Sailor Moon, also, how far did you manage to watch the series?

I watched the series up to where they left off on the old USA Channel, and caught a slew of random episodes because my best friend had Cartoon Network and I did not for most of my childhood. I remember catching a lot of the arc that had the Lesbian Duo, and even then, it their interactions as "cousins" was extraordinarily off-putting and awkward. Even children could find that there was something entirely missing about the context of their relationship.

In other words, I watched enough to not know who in the fuck the two dark-haired girls and the blue-haired girl are in the top-left of the poster.

But man, Sailor Moon was such a guilty pleasure; boys were ridiculed for watching it back in grade school, but I only found out in my late-teens that the same nay-sayers watched the show too.

Sailor Jupiter is still the best one.

I should comment that it's not like they were making out, they were just overly affectionate to one another. Hand-holding and being close like that, the dub cleaned up some stuff so they seemed JUUUUSSSTTTT on the safe side if memory serves me right. But yeah, if anyone had good EDIT-radar they knew something was wrong there and that it was a chop job.

EDIT:
Cartoon Network had no specific editing policy with regard to gay characters, but that "overt sexuality or implied sexuality of any kind are not allowed"

THIS. I watched for the demons and shit, I was like "lalallallallallalalla CAN YOU GET TO THE FIGHTING?" back then.

Love Sailor Moon. Watched a lot of it when I was younger. I'm tempted to watch through it all the way through some time soon.

Got made fun of, didn't give a fuck.

Funnily enough, I was at a new year's party last saturday, and Sailor Moon came up. EVERYONE at the party watched it when they were in school. I laughed my ass off.

One thing I remember back then (besides that they did this right before a new show debuted about catching small fighting monsters with balls) is that the dubbing varied so much character to character, and I remember back then a lot of people HATED Serena's valleygirl voice in the US dub. But as time went on the whiny tone of her voice was toned down alot, good VAs learn and adapt their voice over time. I've always wanted to be a VA as a kid, and it's the subtle things you pick up when listening to other VAs work.

Look at Ash's voice in Pokemon and listed to him the first 5-6 eps of the show. Ash actually had a deeper voice with not much scratchiness to it, totally different after that.

We should all sing the theme song because Im sure Im not the only one who had it drilled into their heads in elementary. Ill go first:

FIGHTING EVIL BY MOONLIGHT

I watched every episode. I own all the original uncut DVDs that were released in NA.

Still would love a sequel or an HD remake based on the manga. Stars arc <3.

I still don't know how they managed to put nearly naked transexuals in leather, but hey, who am I to judged.

The Doom Tree and the Brother and Sister lover villains

I used to have that Flute or whatever melody stuck in my head
Wow just found out even THAT was changed.

Japanese flute song
US flute song

Wait, what? Either I missed that or didn't watch up to that.
Shikou kairo-wa shouto-sunzen
HEY NOW THIS IS A US THEME SONG NONE OF THAT HERE!

yeah Alan's Flute Song, US version is the one I am familiar with (though the one you posted a link to is a fan cover)

That song was engraved in my brain, nearly drove me mad

I think he is referring to the Sailor Starlights, the sailor soldiers that were introduced in the last season, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. They were women from another planet who were looking for Usagi so they pretended to be males (as in, actually change their body). Sailor Stars never made it outside of Japan.

You can see the transformation here.

OMG, Sailor Moon thread! The series that defined my childhood (ok, my career path... maybe). Thanks to Sailormoon I learned how "draw" (well, better than someone my age) and I recorded most of the series on VHS. Sailor Moon S was pretty flawless tbh, specially for introducing HBIC Sailor Saturn! I try to pretend that SuperS did not exist and I think the Live-Action is better than the anime, surprisingly.

I, too, love Magic Knight Rayearth and The OVAs disturbed me a little.

The entire orientation week of my Freshman year of college involved a bunch of us piling into one of the dorm TV rooms and watching hours and hours of the DiC dub of Sailormoon on videotape.

Over the course of that year, we watched the entire series, up to and including fansubs of Stars.

Then we started watching the musicals, which were their own form of awesome.

I've only seen the first few episodes of the live action series. I keep meaning to get around to watching more, but on some level I keep hoping somebody will launch a US revival of the show and just release it.

Probably all of it, just can't remember because I was too young.

It's been such a long time that a lot of my memories of the show have blurred together. I really should rewatch the show.

I do remember that Ami is the best.

uh wtf? It's film so it has plenty enough resolution for HD.

I meant that I would expect them to blur the picture until the film grain goes away (which would be sub-DVD picture quality) and then use artificial sharpening filters to disguise the blurring.

Wow... cousins?! Isn't that even worse? XD
In the English dub they changed Fish Eye from a cross-dressing man to a regular woman. Which meant that they had to cut "her" topless scene in America.

YTV in Canada didn't give a crap and showed her delicious flat chest on network TV.

This thread needs more sexy pics.

I've seen every episode except a few of Sailor Stars.

I'm really hoping that the current success of the Sailor Moon manga re-release in the US will inspire someone to release the entire anime series again in North America.

Also, Sailor Pluto FTW.

IIRC, Funimation said that they've been trying for years, and they'd even like to re-dub it to be authentic and uncensored, but the rights holders in Japan put the series on ice. It's not for sale. They won't even listen to an offer.

The manga rights were similarly unavailable before Kodansha USA was formed and managed to get them (Kodansha Japan is a part owner on the rights). It's no surprise that Sailor Moon is profitable. The manga's profit practically built Tokyopop.

It seems likely that the rights holders in Japan are just trying to control the worldwide release to try and maximize it's success.

Seiya > Mamoru

Anyway, I stopped watching somewhere during the second or third season because I was so pressed by the new English voice cast.

I've worked my way through the whole original series pretty recently, and I like all of it except the stuff with Chibiusa and her super annoying horse. The Dead Moon Circus is cool, though.

Is there a complete English fandub available for Sailor Stars? A quick look on YouTube finds some surprisingly decent ones, and the people I want to watch it with don't like Japanese :(

Used to watch it in the morning along with Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z (on australian tv, im not sure if they were airing at the same time but these are the shows I recall watching in the mornings). And sometimes Digimon. I hated Dragon Ball as a kid (I recall whinging about the never ending power ups or something) and loved this and Pokemon. This explains a great deal now that I think about it.

Also, Sailor Mars is the best.

Yeah the show is pretty standard fare, but I was a sucker for Sentai-esque style of anime, and I thought Sailor Moon was pretty fine for what it was.

I watched the original Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, and I think I dropped it mid way through S...

It's best to filter episodes from filler - it's a long watch.

I would probably watch the show again without the filler episodes.

Sailor moon does not hold a candle to MKR, but it's still decent.

I prefer the English dub, the Japanese voices are sooooooo irritating.

that's exactly what I did and what I would do. I would skip the filler...

Disliked Chibiusa mostly.

I watched the 3 movies, the live action version, and all the way up to S when I was younger. Don't think I could finish it now. Its story telling style probably doesn't hold up.

The DiC dub for the most part was great...

I started watching sailor moon around 1994, I think back then I started watching upto sailor moon S I think I stopped watching around the horse love arc, stopped watching cause I lost interest in it(formula got stale) plus I hate chibimoon, but the series still holds a special place in haato

I made it all the way through SuperS. Stars was just a mess. I don't know what was going on in Naoko Takeuchi's head when she did the manga for that. The anime of Stars was even worse despite simplification.

The anime was certainly a mess because of how much they changed...

I watched ALL of it, even SuperS (i really hate Chibiusa though) and specially Stars. The movies were great too but the one that is the superior is S: The movie.

Same. I guess I got burned on the boring SuperS (god I want to strangle Chibiusa).

I liked ChibiUsa when she wasn't being an obnoxious bitch. I think that happened like all of three times from SMR to SuperS.

I watched for the demons and shit, I was like "lalallallallallalalla CAN YOU GET TO THE FIGHTING?" back then.

HEY NOW THIS IS A US THEME SONG NONE OF THAT HERE!

Does Chibiusa know it's bestiality? It's like it's her Prince Celestio having a human form.

PGSM is the shit. I really like how they got a lot done in 51 Episodes. And were able to take the basic premise of Sailor Moon and tell an original story for the most part.
Every iteration of Sailor Moon tells a different story.

Seen every series, maybe not all episodes...and I want another Sailor Moon anime series. Maybe, one where SM can "fight" in a much more proper sense of the term (not only with the last hit, I mean )...but still, give me another series.

On YouTube, there's a pretty awesome fan series. It's so well done that I still I'm wondering how the fuck are they doing it. It's called Sailor Moon Sacrifice.

Every iteration of Sailor Moon tells a different story.

It's all usually based within the same premise and for one reason or another does something different to end at a pretty similar result.

And I honestly walked into PGSM expecting an Arc 1 play by play with some fluff to fill the episode count. I walked out 51 episodes later being glad it did it's own thing. I really loved the focus on the girls outside of fighting evil and saving the day to really expand on them as characters.

The Dark Mercury Saga is an excellent example of this. Fucking unexpected plot twist that blew my mind. And another reason I proudly play for Team Ami. None of the other girls could've pulled that off. And Minako's death. That whole thing was well executed story telling even though you know she wouldn't stay dead. But the fact they'd even do it was kind of shocking to me. Even though Sailor Moon is no stranger to dealing with mortality issues.

I guess what I'm saying here to anybody who hasn't watched PGSM who is a fan of the series to do that ASAP. Leave all you know about Sailor Moon at the door and look at it as a fresh experience. You'll appreciate it more.

Aired in Germany, Italy and Poland at the very least.

I think he means localised?

WHICH CONVENIENTLY BRINGS ME TO POST THIS AGAIN
