Saddest extinction to you?

Paraceratherium

Twice as large as an elephant. A relative of the rhino, horse, and tapir. As large as a medium sized sauropod dinosaur. Basically a mammalian apatosaurus.

The largest land mammal that has ever lived.

Imagine the possibility!

All of them but particularly driven to extinction by humans. Shit's infuriating.

Goddamn.

I thought the Onion, or satire in general, was supposed to be funny. But this piece of satire is gut-wrenching. :(

The thing I don't get is that they make money from the fins, no? Why wouldn't they want to help keep sharks from going extinct if they could keep making money off of them?
They're only interested in short term gains.

They were almost completely wiped out by hunting in the late 19th Century and presumed extinct until 1971, when a single male was discovered. "Lonesome George" was taken into captivity for safekeeping and despite numerous attempts to mate him with females from close subspecies, he was never able to produce offspring and died alone, the last of his species, in 2012 :(
There has been some recent good news about tortoises lately, at least:

Having been to the Galapagos and seen these majestic animals in person, it would break my heart to see them disappear.

God I love prehistoric animals. And prehistoric art.

What about the Irish Elk?

I love prehistoric art and animals too! That is one magnificent elk.

You can care about humans more than other animals, but having no compassion for any other living being that doesn't "serve" us is sad. The world would be a better place if so many people didn't have this brand of selfishness.
Not surprising to see selfishness from someone who won't wash his hands after using the bathroom... :\

The Mammoth.

We're at fault. We killed them all. We need to fix it.

There is every likelihood if we hadn't, the Mammoth might have survived into our times via themselves directly or some descendent breed that doesn't resemble an Elephant.

It was a stupid bird that couldn't fly and could only be found in one place. It's nothing special.

Penguins seem to fall under that descriptor as well. Why would flying or where you could find it be qualifiers on how much of worth something is?

Yep. The whole species killed by a pet and only a year after it was first discovered. It's sad because of how innocent the story is. Poor lighthouse keeper must have felt rather guilty despite it not really being his fault.

He is at least partly to blame, though. Domesticated cats kill countless birds each year, contributing to the extinction of many bird species. If you're a cat owner who lets their pet roam free outdoors, you're contributing to these sad statistics.

To answer the question, I'm most bummed out at the giant animals that died. Dinosaurs, Moas (and other huge birds) and all the badass creatures that roamed North America before the ice age. I'd love to have them around.

I was watching an episode of Qi the other day and apparently for 250 odd years after their discovery, the giant tortoises from Galapagos Islands were not categorised into species because no specimens mad it back to England. Every single one was eaten on the ship carrying them back to England because they were apparently too delicious.

Bloody amazing and sad.

this thread is incredible but it really does make me sad to know how much of a direct impact we've had on fucking over some of these beautiful creatures, and even worse, the fact that we apparently have no plans on stopping our selfishness.

I want to know what Dodo tastes like, looks really tasty.

Actually, it was well known for being absolutely disgusting. In fact the Dutch who discovered it first gave it a name translating roughly to 'revolting bird'.
They were fearless birds who could easily be captured for their meat for the remaining sea-voyages but they were left alone. They died out because introduced animals raided their nests.

The Yangtze River Dolphin (Baiji) were pretty much finished as a species when the Three Gorges Dam was constructed.

Time is running out on the Yangtze Finless Dolphin as well.

This whole thread just furthers my belief that human beings are the worst. The saddening part is that I will likely be alive to witness thousands more animal extinctions, including the polar bear and most rhinos/tigers.

:\

Witnessing the Last Days of Blue Fin Tuna at the Tokyo Fish Market:
The species is doomed, and so is the world’s largest place to sell it

The Japanese know the score; they will suffer first and suffer most when tuna is gone. Japan without kuromaguro will be like Yankee games without hot dogs, the Fourth of July without burgers, birthdays without cakes. Still, they refuse to cut their intake to save face or fish or the future, claiming their consumption is no more foolish than America building nuclear power plants on fault lines or feeding antibiotics to livestock.

There are thousands of extinctions every year and probably even more we'll never know about because we never discovered them before they were killed off.

British wolves.

Saber tooth tigers, Cave lions, American lions, European Lions, American Cheetah/Giant Cheetah, Machairodus kabir, Pleistocene tiger.

Titanoboa

Megaladon

Deinosuchus (giant dinosaur eating crocodiles, used to fuck up t rexes n shit)

Short-faced Bear

Big mammals in general, I would love to go back to when they were rampant and die of awe.
