SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom set a goal on Thursday of providing free wireless Internet activity in his city that sees itself as a vanguard of the Internet revolution.

"We will not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless Internet service," he said in his annual state of the city address. "These technologies will connect our residents to the skills and the jobs of the new economy."

"No San Franciscan should be without a computer and a broadband connection."

Wow! I'd love to be able to go to San Francisco with a DS and find other players and chat or play against them - same with a laptop computer. Good thing I live near SF. :D

This is probably a very good idea. Its likely how it should be in most civilized areas in the future. Certainly has that 21st century vibe to it....interent anywhere anytime, sans wires.

First tragedy, then farce.
Austin just signed a deal with Verizon to put WiFi citywide, but its gonna cost an arm and a leg :( I also think its running off of a 3g network.. no idea how fast it will be, because my cell phones net access is crappy.

Thank God most of the places I go allready have free WiFi.

Isn't that kind of stupid? Why would anyone pay for internet access if there is a government funded access point outside your door?

this does seem to be the problem with the otherwise brilliant scheme

still there's no reason why it couldn't happen.

Wow, that sounds really cool. I hope they do it, someone needs to. And if it's government-sponsored, then fine. I bet any "internet tax" would be lower than the obscene $40+ per month rates currently being charged by ISPs. If Miami proposed an idea like this, I'd vote for it. PEACE.

actually i guess the biggest problem with this is that it's basically transfer payments to rich people, since the fact remains that most people can't afford a computer much less a portable, wifi capable one.
