Scariest Game?

Playing them out of order was definitely your problem, I think. I wholeheartedly agree that FF1 is fucking scary and FF2 is ridiculously fucking scary.

I can't even imagine them making more of an improvement in 3, at least as far as scares go. I'm waiting till the Xbox version, though. FF1/FF2 are much improved on the Xbox; I had to cast aside my PS2 versions when they were released. It'll be worth the wait, methinks.
I wonder what the chances are of FF3 showing up on Xbox? Xbox will be tossed out with the bathwater after this November, and as far as I can tell there are next to no commercial releases scheduled for after January 06... It'd be nice if they took a chance on it, though.

Out of all the scary moments I've witnessed in videogames, Operation Flashpoint had almost gave me a heart attack once.
I just bought it and a friend came over so we could take turns playing the game, further through the game we had to gun down Russian soldiers in some deserted village, my friend grabbed an RPK and started shooting. When he saw one soldier drop to the ground he ran towards him and asked me: 'Is he dead? Is he dead?!'

Before I could say anything the fucker made a 180 on his stomach and shot my friend in the face...I still have nightmares about it

REmake gets my vote. Awesome stuff in that game. Remember running into the Crimsons for the first time? OMWTF?!! AAAAH! :lol

I think IGN pretty much covers how I feel about it:

"The prettiest, most atmospheric and all-around scariest game we've ever played."

Alone in the Dark: TNN had plenty of 'cheap' scares and even through the game wasn't spectacular I do think the light/shade worked really well I look forward to the next installment.

Operation Flashpoint sounds awesome. I remember my PC kinda struggling with it ages ago, but now that I can play it perfectly...

The Cathedral level in Thief 1
Yes. Yes. Yes.

Thief was sooo much scarier than System Shock ever wound up being, and I don't even know how intentional it was. Granted, the beginning of Thief isn't that frightening, and I stopped playing the game time and time again when I got to Assassins, but pretty much everything after that is both amazing and scary as all hell.

Especially when you make your way to the cathedral.

Good point...I didn't even think about that. =/ I'll hold off a few months anyway just in case.

As mentioned, this thread should have ended when System Shock 2 was mentioned. That game scared the crap out of me through the whole game, it never let up.

I really wish people would quit the whole "thread should have ended" bit.

I think System Shock 2 had a bigger impact on me because I didn't know it was supposed to be a horror game going into it! I thought, hey, lookee here, a new sci-fi shooter (having never played the first one), so I picked it up. Then I spent the next decade of my life wondering what the fuck I was thinking! Running zombies with wrenches, psychotic monkeys, the game had it all. Definitely gets my #1 vote.

As for the others, yeah the Silent Hills were pretty freaky. I remember in SH1 right when you get in the school one of the first doors you go into is the girl's bathroom, and when you get to the back by the end stalls suddenly you hear a little girl crying VERY FUCKING LOUDLY. I had to change my pantaloons after that one. The game is very oppressive (the fog was a brilliant idea) and I hope the movie isn't screwed up too bad.

The most scary part I remember from Undying occurs very early in the game. When you are able to see the paintings in the house for what they really are... ugh, freaky!

The first game to REALLY scare me was Metroid on the NES. As a previous poster said, weird corridors and weird music, and it was hard! But the worst part was Ridley's lair... the music there is insanely brilliant (and superbly remixed in Super Smash Bros!), and I remember I couldn't stand being around when my father played through those parts. It was just so... alien!
