What is the function of school spirit in High School?

After investigating more social psychology, I came to consider school spirit while evaluating the social groups of my past. What is its function, and how does it pertain to academia? Why are we promoting certain groups like cheerleaders or sports players while neglecting others, thus building the foundations of a social caste? Is the "benefit" of school spirit (ie. school sports assemblies) worth the cost of segregation among the student body? Why are we encouraging a group mentality instead of individual achievement, moderation, and tolerance?

I was never really able to fathom the worth or necessity of school spirit. I also don't know what the phrase "society if broken" has to do with your question, besides its obvious submission as an answer.
