Today I headed into work as usual, 7 AM, after my long ass commute that forces me to wake up at 5 AM so I can get there on time. After last night's Yankee game, it was a bit tough to roll out of bed, to say the least.

Got there, the project manager calls me up at around 9-ish saying he needs to talk to me outside. I had coordinated the concrete pouring last week and figure he wanted more of that... the guy tells me that he needs me to come in later tonight at 7PM and work until 2 AM both today and tomorrow night to oversee the taking down of the giant scaffold we have outside to protect the public.

I bit my tongue but I was fucking livid. I can't be the only one that gets pushed around like this based on the fact that we really have no set hours. I put in 10 hours a day four days and then 7 hours on Friday 'cause we all hit the bar and have put in two saturdays in the passed month. This sucks. I'm not saying my salary is bad but shit you should get some sort of bonus or something.

I'm gonna get him for this, one way or another. :lol

Yes. I wish I was salaried tho, itd be nice to be paid what im worth, even if I get screwed, the bills would still get paid and I would be happy for that. Most hourly jobs are shit and they treat you like shit.

Salaried people generally get taken advantage of by higher levels of management but have the option to take it out on those below them.

Still, sure would be nice to not live paycheck to paycheck. *sigh*

hehe.. i'm not an employee by any strectch of the imaginaition, but my father being in upper management and having salary... i often wonder what the fuck he does. 3 hour lunches, always at home working on garden projects during the weekdays...

must be nice!! btw, tiki barber sucks!!

Yeah, when I was a straight salary employee, I got the shaft more times than I can count; about the only thing that made up for it was that it was a fun job. Not so fun staying until 2am on a Friday for a date with Mr.Avid and not having my paycheck reflect that, but fun excluding that.

my mother, though, while being a salary employee, is always getting the shaft! she's second in charge of the governments "help desks' down here in SA, and last week, she fired some idiot at 5pm(his start time), so what does that mean? she had to fill in for his shift since she fired him. so, she worked from 8am to 5...then to 11pm.

:lol :lol

I'm salaried, but my company bills its clients by the hour for my services. So starting next January, I have to come to work for an extra half-hour a day, with no corresponding pay raise. I'm not as shafted as some others in this thread, but it's still annoying.

Salaried employees also tend to get paid more. I can work a 12-15 hour day and still not make as much as a lot of salaried employees. It works both ways.

Lots of shaft potential in both.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I'm salaried but anytime I have to come in for weekend work(like this weekend we are moving to Active Directory) I get a day off during the week.

I went from hourly to salery and notice a big difference....I know how much I'm getting paid every payday. Plus paid holidays rocks.

My dad works about 80 hours a week but he's on salary so he sees no extra compensation on a weekly basis. He gets a bonus each year but it in no way makes up for all the extra time and effort he puts in.

Whomever your dad works for is beyond stupid. Working your personnel like slaves only serves to burn them out and decrease their productivity and work quality.

Yup -- salaried employees often have to suck it up and do the extraordinary as part of their "regular" job. With that being said...working hourly sucks far more.

I feel ya Wellie. I work about 60 a week. In better economic times I'd be seen as a motivated guy and a "company man", but with things the way they are I'm feeling like I have to work long hours just to keep my job. :(

THANKS 'W'!!!!

I did about 15 minutes of real work today (tech support) and I'm on a salary. Awesome!

*High five*
I'm at work right now.

Can't you just say "Nope, can't come in sorry, home commitments..."
Surely your boss can't actually MAKE you do it.

Getting up at 5AM to catch the bus and work is NOT COOL, CK... you're quite a tolerant person.

I mean getting up at 5AM sucks, period.

I am fighting, tooth & nail, to get full-time, salaried work right now. I'll take the extra abuse -- I just need the insurance benefits. Very badly.

Had to go in this afternoon as well. Fuck it, I am calling up human resources and letting them know what's going on. I'm a natural workaholic to begin with, and I work twice as hard as anyone else. Last week my immediate supervisor was on vacation and they had recently fired someone else so it fell onto my plate to handle 3 people's jobs at once, and I did. Now I have to do this as well.

If I have to quit I will, I'm way too talented to be bullied around by anyone. Sucks for them that they spent so much money educating me and all other new hires on training courses, business trips, orientations, and all that. Especially with me, who's been with the company for four years and I'm actually good friends with the HR guy since he recruited me straight out of high school. :lol

Teaching is kinda that way. On a salary, and they want you to do lots of after school stuff, but I don't. I'm getting paid for 8-3. I'm not coming in any other time unless I feel like it. I do the mandatory things like parent-teacher meetings and awards night, but otherwise, I've only gone to football games and a couple of plays. If I'm not being paid for it, why do I need to do it? If you're not getting paid for those Saturdays and extra hours, and it's not stated in your contract that you have specific work hours, then there's really nothing you can do. Another friend is in the same boat working for a hospital. He's had to work a number of weekends, and doesn't get any extra compensation. He only gets his meals covered for those days. What a joke. Then again, salaries are the best way to go b/c you are guaranteed that money, whereas hourly wage jobs tend to have fluctuating income. I much prefer having a salary. All the hourly pay jobs I've worked have sucked ass. PEACE.

Hmm, this thread fits perfectly with my situation. I was off today, but some shit went down with the fire alarm at my work. So now I'm here at work from 8pm-8am. WOOT!

GO HOURLY!

EDIT: Good thing I get paid to surf the net all night long, intermixed with rounds every 2 1/2hrs.
