So Samsung confirmed that they are making an "extended reality" headset to launch this year at their last event in partnership with Qualcomm and Google, and it appears they may call it Galaxy Glasses. While that may not be the final name that does suggest the headset will be thin and light.
It is Mixed-Reality of course which is the direction many new headsets are going in. However the Galaxy Ring being used to control and add precision to motion interaction is the same exact idea and implementation that Apple is using with their VR headset, and their rings.
Between Samsung and Apple having ways to control motion and no hints yet of any controllers, Quest 2's latest updates adding more hand control features, and Xrspaces mova headset shipping with only one controller going for a Kinect/Controller hybrid approach, along with some lesser known companies, it looks like half the VR market is moving in the direction of Kinect style "you are the controller" as the future of VR, while the other half is controllers, with some having some optional motion tracking.
Most likely Samsung and Apple (and Zucker?) saw the same statistics that many users interested or would be interested in VR, don't want controllers, and seem to be taking that bet to the casino.
Both headsets from both phone companies are to release this year, so it won't be long before we see if these motion-based headsets are going to be revolutionary or novelty waggle take 4.0.
I do think Samsung may have a better chance, they aim for affordability, and as the article says it will have smartphone compatibility.
Most likely in my view, Samsung will be doing more than just Standalone and PC connectivity, but mobile connectivity too with high end phones. Which I think will give them an advantage over other players since MobileVR has been pretty much dead for years.
I believe this based not just on the article, but the fact Samsung was in VR before, they were the market leader with their various versions of Gear VR which used smartphones as the source of the VR experience. Likely they are coming back to do that as well as PC and being standalone. Gear VR is still a popular brand and has made many people interested in Samsung's return to VR, according to the morning consult data, despite not having a new headset in years.
Of course, we will need to see what the price will be.
After dedicating part of the last Unpacked event to talking about virtual reality (VR) and augmented (AR) devices, Samsung registered the probable commercial name of its headset. Called Galaxy Glasses, the product still gained some initial details in the documentation.
After all, the brand described its new product as a “headset for a virtual reality experience”, and an “headset for an augmented reality experience”. Therefore, this should confirm that the Galaxy Glasses will be extended reality (XR) devices, which is the name given to the combination of the two technologies.
The record even includes some device-related keywords, such as “smart glasses”, “smartphone” and “headphone”. They make references to likely smartphone capabilities and headphones, for example.
However, the records do not mention deeper details regarding the new product.
At the Galaxy Unpacked held on February 1st, Samsung stated that its headset will have a Qualcomm processor . In addition, it will run a special version of Android, designed for wearable devices.
Galaxy Ring is supposed to be Samsung's smart ring
In addition to the Galaxy Glasses, Samsung also registered the name Galaxy Ring. This is the brand's smart ring, which has already appeared in previous rumors.
In the documents, the accessory is defined as an “intelligent device to measure health and/or sleep indicators, in the shape of a ring”. Therefore, he must bring a formula similar to some already known representatives, such as the Oura Ring and the Iris Smart Ring .
However, the Galaxy Ring can still bring extra functionality, in conjunction with the Galaxy Glasses. It is expected that it can act as a way to control the headsets, serving as a pointer or with other forms of interaction.
A specific date for the launch of the new devices has not yet been announced, but they should appear in a few months. Until then, more technical details may appear through leaks.
