Scariest Game?

Not really...HL2 had a level that was creepy, I found...though I didn't think it was scary. Runner up for HL2 would be the snow level in NOLF2...another atmospheric-but-not-scary level in an otherwise action FPS

sorry that I couldn't be more descriptive but my memory is hazy at the moment.

You guys are making me wish I bought Thief 3...that orphanage mission sounds nice

I'm gonna have to do a scary game marathon for Halloween. I'm psyched. :D

If I start on Friday I can get through all 4 Silent Hills and both Fatal Frames. :D :D

Thanks for inspiring me, dear little thread. :)

^^That kid disappearing and reappearing (with the question marks in place of an explanation) freaked the SHIT outta me. :lol

You will either finish and wish you hadn't ever decided to do it, or you'll be dead. Let us know how it goes for you.

Honestly, I thought RE1 was a BOO-ish scary game and personally thought that RE2 was a departure from it...like it was more of an action game...I honestly don't remember RE2, in any sense, as a scary game. I did, however, love RE2. Great game :b

RE3 was even more of an action game IMO, though the Nemesis did add some well appreciated tension...which I usually prefer over cheap BOO tactics...I say usually because I still prefered 2 over 3.

Code Veronica, IMO, wasn't even close to being a scary game...either from a BOO perspective or a provider of tension of actual fear...I personally thought CV was a failure in every sense except introducing us to a kickass metrosexual he/she villian.

REmake I though was sheer fucking brilliance. I loved the atmosphere and the tension that the crimson heads added, enjoyed the many thrills and jump-at-you scares that the game provided, and just about had a good damn time playing it.

RE:Zero, on the other hand, I couldn't stand playing from the very start...the game seemed like a cheap last-second attempt to cash in on the heels of REmake and I found it to be particularly lifeless...I stopped playing this game early...something about an uninspired enemy...or two...or three...or...fuck...the game bored me to tears and I thought I had finally grown tired of the series (much like I did near the end of 3 and during most of CV)

Then RE4 came out and kicked my ass into the proper way of thinking...I wasn't the only one that had grown tired of the same format...and I personally love the new direction the series is taking...here's hoping RE5 will actually be scary though (sorry, RE4) :(

Yeah I told my wife and she's already pretty not crazy about this idea.

I've handled the Silent Hills individually before. I'm looking forward to some seriously permanent mindfucking from playing them all back to back. If there are any new serial killers in Colorado over the next couple of weeks...well....shhhhhhh.

It's the Fatal Frames that will do me in. I cannot handle those fucking games.

The whole scene with Lisa Trevor from Resident Evil Remake freaked me out. Running through the scary forest, discovering the creepy cabin, and then facing Lisa.... insane! :D

As an eleven year old: Alone in the Dark. Polygons, effective camera angels, lovecraftian psychology....

Best game played in the dark: Silent Hill 1. The damn teddy bear... and the lady in the wheel chair... and the off course you beat the game and there are damn cg outtakes...

System Shock 1 was terrifying at the time, mostly because of SHODAN.

On consoles... Fatal Frame 2... EASILY. Holy shit, those games can be intense.

Can't wait for 3!!

Oh, yeah, Undying is great too...

Also, I literally ran away from an arcade cabinet of Bezerk when I was like 4. :lol

Oh man, shame on me for forgetting Alone in the Dark. One of the best psychological lovecraftian games, and at the time, nothing else like it. Couldn't dig the later ones, and the creator left that dev team quite some time ago iirc

Silent Hill is the scariest game ever. It's the only game to date that I've played that I actually hated to play simply because of the atmosphere. At times I have to turn of the sound which makes it way easier to play. Seriously, there is just a room in the game that just plays the sound of glass breaking. That's it.

Okay, so I've decided I'm pretty serious about this horror game marathon thing. I might even keep logs of my epic adventure and put them up in a thread or something if anybody would be interested in reading it.

Here's the game list currently, in the order I intend to play them:

Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4 (never beaten it, got bored)
Fatal Frame (never beaten it, chickened out)
Fatal Frame 2 (never beaten it, chickened out)
REmake (never beaten it, chicken)
RE4 if I have time (never beaten it, got distracted) - dunno if I would qualify this as a horror game though...hmmm....

I'm looking through this thread and there are some great, scary games in here, but I'm looking for games that are going to make me go OMG AHHHHHH rather than "Wow, times have changed" or "Graphics really do make all the difference." If there are any others you think really hold up that need to go in the playlist, speak up.

Oh and a note to Silent Hill fanatics: I know many of you consider SH1 to be the scariest and best game in the series. I HAD originally intended to include it, but I went rooting through my PS1 games just now and remembered I sold it last year. =( I doubt I can come up with a mint condition copy in time.

1. Fatal Frame 1

2. Silent Hill 1
3. Fatal Frame 2
4. Resident Evil 1(PS1)
5. Silent Hill 3

Nothing has come close to FF1 for me. The problem with Fatal Frame 2, is that it is a much better gameplay experience compared to FF1, but it lost some of the scariness with that improvement.

At least I'm not the only one that thinks that poor gameplay is scary :b

FWIW, either Manhunt or Clock Tower 3 probably had the most gruesome kills I've ever seen in a game.
Clock Tower 3? details!!

I can guess Manhunt...but giv details on that as well :D

Manhunt was another non-horror game that i thought had a good sense of atmosphere...though I think I was a little too manic with the game...gruesome kill PLUS bashing their brains out on the wall with a baseball bat while they're already dead just so I can count the random number of brainchunks that came out....fun times but ultimately bored me of the game quickly

I really liked the music in the game

Silent Hill - the dark hospital section is the only part of a game that has ever genuinely freaked me out (and I don't scare easily at all.) The whole last level is pretty creepy too, also I got the bad ending the first time, and I didn't know there were multiple endings. I remember being like.....what......that can't be it?!?. Never played 2, so I can't really comment on that, and 4 isn't doing much for me comparitively.

Parasite Eve wasn't really scary, but it had some pretty freaky charecter desighns and it was pretty messed up for its time (the stupid rat-boss thing kinda freaked me out.)

Blue Stinger was scary for all the wrong reasons "I just paid $30 for this!"

Last but not least is a kinda unconventional choice that wasn't really scary, but it took me aback when I got there. The part in Chrono Trigger where you whitness the "Day of Lavos". Up untill then, it was a fairly lighthearted RPG, and then you just kinda stumble onto this moniter that shows Lavos destroy the world. The first time I got there, I just sat there and thought.....okay, what was that about. It was evident something horrible had happened, but they really didn't give you any foreshadowing on what (like most JRPGs that tend to ruin plot twists hours before you get there.) I was pretty young too, so that probably played a large factor in why I totally didn't see that whole plot thread coming.)

Tangental, but those of you who enjoyed the core story of Parasite Eve 1 & 2 might enjoy the Book (or audio book, it's oddly creepy narrated) Blood Music, by Greg Bear

SH2, of course, with the original original Clock Tower in second.

Yeah, it's a SNES point and click adventure made of sprites.

It's just as scary as the PSX sequel (Clock Tower US).

Asshole. It's raining over here and what am I still doing up? Scary soundtrack, too. :(

I'll also vote for the REmake, but only if you started playing it not knowing about
the crimson heads.
Holy cow, I never got used to it.

the most fun is to not play for a couple months and come back not remembering which rooms have surprises waiting in them

Silent Hill 2 - the first survival horror game I ever played, and it scared the bejonkins out of me. I couldn't play more than 45 minutes or an hour at a time without getting freaked out. Great music, atmosphere, characters.. everything.

System Shock 2 ranks up near the top... awesome voice work, game design, flavor text.. and the monkeys. Eeeeee... those nasty monkeys.

Resident Evil Remake - the cabin, Lisa... whew. More great stuff.

I played Silent Hill 1, and it had some creepy moments... but urg, the graphics. I burst out laughing at the beginning with the diner scene... I know it was supposed to be terrifying but I just thought.. ahh!! attack of the pink blobby flying.. block.. things. It probably would have worked better for me as a novel to read with a tape player to play the sound effects at the appropriate moments. If I had played it before SH2 it probably would have affected me more.

Half Life 2 had some pretty scary parts - Raveholm was creepy. The beach area freaked me out even more, though - never in a game have I felt such desolation and isolation, and the impact of the Invasion hammered home.

I could play Silent Hill 2, but only during the day. That shit was scary.

But you know what game REALLY does my head in ? Doom 3. I can't do it. I got about 1/3rd through it, and thought fuck this.

You know what it is ? The flashlight/gun combo thing. That just fucks me up. I can either see shit running at me and I will freak out and just hit esc (usually followed by QUIT) or I can fuck around in the dark, and then suddenly some fucker with a chainsaw is on me.

Nope.

The RE games used to scare me. Once a I beat Zero, it wasn't much a problem anymore. I haven't gone back to REmake or started RE2 just because I'm not that bored I guess. RE4 had some intense moments though, but I'm not sure I'd say they were scary... The regenerators were pretty creepy though. And I wasn't expecting to face
tentacle dogs when I went back to where I first got on the boat after fighting Del Lago

The Cathedral level in Thief 1
The Cradle in Thief 3

Props on Operation Flashpoint, only game I can recall thinking ohh shit ohh shit wtf am I going to do.

The artic base in nolf2 is good as well, takes so long for anything to happen but once it does u crap yourself.

For jumps the damn mirror is Resident Evil 2

Has to be the original Silent Hill for me. I was a bit nervous around Nemesis at first but I got over it. Fatal Frame 1 also deserves a mention.

But you know what game REALLY does my head in ? Doom 3. I can't do it. I got about 1/3rd through it, and thought fuck this.
See, for me, the reason why Doom 3 failed so badly with its "fear factor" was simply due to the fact that they always made sure it was painfully obvious when danger was to appear. What made games like Silent Hill or System Shock 2 scary was simply the fear of impending danger, not the danger itself.

With Doom 3, virtually every enemy would literally APPEAR on the scene in a very loud fashion. If an imp was about to attack, you always knew this ahead of time. I would often find myself running up to "warping imps" and destroy them before they fully appeared in the world. I loved the game (seriously), but that aspect was extremely disappointing to me and killed any tension. What the hell was the point of the flashlight when most enemies LIT UP the surroundings when they first appeared?! The only enemies that could attack without revealing themselves before they can EVEN attack were the zombies...but they were all so terribly slow that it hardly worked. Even the soldier zombies, who can attack from a distance still have this stupid "radio chatter" sound effect assigned to their activation (so you'd hear this before they appeared on screen). Considering that the AI was simply designed to charge the player head on, you knew there would be an enemy on your ass the second any activation sound effect was played. It was possible for the game to make you jump from time to time with the monster closets, but that is not the type of fear I was hoping for.

Oh, and I want to comment on FEAR and its missed opportunity. They HAD something there, I swear they did. There was a 20 minute section that I found suprisingly intense. It involved enemies completely different from the rest of the game and that entire section brought back memories of System Shock 2. Why the HELL do they focus on those fucking soldiers the rest of the game?! Stupid stupid stupid!

OK, while I'm just discussing random games here...

I want to mention Fatal Frame in more detail. You'd never imagine it, but these games become CONSIDERABLY scarier on the easier difficulty settings (especially part 2). I initially started FF2 on the normal difficulty mode and found that I was not scared in the least. I played for a while assuming it would be like part 1 (which took an hour or two before it became truly terrifying). Well, when the game refused to deliver the scares I was looking for, it suddenly occured to me WHY I was feeling this way. The enemies were simply taking too much time to kill. Even if I were to nail the shots perfectly (and had powered up my camera), their life bars would drag on and on. The first 1/4 of each battle was by far the scariest segment, but during the course of battle, I became used to the image of the creature I was fighting and it no longer had any sort of impact on me. As I rolled into the final quarter of the fight, I was typically tired of fighting them and simply wanted to move on. It's not as if EVERY encounter was like this, but it happened far too often for its own good (and wasn't even particularly challenging). On the easier setting, the ghosts could be destroyed much faster. As a result, you rarely got a good look at them nor did you have time to become used to their appearance. I felt that THIS kept me on edge...especially as I moved further into the game.

I suppose this highlights a potential difference between what people find scary. The unknown scares me more than anything else, though in the case of games, I am required to be in a certain mindset for any of it to work on me. If I don't allow myself to "fall into" the game world, I won't get anything out of the experience. For those that have responded, do you think you could describe what it takes to "scare" you?

my first experiance with a intense game (i say intense cause i like those) would be Silent Hill 1 not only was i a virgin to the genre. But i was a virgin to that much intensity. It freaked me the fuck out. I would go nutz if shit was happening in the game.

My second experiance was with RE CV on ps2 it blew in comparison. So i waited, played some ww2 games and then Silent Hill 2 came out. It was everything i wanted and still is. I loved play the game with just the Nail board that thing rocked.

Fatal Frame and anything thats got a fucking chainsaw weilding crazy person(s) (ie Bella Sisters in RE4)

I've played a few other intense games that freaked me out but the names havent come to me.

Oh and i've never played System Shock. Why hasnt any game had freakin scary clowns? (i'm scared of them and my neighbor has a midget one in his front yard)

Fear of the unknown is always more terrifying. That's part of the reason SH1 was so damn horrific. Much of the game was simply audio and darkness (contrast with D3, which is darkness, no audio, and lots of flashy monster appearances).

Though I will say, Delta Labs in D3 was some fucked up freaky shit. Creepiest part in the game. That place looked like an abattoir, and made you go '#$$@% what happened here'

If done right, the game doesn't even need to rely on staples (taking place at night, always alone, sudden loud sounds) to really ratchet up the tension and keep you on edge. They can be used sparingly, but if the whole games atmosphere is dedicated to making your mind work at wondering what is going on (without ever answering the questions fully), and what the hell is around the next corner, you're in for a creepy, scary, goosebumpy ride

Though I will say, Delta Labs in D3 was some fucked up freaky shit.
Obviously, the names of the levels in Doom 3 make it difficult to recall what you are talking about...but I do remember one section that had me a bit on edge...

It's the area near the large computer that you must re-enable (all main power has been shut down and you need to restore it). This whole section was almost completely devoid of enemies, but the atmosphere was awesome. I really was hoping for more moments like that...

IIRC in delta labs,
it's after the first pink beastie, you walk across a bridge and come to an area flooded with red light and butchered bodies lying around with the standard "pick up an item (PDA) and set off enemy spawns like crazy"
but then I could be wrong, plenty of similar area names

i can easily say that i remember this
alone1.gif

as one of the scariest games i ever played. it really used to scare the shit out of me.

Fatal Frame/Zero

I've still yet to finish the first game because it scared the hell out of me while playing at night.

i`ll agree, project zero is the scariest game to date.

I completely agree with Alone in the Dark: that shit was terrifying when I was a kid.

I'm also going to add a new one to the thread that hasn't been mentioned. Maybe it wasn't scary to a lot of people or no one played it, but Ghost Vibration screwed me up bad if I played it at night. The rail system totally set you up for anything to happen, and the flashes of EVIL SOULS in your face during boss fights was hella freaky.

my girlfriend would tell you that it's eternal darkness (her all time favourite game ever!) but i suspect it has something to do with the time her and her niece were playing it together one night with the curtains closed and the lights on low to set the scene.. her mischeivous niece left the room during a really frightening bit 'to fetch a drink' but in reality snuck out the back door, around the side of the house and then banged as loudly as she could on the window of the front room where my girlfriend was still playing :)

I thought Siren's first few stages were pretty terrifying. Running from the cop with the gun, and then trying to start the car and going through all the steps, and the cop shooting in the windshield... the whole experience was pretty exhilirating.

And then came the rest of the game, and then it was all just tedious. Starting that car was tricky, though.

I was impreesed with the first Fatal Frame, not so much the second, though. The second was more running through the motions of the first, and the parts of the first that weren't as interesting. The first chapter of the original Fatal Frame was pretty creepy, especially since you weren't really sure what was going on. I thought it fell apart after that first chapter though, since it wasn't so much about what had happened that the character was concerned about, it was instead more "look how creepy it's babies but their heads are TURNED AROUND how do they do it, what's their secret?" and more crazy Japanese-style horror stuff.

It was pretty creepy walking through a hallway and seeing a spectral hanged-man, then it was gameplay time with "look a monster I think I'll take pictures of it in a combo right before it attacks me" creepy once there were more spooky ghosts flying around that had to be slain.

For me It was :

RE1
Silent Hill 1
Silent Hill 2
Doom's all of them
Half life 1 & 2

Will hunt down Fatal Frame games to try, I have system shock 2 but my new pc has problems running It, even with the xp patch:( (game has control issues).

Normally I watch anything, but the Silent Hill with the blonde chick (2 or 3?) was too creepy for me. I had to give up playing it. That mall type place with the screeching, repetitive music. So oppressive.

Britney's Dance Beat. I'm affraid to even touch the box!!! :lol

Ok seriously, i remember Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill 1 and Mansion of Hidden Soul to be pretty scary.

the games that have made me " pause" and look around because I gots the creeps are:
fatal frame1 and fatal frame2
silent hill 1
re1

Fatal Frame II--can't even finish this. Refuse to play it at night. Especially refuse to use headphones while playing.

Silent Hill 2--another one I won't finish. Too disturbing, bizarre, and surreal. Like a nightmare on loop. I stopped after the creature on creature sex scene. Or whatever it was they were doing. *shudders*

Aliens Vs Predator 2--Marine scenario, the very beginning. Perfect atmosphere. The beep, beep of the tracker might as well be your heartbeat.

Doom--Old school sprites were never more terrifying. This particular fellow:
cyberdemon.gif

scared the fuck outta me.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts--This one scares me because of its sheer difficulty. :-(

I agree.
1)REremake (for me) is by far the scariest game I ever played. (and this was my first RE) RE4 wasn't scary, imo.
2.)Metroid Prime 2 (has a much darker atmosphere than many horror-games)

hell yeah. I tend to forget that Doom was scary at first. I also feared those mechanical spiders. As soon as i would hear their sound i was like "omg where are they!?"
