Sources have said that Microsoft will be announcing several big announcements before Summer Game Fest on June 9th.

One of the bigger announcements is that Microsoft will be launching a new service to seemingly compete against PlayStation Plus' time-limited game trials that were announced earlier this year. The feature will be coming to Xbox Game Pass members within the next year and will begin with a focus on helping independent game developers across the globe. They'll be several smaller announcements too, including the expansion of cloud gaming to other countries to make the service more accessible. It's expected that the announcements will be made several hours prior to the Summer Game Fest show on June 9th.

That's cool, but in MS's case I see this benefiting 3P games not in GamePass more than their own games, so it's a bit limited in that respect. Reason being, if you're getting all their 1P games Day 1 in the service anyway as well as quite a few 3P indie and AA games, why would you need to demo them? You could just download or stream the full game and decide if you want to sink more time into it or not.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it seems a bit redundant for MS to be doing this considering their angle for GamePass, as well as having EA Play in there and potentially Ubisoft+ as well. Unless....certain things are changing with that current GamePass approach 🤔....
 
Expansion of cloud gaming to more locations is bigger news than timed game trials. Game Pass needs subscribers.
 
Xbox already supported time limited trials ages ago! That was the exact reason I ended up buying "It takes two"

The guy that wrote the article is clueless. MS has put up summer game fest demos the previous few years.
 
I don't understand why, especially if MS are compensating them, just put the full game on instead or invest the money into a different game. Oh well as long as they aren't trying to charge us more for them, then I'll just ignore them. Whatever.
 
If you think this is a copy of Sony's demopass you haven't read the article. It specifically says it would be helping independent game developers and be based on voluntary enrollment. Two big differences.

It's literally written in the article that devs would be compensated for the demos.

You should really read the article before blasting off

Developers that choose to enroll in the project will not only get the necessary data needed for game development, but Microsoft will reportedly also be compensating developers for participating (exact details not disclosed).

Yeah, if this is strictly demos for game pass subscribers for games that will already be going to game pass .. this is entirely pointless.

Unless there's more about this that we don't know yet, like this being accessible to all Xbox live/gold subscribers regardless of GP subscription.

Yea, people trying to compare the two are being (probably intentionally) misleading. One requires the highest tier...the other is just part of the service. Regardless tho demos shouldn't be money gated at all.

This would apply for games outside the service list, I would think. Much like the Sony thread that people lost their selective marbles over.
 
What's the benefit of demos if Game Pass is all about access to full games?

Possibly but its saying Game Pass demos so to me something sounds wrong

If it is demos for Game Pass games then its one of the dumbest things I have heard and should be ridiculed endlessly

When you put it that way, this might also be MS's way of addressing a criticism or concern they've gotten from several devs behind-the-scenes, that they feel their games won't be viable on Xbox if they aren't a part of GamePass. So if these demos are available outside of a GamePass subscription, and for other devices besides just Xbox, I guess this could be their way of abating those concerns.

Though again, the tweet and article in the OP clearly make this about GamePass demos, which would be redundant if it's a feature tied mainly or only to GamePass since the point of that service is you get full games to download or stream as part of the sub, including new Day 1 indies and 1P games. I don't see the hype behind introducing this feature to GamePass specifically unless MS plan to do more Early Access stuff like they did with Forza Horizon 5.

And if they do that, then they might be redefining what "Day 1 on GamePass" actually entails so there's a brief window where the game's available for purchase but not in GamePass, like how these movie studios are doing 30-day/45-day theater windows before bringing new blockbuster releases to their streaming services.

You get demos of games that are not in Game Pass so that you can buy them if you enjoy. Don't people buy games they enjoy that are on Gamepass? It's basically the same thing, you just have to pay upfront.

It's weird that a demo is becoming a product in itself. They whole idea is to invest time and resources to potentially sell more units of software by allowing a taste of the experience.

The article does not use the phrase Game Pass Demos.

That is a liberty taken by the OP.

We don't know the developer opt in or opt out.

The only way you can opt out as a dev on the Sony platform is to reduce the price of the game.

As a consumer, you dont/shouldn't care.

Nah, not at all. The service launched already in Asia and it proved that bit of info being BS.

Since all those $42 (wholesale) games on up do not have trials. It is who decides to do it on their own accord.

Technically I think the story says they have like 90 days to implement a demo.

I would hold fire but it might be BS

How do we contradict each other and how about you read the article which explains how it works.

My understanding is MS pushing independent development by allowing demos of games they already are bankrolling for GP, like Tunic or Weird West or others. On top of paying for the development and putting the game on GP they would implement a demo for everyone else (or Gold subs maybe idk).
 
Better than nothing I guess.

Pretty dumb we all had tons of demos during the 360/PS3 era (even for indie games), and literally probably 95% of demos disappeared recent gens.

And now it's baked into GP and PS Premium.

In addition to this announcement, Microsoft will also be announcing an extension to their Samsung partnership, which will allow people to stream Xbox games on their Samsung Smart TV's without a console via Cloud Gaming.

They'll be several smaller announcements too, including the expansion of cloud gaming to other countries to make the service more accessible.

That actually makes no sense, they were not allowed to make demos before? What a weird policy to have.

Xbox have been doing these indie game demo events for a few years now. Most of the games were shit, but there were always 5-10 games to look forward to. For example, we got to play Tunic months and months before the release.

I assume this is no different, right?
