I thought you could save them as .jpg?

u save them in whatever format the pic is in

just use a image editing software to convert it

Is there a max size jpeg you can save?

Firefox + Download Them All! extension lets you save all the pics, movies, whatever on a page. Highly recommended.

I had the same problem. I found the radiohead gif I have now and saved it, to discover a few days later that it saved as a bmp (no more animation), so I tried to find it again and had great difficulty doing so. Thanks IE!
