Samurai Legend Musashi thread =o

Why is he making a thread about an older game, you ask? Because I need clarification and satisfaction. I'm thinking people hate this game because the media hates it. Has anyone who has insulted it tried it? Here's IGN's wonderful review:

7.0 Presentation
A decent menu system and clear ways of getting around make navigating the rest of Musashi's world much easier.

In other words: no real reason why it's a 7.0

6.0 Graphics
The manga shading is a neat trick and some of the character designs hold up, but with a slow framerate and endlessly repeated areas those effects are diminished.

Slow framerate? I must be the only one who doesn't notice it. There was a lag once or twice for about a millisecond when jumping down from fairly high up in the town but that's about it. Most of it was the whole Zelda-like effects where Link does the dramatic slash thing.

6.0 Sound
A surf rock score that barely makes sense along with some decent to mediocre voiceover that's only good if you still love Saturday morning cartoons.

Yeah I have a feeling this guy didn't play the game. There was only one "surf rock" song in the whole game, and that was the opening. The rest of the music was great.

5.0 Gameplay
Slow movement and long drawn out gameplay with too much backtracking makes for a game that seems to barely move at all.

Yeah I don't recall a severe amount of backtracking. Fail again.

4.0 Lasting Appeal
There is a storyline to progress through, but the slow running back and forth is just for those who don't ahve anything better to do until the next game comes along.

I agree that it has no lasting appeal.

It retains some of the same feel, but it's not as upbeat. The day and night was removed, that should be the only decent sized complaint from fans of the previous game. One of the best things is that you get to keep the enemy skills you learn. A lot of people took the game back because they didn't understand how to learn the skills. :lol It's so insanely easy that it's just funny they complain about it. The music doesn't really compare, Brave Fencer Musashi had better music. But either way this game is good stand alone. I reccomend you try it, rent or buy, whatever. It's cheap now anyway.

I thought it was a fun game. Wasn't mindblowing by any stretch but a solid 7/10 game. It got a bad rap which I think was undeserved.

I think it may have something to do with the terrible OPM demo

Reviewing a game with a Masashi Hamauzu soundtrack without even mentioning his work should be a crime

I'm a big fan of the original, but this game was a huge disappointment to me. Most of the charm is gone, plain and simple. The voice acting/script of the first one played a huge part in making it such a great game. I usually don't complain about voice acting, but I thought it was terrible in Samurai Legend.

Most of the skills were pretty much the same thing, and you mostly had to rely on your 5 hit "combo" for the whole game. Rescuing people was so unsattisfying, they didn't teach you any new moves, they didn't make armor for you, all they did was open up some generic ass store. The whole game was just tedious.

You can tell the original team had nothing to do with this game, because prettymuch nothing that was fun carried over. I'd give this game a 5/10 at best.

Good example of being just a fanboy of the original. Especially since you actually referred to BFM's voice acting as something GOOD. :lol

Oh and you might want to compare teams. A good amount of the people from the old team did in fact make this game.

Sorry for implying that the voice acting was good, it wasn't. But it came off as purposely obnoxious, and that made it a lot of fun to me.

I was hoping for a good sequel and expecting this game to at least be decent, but I don't feel like I even got that. If it was most of the same team that worked on this, then I guess they were going for something completely different, or whatever they were going for didn't turn out too well...

The game was absolutely awful -- the camera was terrible, the gameplay was ridiciulously repetitive.. it really had nothing going for it.

Well yeah the camera is terrible if you don't play many action games. Also all games (Except maybe Wario Ware) are repetitive so I don't see where you're going with that.

c'mon, man.

I gave it 1.5 stars; one star for the guts it took to make characters with hands that big and half a star because it didn't crash. Ultra-padded out sequences of just two types of dopey enemies, and then the boss battles were just even worse. And where do you get off calling something a lock-on targeting system when every single enemy can break it?

I played this the same week I played Y's for PS2. Honestly I don't get why people think Y's is so great but hated on this, they were both average game experiences .
Y's was even shorter and has terrible voice acting and presentation.
Neither was a great action RPG, unfortunately we don't seem to be getting many of the genre these days so we have to live with what we get. I don't know why companies don't care anymore when it is such a great form of gameplay. Nintendo seems to be the only company who takes it seriously with its Zelda franchise. SAd but true.

music is ok, but nothing more.

Well yeah it's slow after you play something like Devil May Cry 3. And I guess I'll repeat myself: the camera "systemn" sucks if you suck at action games.

Uhh.. right? Good reply there, skippy. Just what we needed. "music is okay" wow. Amaaaazing! :lol

Why didn't you just say you didn't like the game in the first place? You did a nice job at trying to have solid reasons. "It's boring to me." would have worked better. Next time just reply with short things like that so you don't look like a retard. :D

Is it as bad an ARPG as Kingdom HEarts? Because that was pretty farkin bad. I honestly don't think square can make ARPGs at all anymore.

No one makes great ARPGs anymore. Its a lot art really. Castlevania:SotN was the pinacle of that style and it was 2D. Alundra was great too. The worst thing is, its always the same problems with these games, poor combat engines. They're either cheap or exploitable. Developers need to take a clue from something like God of War, Ninja Gaiden, DMC, and other major action games for an idea as to what gamers expect for actual gameplay nowadays. We want polished, slick controls where we feel in control.

I remember buying the PSone game just for the demo of FFVIII. the irony is that I enjoyed more Brave Fencer Musashi than I ever did FFVIII.

That's definitely true, I can't think of a recent console ARPG that really is any good. Maybe Zelda WW, but far too easy, unfortunately. Zelda Minish Cap on GBA was wonderful though.

I suppose Sony's Champions of Norrath games count, I liked those, but those are Diablo-style grindfests, not Zelda/Alundra style affairs.

Just popped this in to cleanse the taste of ICO out of my mouth

It's not helping.

Ok I lied, but it's better. Musashi sounds like a dweeb. YO WHISKER DUDE

YO WHISKER DUDE!

ok demi stop, this game is not better than ico. it's pretty bad.

I rented this game from GameFly.

It was a good game, heck, even the music is good.

Its not a great game by any stretch as others have said...but its not a bad game either.

I'd buy it for cheap...at least when I get a new job.

You need to credit Masashi Hamauzu as principal composer, e.g.

I rented this game from GameFly. Masashi Hamauzu composed most of its music.

It was a good game, with an excellent soundtrack mostly by Masashi Hamauzu, heck, even Masashi Hamauzu's excellent music was good.

Its not a great game by any stretch of the imagination, although the soundtrack, which is mostly by Masashi Hamauzu, is excellent, but it's not a bad game either, and Masashi Hamauzu's music definitely isn't bad.

I'd buy it for cheap, and I'd pay lots of money for the soundtrack (which contains music by Masashi Hamauzu)... at least when I get a new job. Also, I really liked Masashi Hamauzu's music for this game

Man I'm stuck

Where do I start in Roquefort Mine when looking for the Sword of Water :(

edit oh nvm stupid me lol

I just finished it

LOL @ "final" fight after all that I went through

That was so stupid, right next to the "final" fight in Final Fantasy 7

Then when you beat it it basically says "congraturation!!!" :lol

I don't suppose anyone knows where one could download the Gainax animated intro to this game, do they?

Probably the best thing about it, and I can't seem to rip it off the disc itself...
