Schools required to give access / names to military under "No Child Left Behind"

Because we don't have enough political threads...

Apparently this is old news, but I just heard it on the radio in a story regarding parents complaining here in WA.

...buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student -- or face a cutoff of all federal aid.

Has this been in the news? I just can't believe this shit...

How did military recruiters get names before?

I believe it.

I remember being harassed while visiting a mall in Seattle, Northgate or something, by an Army recruiter. When I told him I was 1) Canadian and 2) had no interest in getting shot while some politician's kids got out scot-free, he refused to believe me and followed me all the way into the parking lot.

I got called by the Marines once. I told them I'm on an anti-depressant. He left me alone shortly thereafter.

*edit*
And I'll be DAMNED if I'm going over to Iraq to die for Mr. Bush's desires...

I remember the military came to my school (via helicopter) in hippy-infested Eugene and was giving some kind of presentation in the library.

In the middle of it, two students ran in, one in fatigues with a toy gun chasing down the other. The guy with the gun "shot" the other in front of the army's display-table and he collapsed on top of their brochures, smearing "blood" over everything.

Both were suspended, but enough parents complained about the army being there in the first place that they didn't come back for at least two years.

There is no draft coming, especially the nonsense of Bush getting it going 2-3 days after the election. Conscript forces are poor in fighting and morale, it would be a waste.[/url]

But needed if Bush's solution to terrorism continues to be heavy on the military conflict.

A draft is coming either way.

I think this is very true. I don't think Bush can get out of it without changing his policy drastically, and has adopted clever code-wording to get out of being called a liar-"We will retain a volunteer army"-there's lots of fudge room there. Kerry will probably find himself totally boxed in by inaguration day if he is elected, and will have a royal mess to clean up. I bet he'll try to balloon the number of enlisted men through increased pay and benefits before he goes draft. Bush would probably just do a draft and not call it a draft and dress it up as "mandatory service" that looks a lot like a draft.

They'll call it different terms, and they probably won't send people directly into combat/overseas at first (they'll call it "mandatory civil service"). That'll change over time, of course.

One thing is for sure-if there is another theater that requires significant armed forces that crops up, we get a draft no matter how you draw it. This is the scary thing-we're so overextended that we simply can't respond anymore without having to break into involuntary service.

I'm so glad I'm big and fat right now. No one wants me for the military =D.

They'll get you into shape, Private Pyle.

And unlike Mother Jones claims, its not buried, 20 seconds of searching brings up the needed information from the US department of education website.
How does that mean it wasn't buried in the bill? Do you think most parents are aware of this part of the bill, or would be happy to learn about it?

yea. it's a pretty well known that this was in NCLB, and it's nowhere near the worse thing about the law.

Conscript forces are poor in fighting and morale, it would be a waste.

Conscript forces won WW2. They kicked as much ass as they could in Vietnam and Korea. Believe it or not, drafted soldiers aren't necessarily second-string worthless troops. They can be trained and motivated-often not so much for the cause of the war as the band of brothers they serve with.

From Hackworth:

Rumsfeld, in fact, has already kicked off the anti-draft campaign by denigrating the draftees who fought in Vietnam. The SecDef, who prefers sycophants who don’t ask questions, recently stated that Vietnam-era draftees added “No value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services ... because ... it took an enormous amount of effort in terms of training, and then they were gone.”

Wrong once again. I led draftees for almost four years in Vietnam and for several years during the Korean War. If well-led, there are no finer soldiers. Ask the Nazis, the Japanese and the Reds in Korea and in Vietnam, where “no value” draftees cleaned their clocks in fight after fight.

Are you done pissing all over the people who fought and died for America, Ripclawe? Take that particularly terrible talking point and shove it.

That was then, I'm talking about now. Russia is the perfect example of how conscript forces are worse.. Plus the fact that to get a draft going, not only would the president have to approve it, but congress has to pass it. show of hands on thinking that will pass anytime soon.

I have nothing but admiration for the generations back then who fought in World War I and II. But that was different times, thinking and ideals that are mocked these days.

As for Hackworth on a totally different tangent, I hope he gets what he deserves for the part he played in Boorda suicide.

Being well-motivated is not the sole factor in creating a viable fighting force. Hell, look at the army today - the all-volunteer army is in fact considerably worse off in terms of having competent people in the force than the conscripted forces of the past.

They probably wouldn't want to spend the resources to get me down to their standard. =P

Oh they will, I'm living proof. (Well unless you're bigger than I was at 265 lbs before) :p x 2

BTW, just to illustrate the beauty of congressional bills and records... if you had taken notice of this, said WTF we need to take it out, and thus voted against the as-proposed bill, your record would say you voted against children.

People seem to think that bills are merely their one-line summary(*cough*dmca*cough*patriot act*cough*), but ANYTHING can be in a bill, even something completely unrelated to the original idea(eg. a measure to fund local arcades stuck in an environment bill).
