Rumor: Titanfall also 720p?

Didn't you get the memo? 720p is fine. Upscaling takes care of all our visual gaming needs, anything higher than that is a waste.

In fact the the entire videogames industry has agreed to stop the foolish pursuit of high resolution gaming. 720p is now the defacto standard for gaming. Nothing more.

From this point forward any game rendering at a higher resolution than 720p will be rejected for certification at MS and SONY. Steam will also refuse to house any game that foolishly breaks the new decree.

720p. It's just good enough.

hmm just realized why "xbox 720" as a name was scrapped :D

The problem is not that the Xbox720 is weaker, it's a combination of that and PS4 cheaper by 100$.

Good luck with that. The exclusives better be good. And when I mean exclusive, I mean not on PC / 360.
Also I agree 100% with this

I'm just looking to confirm that people are now calling the Xbox One the Xbox 720p.

Well, you are at least. That's 1.

Its just "xbox" to me, just like the 360 was, and just like the OG xbox was.

I believe that the fear of being thought of as lower than 1080p was a legitimate reason for not going that route. In the same light as Xbox 2 sounding lower than Playstation 3

This is kind of what I've been saying. It's more of a PR problem (which could be significant; Who knows) than a substantive problem -- The common consumer does not care about something like this. They don't care at all if one console is marginally (or even more than marginally) more powerful than the other.

The cheaper price [of PS4] does matter, though, I think it matters a lot. And the 720p thing feeds into a festering PR problem -- That the PS4 is cheaper and more powerful. This could be real. But 720 vs. 1080, on its face, is not significant to the common consumer.

I agree completely.

There is a chance that casuals realise that its $100 more because of Kinect 2 being bundled with the system, i know thats a long shot though as no one on Gaf seems to realise that.

Hopefully they do, and hopefully they buy. I hope the systems sell 50/50.

Competition is good. Ideally Nintendo would be in the game and it would be a 33% split of the market. Then they would have to fight tooth and nail to get market share, and we would get a WAY better product.

I think most gamers know that Kinect adds to the price. Microsoft problem is that most gamers don't care about Kinect, so they feel like paying 100$ for something they don't want.

I could be wrong, of course.

I'm not going to call it anything other than Xbox, or Xbox One. Xbone just sounds ridiculous when said aloud.

While I have been a proponent of not over dramatizing this resolution malarkey, looking at the visual fidelity of Titanfall (and CoD), I am struggling to think what in them is breaking the camel's back so to speak given Ryse managers to look astounding and be 900p, albeit running at 30fps?

The exclusives better be good. And when I mean exclusive, I mean not on PC / 360.

Seeing as how good PC hardware is objectively superior to all console hardware and a PC port has no chance of making the console version look any worse than it would if it were console-exclusive, why would you not want the option to play the game at its very best? Console war stuff is so weird.

The PS2 didn't happen?

Not sure what you're getting at but here goes...PS2 vs Xbox vs GCN was great competition and the best of the 3 kicked ass (PS2). It forced Xbox to be better with 360 and that early lead pushed Sony to make the PS3 great. Competition gave us 2 great consoles.

A better comparison will be Battlefield 4 MP. Ryse seems to be a very linear, corridor style SP game. The MP map(s?) shown is pretty condensed too.

Well, Sony PS3 bullshit started because they felt they were Kings, and they humbled as soon as they felt menaced.

Problem is Microsoft started their bullshit without even being King. I could understand Sony arrogance at the time, but Microsoft one is kind of a mystery.

Nothing to do with console war. If you want a killer app to sell your console, you don't put it elsewhere. Simple business stuff.

because then I would not need the platform. easy I guess?
the same with ps4. unless you think that if magically the aaa sony exclusives launched on pc, that would not cost to playstation loss of value.

Being at the top doesn't mean that the winner would suddenly stop trying to compete, It just means that the other 2 has to work harder. I was using the PS2 as an example of what happens when 1 console dominates and they still had tons of games coming out. In terms of services and other things, keeping gamers satisfied so they can spent more money is good.

For the LOVE OF PC!

My 2 cents, if I only cared about game-play and not graphics, I would play this game on 360. But I do, so PC it is.

Here here. I'm a graphics whore. Better graphics make MY enjoyment of games better. FACT. Low IQ makes it harder to shoot enemies at a distance accurately when they're a shimmery mess. I enjoy high IQ levels on top of really great looking games, that's why I spend so much money on having a top of the line PC.

Ah gotcha, great point. Definitely didn't consider the idea that you don't need an even split of market (or be losing) to compete and deliver a great product.

This is a problem? I'd be happier if I didn't have to buy consoles for a handful of exclusives that would look better on PC.

I suppose I'd care about the Playstation brand if I owned stock in Sony.

The Wii outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 by millions last gen (if that even counts - I think it does) but where was the better experience to be had overall for most of us?

For myself, the Xbox 360 primarily. I did however play Uncharted series on PS3, as well as bigger titles like Heavy Rain, KZ 2/3, TLoU etc.

I never got around to buying a Wii.

I wonder how uncomfortable EA is with the Microsoft Xbox One backlash. March release sounds great and all, but I wonder if the PS4 port will hit sometime in November. Hmmm

Maybe size and scope of map and 60 fps?

I think a lot of Microsoft's exclusive partners regret their arrangements pretty deeply right now and will endeavor to wriggle out of them as soon as they can.

I'm not much of a graphics tart, but if I was buying a new, 500+ dollar box in 2013 I'd be a little perturbed that it was struggling to hit native resolution on my set. When it comes to console/PC games 1080p and a solid framerate are my only two consistent desires for visuals, personally. Clarity, crispness and good UI real estate are always wonderful to have.

That's been my guess all along. That gives them 6 months to port it (which is totally doable), and it's exactly when EA would want it out.

And here is where the Sony advantage in 1st party studios is going to kick Microsoft I'm the teeth. BF4, COD, and all the other multi plats will go to every platform because EA and Activision want to make as much money as possible. Naughty dog, Santa Monica, MM, and all the other Sony Studios can afford to make their next AAA games on PS4 only. There's 21 reasons to buy PS4 according to the latest SCEE video in development.

How many reasons to buy an X1 are in development?

My 2 cents. Is the game still fun at 720p? I think it will be just fine.

If the resolution and IQ don't matter, you should just play on 360. Unless that's not good enough, in which case I think I've detected an inconsistency in your position that can only be explained in one way.

Here's a scenario I was pondering.

Microsoft overclock the shit out of these first batch xb1 and release future batches later with bigger specs.

Could this happen?
I believe with such hardware that both Sony and MS will release sooner than later and approach the design as such to follow basic upgrade rules like PCs/Tablets/Phones - fully backwards compatible and releasing in standard periods at better prices.

Its certainly what I would hope for.
