There are still no major publications represented there, though. But I have little doubt that it'll fare pretty well.

Well, James Berardinelli is a well-known critic. I'm half-expecting mixed reactions from the top tier reviewers.
Well, yeah -- it's pretty much a given that they'll be harsher. I'd guess, though, that it'll still end up over 70%, at least.

Got my passes. Gonna see it on Thursday.

After Deppsperado the only way I'll see a Robert Rodriguez movie is for free. :p

Robert Rodriguez >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> you.

Desperado was the only one of his movies which was decent. BArely decent.

From dusk till dawn was agreat movie until he took over.

Yeah, not to mention they stuffed that mongoloid bitch Devon Aoki in this one. Jesus shit that bitch looks like a retard.

Hopefully she's not on screen much so I don't puke on the poor folks in front of me.

Oh well, I'll always have Desperado. The last good Robert Rodriguez movie. :D

El Mariachi was awesome for what it was and Rodriguez kicks ass for going through medical experimentation to earn the money to make it.

Desperado was awesome thanks to nekkid Salma.

The Faculty: +100 for Jordana Brewster, -1000000000000000 for Harry Knowles.

Spy Kids 1-3 are good kids movies.

nekkid salma was great but im sorry the action was not well choreographed and the script was horrible for all his movies so far.

The Johnny Depp scenes in Once upon a time in Mexico were beyond amazing. The Antonio Banderas scenes were decent too!

As a big Robert Rodriguez fan and a newcomer to the Sin City comics I'm confident that the movie will be a helluva lot of fun to see. My guess is that it will end up around 74% (I hope I'm wrong) on Rotten Tomatoes. The one negative review that was posted so far is a complete joke and I'm worried we'll have more negative reviews simply because Sin City is so politically incorrect. Big time critics rarely give enough respect to comic book films (save for Ebert's great appreciation of Spider-Man 2) and I wouldn't be surprised to see the new NY Times bitch whine about all the violence against women.

Yea, that negative review was ridiculous :lol it was like the guy went to see another movie and he didn't understand anything that was going on or why it was there.

And I liked Once Upon a Time in Mexico, more than Desperado (Save for that nude scene). everything was just so outlandish, I thought it was pretty funny.

OUATIM had great cinematography, great action, and a great performance from Depp. The only thing I didn't like about it was the completely fucking incoherent story (Why is he getting a new face, why?!)

Huh? Spiderman 2's ratings are through the roof. The first two Superman movies received rave reviews. Tim Burton's Batman flicks each received a respectable overall rating, and both X-Men movies are above 80%. Critics have been more than respectable to good superhero movies through the years so I doubt they'll stop now. If Sin City deserves a high rating, it'll receive it. Don't let a couple small time critics sour your opinion of movie reviewers; most are very good at what they do.

So he could escape, since the police knew what he looked like? I dunno, the story didn't seem all that complicated to me. Maybe it was because I was so entertained by everything else going on, I didn't bother looking for plot holes.

While Spidey 2 finished at over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, I was referring to the fact that most critics won't bust out a 4 star review for a comic book movie. If I'm not mistaken Roger Ebert was the only major film critic to put the film on his top 10 list of the year. I like that critics are at least giving comic films a positive note but I still feel that haven't fully embraced the genre.

I have mixed feelings on the major film critics (NY Times, LA Times, Time, Slate, etc.). They clearly have a vast library of film knowledge but I think they tend to overrate certain genres while not giving full respect for other genres. Rotten Tomatoes is a great resource for all the reviews and I can say that I don't ever recall enjoying a film that was deemed "Rotten." When the mass film writers say a movie is shit, it almost always is. However, there are many times when they overrate a film I would never give a "Fresh" review. In college I dabbled in film journalism at the U of M newspaper and it definitely gave me a new appreciation for what goes into a film review but I get really pissed off when Oldboy gets a C from Entertainment Weekly or when Ebert gives Team America a single star.

You guys are crazy if you think this falls below 80%. In fact, I fully expect it will finish over 90% or just below it.

Robert Rodriguez is so voerrated as a director. Nonetheless, Sin City looks like it'll kick loads of ass.

My count in the dark screening room is probably off by a few hash marks here and there, but I can offer an approximate count of the graphic orgy of blood and violence: nine instances of torture (including two heads stuck into toilet bowls), at least ten severed heads, some of them talking like the museum pieces in "Futurama," nine severed limbs including hands, arms, a shot off ear, a bullet in the crotch, one ripped-out penis, one head bashed to a pulp, two electric chair shocks, three throats cut (one of them partially, like a "Pez dispenser"), dozens of shots to the head, including that of a deviant priest, one execution-style mass-machine-gunning, and a suicide. If you enjoy this sort of stuff, "Sin City" might be good for a kick or two, but there's no doubt that it's bad for your soul.

:lol Thanks for the scorecard.

Yea, same here. The commercials don't really tell much about the story, and it's kind of hard to explain it to people.

Especially when there is an add that says "Sexy Singles online" right next to it with a half naked woman.

I guess working on a college campus gives me a better chance and all since just last night when the commercial played during 24, about 3 of the patrons of the place I work were talking about how much they were dying to see it. I've probably heard at least 15 or 20 people go gaga over it "in real life."

My organization has a group of nearly 20 people going to the Drafthouse showing opening day.

I know a ton of people interested obviously.

Really? A lot of people I know are amped for this movie and they do not read comics, play videogames, or post on internet forums. The movie looks fantastic and I think that the commercials are quite attractive and will lead to a DAMN good opening.

Surprisingly, most people I know are highly anticipating this flick, and just to prove that they're largely mainstream n00bs with no taste for anything half decent, a couple of them thought Shaolin Soccer sucked.

I think my friends and I might go and see it this weekend. Probably the first movie we'll see on the first weekend since Matrix Reloaded. So we're hyped.

yeah, i loved Once Upon a Time in Mexico.. most people dont seem to realize that its purposefully over the top.. even though they basically explained why in the first scene (its a fable.. and thus outlandish and exaggerated, etc.)

I actually know a lot of people who are amped for this movie.

And yeah, I definitely believe that RT can be iffy if the film is in the 60% range. You gotta take it at what it is if its between fifty and sixty percent... critics were just about split. But either way, if it's at the far ends of the spectrum (below 20 and above 80) you gotta recognize. I ignored it in my arrogance and saw Alexander on opening night.

I learned my lesson. :)

Why? They both say the same thing (is the movie good or bad?).

Besides, Metacritic > RT average rating :)

Bah, it's down to 74%. I still think it'll finish over 85% but that could just be wishful thinking at this point. Regardless, I know it's going to kick my ass. :rock

I'm posting on a videogame message board. NO SHIT. As for being a comic book geek, no. I haven't read Sin City in my life and hadn't even heard of it until this movie was announced.
