Its not about people having an avatar of themselves, its about everyone ditching the masks they hide behind all at once, it was a uniting and great experience to see the faces behind the posters, added a new dimension to GAF imo, made things more real, and it was fucking awesome, and as Gareth said this is just like the 'Rage Against the Machine for Christmas NO.1 copycats' after the first year where people had gotten that sense of empowerment that they could stop the corporate bullshit hitting No.1 every time, it was then completely ruined by a disarray of bullshit where copycats ruined the whole thing, its like 1 step forwards, 2 steps backwards.

The guy who made the original thread (which was just a spillover from the drunk thread and not the highly formalized event you seem to think it was) is not the dude who PMed me about doing this one, so I didn't credit him specifically, but I did link to that thread for all to see. The guy who made the OT2... well I don't know that much about him but he seems pretty cool I guess. I did of course credit Sentry for all the awesome compilations and collages found on the OP of that thread!

It does feel like by jumping the gun and not waiting until January to roll around again you're distilling the idea. I thought it was a great social experiment, and it's uniqueness at the time contributed to how many people joined in, but this just feels a bit weak. I've nothing against people using real pictures as their avatars, I think it promotes a higher standard of conversation and manners, but to take the idea of Real Pic January and just rehash it for a different month taints the idea, in my opinion.

It could've been this really interesting period on GAF every 12 months where everyone would, in sync, switch to real pictures. Now it just seems like a fad before the next person decides to create Real Pic August/September/ etc etc.

It's gone from something genuinely special and unique to being effectively a GAF meme. And I think in doing so you'll get far less participants, which completely ruins the idea of it. It's been five months since RPJ ended, this is far too soon.

I don't have a really great pic that was taken after New Year's Day (the current pic). But my geodesic dome is almost complete, so hopefully I'll get a cool climbing shot that I can switch to this coming month.

If we do it numerous times a year it will become boring, keep it for january, makes more sense if its once a year at the start of every year

Would it help you to imagine this as the mini-summer version where old friends and new acquaintances alike can experience a taste of the magic and celebrate the birth of a nation in style, whereas January will remain the true and original mountain of Real Pic Majesty, and all other attempts at Real Pic Months are shamed and derided as vile abominations of the gravest order?

Cause if that would help, you know. Do that.
