that looks completely unrendered.

Then the same complaint leveled at whatever the Na'vi are using to drag Grace's avatar body up the hill from the fallen Hometree.

Never noticed those, but screw you in advance if you have tainted my future viewings. :lol

The one thing I can't help but notice his when Jake pulls himself up from the cliffside while trying to snag his Banshee. The animation and physics look way, way off. It's almost comic.

US Version > The Rest of the World

BTW, the amount of goodies on the 2nd & 3rd discs is truly immense. Nothing like watching a couple hours worth of behind the scenes to make the purchase of Avatar a 2nd time so totally worth it.

The only thing I don't like is the guy that says "Watch out, hot rod" at the beginning. Looks weird. He may even be real, but I don't like how it looks. :lol

Watched the documentary, it was pretty sweet, although nothing like the one that in the Blade Runner CE, not that I was expecting that as Avatar's production was a seemingly smooth process. :P I pretty much came out of it with two thoughts: one, holy crap Zoe Saldaña is soooo cute, and two, holy crap Stephen Lang is fucking badass.

Watch all the deleted scenes! (Well, after you watch the entire extended cut).

lol, noticed another deleted moment from the film in the set.

During the ILM VFX progression, one of the shots showcased is a part from the final battle where Trudy machine guns down another helicopter, it was 100% finished too.

Between this and those additional shots of Jake vs Quaritch, I wonder how much material from the final battle was trimmed out despite being completely finished

Avatar Extended Directors Cut Fuck Imax edition coming soon.

^^ Unless you own a 3DTV and want to wait for that, then yes, this is the edition to get.

lol

I actually got the Titanic 3 disc collector's edition the other day, and for the first time saw the Deleted Scenes.

They are actually presented like Avatars, with lead ins to put them in context, but its pretty impressive that they are all 100% finished, from effects to music. (was also surprised that there were slightly more deleted scenes post crash than pre)

Though pretty much every single one of the Titanic Deleted Scenes felt rightly omitted, there's nothing there even close to substantial as some of the deleted content in Avatar.

Story wise, I think its pretty clear that Avatar is a 190-200 minute movie, like Titanic. Hell, just reinserting the Dreamhunt alone would bring Avatars runtime to about 190 minutes!

There was some meaningful stuff cut from Titanic if I remember correctly, but for the most part it's a second here, a few seconds there, small pieces of conversation, anything to get the running time down.
