Saudi Athlete to Withdraw If Not Allowed to Wear Hijab.

Fencing and football is very different from Judo.

Like I said it's up to the IOC...she trained and competed with it on in the past.

Rules are rules, deal with it etc etc, however the Sports Hijab Chi linked:

OK, they have "sport hijabs." I have seen them in taekwondo competition before.

I mean, it seems like there should be some way they can work that out with her. Maybe not with it being Judo and all, but Judo is probably one of the few events where a Hijab like that wouldn't work. Really sucks for her.

Just let her compete. It's her choice to continue while knowing the danger. No reason to make rulings specifically for hijabs. It's more dangerous to let her go in to a match wholly outclassed by her opponent than because of her hajib.

Like I said it's up to the IOC...she trained and competed with it on in the past.

Actually, this is her first international competition, and she has no documented competition history.

Which is really shitty for Saudi to throw her out there like that.

The rules are there for everyone to abide by, if she doesn't like it then she has to withdraw. No special attention for anyone in the games no matter what religion they follow.

Are you seriously trying to make the argument that she should be allowed to violate the clearly understood rules of her sport because of some religious custom she follows?

Just trying to understand if you have a valid point to make as it relates to this story (which is black and white) vs. just the concept of wearing a hijab in general.
No, if that's the rules, yea withdraw. After Chitown posted that picture though, it doesn't seem like that big a deal really.

The sports hijab has been worn in other competitions in this Olympics...for example by Ibtihaj Muhammad of the USA who's a fencer and then there is the womens Iranian football team...

The IOC needs to decide at the end of the day but as far as muslim women atheletes they all travelled with the intention of wearing a hijab...

Fencing and Tae are NOT the same contact sport as Judo or wrestling.

plus Judo has a long tradition too , and a Judoka needs to respect it.

I mean you wear the hijab to show modesty, I dont see how taking it off for a honest practice or a certain sport is suddenly immodest... Its time to upgrade.

Taekwondo is not Judo and a removable hood like the one in ChiTown's picture would only end up getting her seriously injured.

Well I hope this is what she wants. Would be nice to hear from her. If she doesn't feel like complying with the clearly stated rules, goodbye.

Like I said it's up to the IOC...she trained and competed with it on in the past.

The entire time she trained and competed outside of the Olympics she and her father knew about the Olympic rules.

Yeah from what I've read she hasn't had the best preparation and training. She's definitely turning up just to represent ala Eric Moussambani.

Trained and competed where? Link?

She hasn't competed internationally because of restrictions from the saudi government...al arabiya showed grainy clips of her 2 weeks ago in training...

So, what terrible fate would she meet again if she didn't wear a hijab?

Could someone enlighten me on the dangers women face in such a situation (according to the beliefs and traditions of those that choose to wear it)

...I'd say withdraw...

Look up anything related to Saudi Arabia and "women's rights" over there.

Right. I kind of meant more like would she get struck down by a thunderbolt or something. I don't understand what they're covering their hair for - will it turn into snakes? Is her hair made of vaginas? I don't get it, it's just hair.

Precisely

Good on her. She should withdraw

Or take it off and compete if competing is important to her. They've clearly stated why they won't allow her to wear it. For her safety AND the safety of the people she's fighting. But I do agree, she should withdraw if following the stated rules is something she's unwilling to do.

I'd pull it of during the match if I was her opponent, she'd start crying and praying and I would win the match automatically.

Women spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on their hair...it's not just hair...hair is part of a womans beauty just as much as her face...

See how people got repulsed when Britney shaved her hair off or Keira Knightley even...

Long beautiful hair is associated with the female sexual image in the middle east. Same goes for the neck.

If thunderbolt is what Melissa calls her fist, then yes.

Olympics: You can wear it.
Judo Federation: You can't wear it.

Nice to see that there isn't a lack of communication between the two

It doesn't matter how arbitrary that shit is to us. To some people it's extremely serious and those are the types of people that would probably attack her physically for doing so by throwing acid on her or worse shit.

Edit: Just noticed the girl is 16. Isn't it super unfair for her to fight a 28 year old with much more experience?

You were saying?

Judo in itself is potentially a dangerous sport. Wouldn't an amicable option be to let these women decide whether or not the risk of wearing the hijab is worth it?

some ppl have their own religious principles and consider them to be very important. I salute her because she's sticking to it even against the lure of playing in the olympics and the world stage

I guess, my only issue is that she is a judo blue belt. And her first opponent is a multiple Pan-Am Games medalist. She's going to get crushed.

Just faceroll her in 5 seconds, then we can get this over with. Saudi Arabia should be banned from participating in the Olympics, plain and simple. Oppressive governments who treat half their population like shit are against Olympic spirit imo.

I hope she won't withdraw, the match will be hilarious to watch!

Shouldn't they be aware of regulations before sending people to compete? No headgear seems to be stated pretty clearly. This isn't a freedom of expression issue, its a sports regulation.

Wasn't Saudi Arabia threatened with being banned from the Olympics if they won't send a female athlete?

The official explanation goes somewhere along "men are tempted by women showing their hair". IMHO it is really a euphemism for "we cannot control men not to rape you on sight, so cover up!". Look up how female reporters were treated in Egypt recently, unnaturally suppressing sexual life leads to men being volatile and violent.

lure? that makes it sound like the olympics are something bad

IOC communications director Mark Adams said at a conference today that talks between Saudi Olympic officials and judo authorities were ongoing, and he believed a solution would be found.

So there's still a chance this gets resolved.

I did look up Wojdan Shaherkani though and she yet to participate in international competition. Why is she in the Olympics? The IOC wanted a woman from each nation so they allowed her to compete despite not even qualifying, let alone competing in a tournament.
