Nokia is planning to launch its first Windows RT tablet in September. Sources familiar with Nokia's plans have revealed to The Verge that the company will unveil its tablet at a special launch event in New York next month. Nokia has been courting developers for the event, and it's tentatively scheduled for September 26th. We understand that Nokia will unveil a tablet, currently codenamed Vanquish, that features Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and Windows RT. Nokia's tablet will include LTE support, and will be made available on AT&T in the US.

Alleged photos of what appears to be a Verizon variant of Nokia's tablet leaked to Chinese site Digiwo today. The photos show the rear of a red 10.1-inch tablet with the Verizon, Windows RT, and Nokia logos. The size and logo placement are consistent with genuine photos of Nokia's canceled Nvidia-powered tablet. Nokia was originally developing that particular Windows RT device with a unique battery-equipped keyboard cover. It's not clear if the latest Qualcomm-based tablet includes the cover, but we'll likely discover this and a lot more during Nokia's event next month.

I applaud Nokia for releasing quality products on the Windows platform.. May not be the most successful platform but you have to give it to them for sticking to it. If Nokia sticks around I honestly believe they will be the HP/Lenova of the PC market for the mobile market in the post-pc world. I recently purchased a HTC ONE and I'm really enjoying it, I also purchased a Lumia 920 in yellow for a college - what a sexy piece of hardware. I may just jump on the next Lumia generation early q1 2014 if Nokia keep this up.

Reminds me of the concepts flying around last year.

Probably will end up being another sexy Nokia device but RT doesn't have enough apps at present to make me consider one over an iPad if I were to get another tablet.

Really? It's like the worst platform. Nokia's smartphone business is circling the sink hole.

Whilst that would undercut the iPad I think it'd still need to be a bit cheaper yet to tempt anyone to RT, but I can't see them going massively cheap with it unless Microsoft help out with say a subsidy to get devices out there.

Codenamed Sirius apparently

We're told that Nokia's tablet will be thinner than the current iPad, and lighter at just over a pound in weight. The body of the device will be colored, and Nokia plans to include a 6-megapixel camera at the rear with a 2-megapixel shooter at the front. The 10.1-inch display that Nokia is planning to use will run at 1920 x 1080 resolution, and has been improved for outdoor readability thanks to a high amount of bright output. Sources have also revealed that the tablet will feature Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor alongside 2GB of RAM. We understand Nokia is aiming for 10 hours of solid battery life with LTE connectivity. Other features include a microSD port to extend the 32GB of storage, a Micro HDMI connector, and a Micro USB port.

Nokia is also planning to ship a keyboard accessory with its "Sirius" tablet that includes a battery for additional charging. Other optional accessories will also be made available at launch. We're told Nokia's tablet will be priced comparatively with Apple's iPad, and that the company won't try to undercut pricing initially. Nokia will unveil the tablet at a launch event in New York, which is currently scheduled for September 26th. The Finnish smartphone maker is also planning a "Bandit" 6-inch Windows Phone device that will be made available later this year.

I have to give it to them, they just keep on finding more ways to compound the fail.

See, you say that, but...

RT is stupid, yeah, but them sticking with Windows isn't a bad gambit to make at all, especially what with Blackberry going tits up now

I will still be amazed if this thing actually ships, fully to the public. Surely someone at Nokia still has enough of a clue to kill this before birth.

RT runs like crap on the Surface, and I'm not convinced it'll run much better on those specs.

Unless it's considerably cheaper than an iPad (and it seems that it won't be) I think I'll just wait for the Surface Pro 2.

Snapdragon 800 is a good step up from Tegra 3 in Surface.

I wonder how the app situation is looking on the Windows Store, that's the only thing holding me back from grabbing one these. I think I'll sit back and see what MS does next with it's surface line.

Nokia have been doing well lately, their phones seem to be resurging lately. I saw someone with a 1020 (I think that's what it's called) the other day, looked amazing.

I really like Windows 8 but it's true, they're still lacking a lot of stuff like a proper Facebook app. Even WebOS on tablet had that.

I still don't get this. Why is Facebook (and Youtube for that matter) refusing to develop for this platform?

Facebook i am surprised at, but Google I'm not. Look at how they treat Windows Phone, no surprise W8/RT has nothing.

So where is the official app?

Well, more like two months ago. But I agree with your point.

Trying to use the regular facebook site on Internet Explorer RT makes it feel like years, everytime chat pops up, the tablet freezes for 5 seconds.

In other words, get a Facebook app now Microsoft or fucking dump RT because you can't expect anyone to bite on a App based OS without the Apps we need.

I bet it'll look fantastic - Nokia is one of the few companies who make plastic (polycarbonate?) look great.

But christ, that software.

Just make a mini tablet that competes directly with the Nexus 7. Much more growth in that subsection of the market rather than the already dominated iPad market.

Why would anyone get this over much cheaper tablets like Nexus?

Yep, exactly. Specs are great, and a Metro-only UI that totally ditched the desktop would be great. But at $500, why on earth would you buy this over an iPad or a much cheaper Nexus? It makes no sense at all.

Get MS to subsidize a lower price point. At least at $399 it might have a fighting chance.

I'll be disappointed beyond words if they finally go the RT route.

A proper Nokia tablet with Windows 8 would be tits, but RT? Nobody wants RT.

I very much prefer my Surface RT to any of the iPad's and Android tablets I've owned. I really hope Surface RT2 or Nokia's tablet have the highest end ARM processors and over 10hr's of battery. I'll get one that day.

But i'm obviously in the minority.

I got offered a new surface RT (32GB) for €190 through some educational program thing.

Seems like a decent deal for something to browse the web and read mail on, since pricewise that's on par with the cheapest android tablets. Makes me think MS have lost all hope for this thing though.

Here's a Surface RT I'd buy if I was actually interested in spending as much as I did on my iPad 2 again.

I don't know what benefit there would be to removing the desktop. With Windows 8.1 they've put all the settings on the Metro side, so you don't really have to use the desktop unless you really want to.

In my opinion the desktop is actually one of the strengths of Windows on tablets. You can take that Windows RT tablet, plug in a mouse, a keyboard, and an external display, and then use Office on the big screen together with the desktop IE.

I'd take it over an iPad any time.

So where is the official app?

First, let me address the obvious fallacy. Who gives a fuck about the "official" app ? Traditionally the "official" apps sucked ass most of the time (just look at Twitter for instance. They still didn't get their shit together and their app mostly sucks on every platform).

Regarding those FB apps....i don't use FB so i have no idea how those apps are. I doubt all of them are unusable and you must cross off Windows 8 because of the FB app. My point is that there are apps out there for whatever strikes your fancy.

Ironically personally i think the problem with RT was never the lack of apps. It was the Surface RT price. If MS would have released something priced competitively with Nexus 7 (and make Surface RT a 7 inch tablet), they would have had a fighting chance. Right now Android is too ingrained in the market to gain any significant market share.

Yet it is the most common complaint in every RT thread.

Is it not going to be an RT2? At this point, they should have realized the smart money is on the small tablet side with a $250 and under price point.

Doesn't Nokia belong to Microsoft ?

No, MS doesn't own them but they are BFFs, MS wants Windows Phone hardware, Nokia wants an alternative to Google.

RT2 is coming as well from Microsoft, I imagine it will be a similar device. There's at least one rumor saying it'll have a finger print sensor.

A tablet with such a lack of apps could only be made appealing by being cheap and having value (A good-looking, unique, solidly built brand name tablet for $150)

Otherwise, it might be worth it to Nokia to look at AMD and Intel solutions for full Windows 8.

Honestly, how many Blackberry customers are going to jump to Microsoft once BB falls apart? The majority will probably go to Android or Apple.

just fucking get rid of RT MS ...what a dumb move get win 8 or 7 running on your surface shit you dont need all these OS's get this shit synced up and be the first to have it all running the same OS's and stuff damn , you do good when you simplify.
