The Russian president has repealed the ban prohibiting the delivery of S-300 missile air defense systems to Iran, according to the Kremlin's press service. The ban was introduced by former President Dmitry Medvedev in 2010.

“[The presidential] decree lifts the ban on transit through Russian territory, including airlift, and the export from the Russian Federation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and also the transfer to the Islamic Republic of Iran outside the territory of the Russian Federation, both by sea and by air, of air defense missile systems S-300,” says the information note accompanying the document, RIA Novosti reported.

The decree enters into force upon the president’s signature. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the decision, saying that Moscow’s voluntary embargo on S-300 deliveries was no longer necessary, due to the progress in Iran’s nuclear talks made in Lausanne on April 2.

He added: “We believe that at this stage there is no longer need for this kind of embargo - from the Russian side it was unilateral and voluntary.”

The foreign minister also said: “Meanwhile, a modern air defense system is now very relevant to Iran, especially taking into account the severe escalation of tensions in neighboring areas and especially the rapid development of military activity in Yemen in recent weeks.” Lavrov added that the S-300 is an air defense missile system, which is of a purely defensive nature. It is not designed for attacks and “will not put at risk the security of any state in the region, including Israel," he said.

They'll be useful considering the peaceful remarks of one of the countries in the neighbourhood.

I'm pretty sure if the U.S. were to attack nuclear facilities, shitloads of cruise missiles would be deployed not aircraft.

I could be wrong though.

A pragmatic choice. Russia has nothing to lose, because of the ongoing sanctions.

It is a valid option to create alliances with various Shi'ite elements and possibly with China as well in order to counter USA in the pacific theater. Realpolitik with normal profit motives.

Nah, this is good, basically makes Iranian air space off limits to any country but the US. Israel can get fucked, they have to lay off Obama's Iran deal now.

Missile defense is purely defensive unless they are placed by NATO in countries Russia wants to bully like Poland, then it's an act of agression.

S-300 is designed to defend against cruise missiles.

Yeah but .. how many would they have to have to effectively repel a concentrated strike?

I guess these would be effective vs many middle-east nations but im gonna wager the U.S. military can overpower a defense system from 1979..

This is all hypothetical and probably non-sense, just interesting to think about.

S-300 is no joke, one of the best air defence systems out there.
Has to be solely to dissuade any Israel activity.

Edit: Maybe I was thinking of the S-400.

It's not so much about repelling a concentrated attack from NATO or any coalition of advanced militaries. Obviously no country short of the US itself, Russia, or China could withstand that. It's about promising enough attrition to an invading air force to make it not worth the trouble.

I'm sure if the Israelis wanted to bomb Iran they could get around the S300's defenses, they had no problem in Syria against the same system.

China just bought some s-400, so s-300 to iran really not that cutting edge.
still a very useful weapon, especially if you have enough and placed strategically

In this case, they have the benefit of knowing exactly where to place them: around nuclear facilities. I imagine if the sabres start to rattle, Iran will just cluster it's air defenses around those.

After all, giving that they are buried below mountains, they know only the very latest bunker busters would have to be used.

Will do good to scare off the Israelis I bet.

It's also probably going to annoy the Saudis as well. Which for the russians could be rather bad for their oil incomes. Saudis can always depress the market even more.
Meanwhile the US are probably quite happy with the sale as it annoys Bibi a lot.
