Schoolyard Video Game Myths

Think back to your school days, there was always some kid in the schoolyard spouting off bullshit about mythical cheat codes and non-existant game titles.

I can vividly remember such legends as...

- A blood/full fatality code for SNES Mortal Kombat

- Bison playable in SNES SFII

- A kid claiming to have played Zelda IV: A Link to the Future :lol

Anyone else recall some of these classic gems?

Oh and I also remember being told that "Megadrive (Genesis) has burst processing and Sega are using it to make Starfox for Megadrive without an FX chip!"

You must have had a few gamers in school that at least knew a little bit about games, then. I can guarantee you I was one of like............... three students (maybe) that had heard of the FX chip. Schuylkill County, PA is not a heavy gaming area. :lol

The only one I can recall right now is that there were one or two kids claiming that a version of GoldenEye was out for the PC.. I had to explain to them that Rare was partnered with Nintendo at the time and that wasn't possible/happening.. I believe the item in question was this trivia/informational James Bond "game" for the PC that came out around the time..

"you can ride Yoshi in SM64 if you go where he disappears to using the wing cap to get there" :lol I tried and I tried and I tried.

Is that you, Adam Savage and/or Jamie Hyneman? The only thing I could remember was a Super Mario Kart code that would... I don't even know what it was supposed to do, but that's all I could remember.

This isn't so much a myth really but just really wierd.

When I was in kindergarden, a classmate of mine was named "Justin Bailey".

Great topic. :)

I don't remember too many myths, but I can still vividly remember the heated arguments that the "Genesis is 16-bit it's better than Nintendo!!!" and "No way Genesis SUCKS Nintendo has Mario and more games it rules!!" followed by "Genesis does what NintenDON'T!!" to end it.

-There was this kid at a summer camp I went to as a kid that was easily the biggest liar I have ever met to this day. The kid would spit out the biggest loads of garbage about anything kids were into, telling us that if you got to the last level in the TMNT arcade game without dying once, Casey Jones and Usagi Yojimbo would come out and help you win.

-At another summer camp some years later (1992), a kid told me he played Street Fighter III at a movie theater, and described some of the characters in detail. The kid didn't know anything about SF2 (I think I must have been the only kid my age that could play it where I lived), and it turns out he wasn't lying...the theater really DID have a "Street Fighter III" machine. Someone made their own cheap-looking marquee for a cab and threw SF2' CE inside it. I don't know how the kid could have missed the SF2 title screen, though. :)

-Before the PS2 was released in the U.S., I was talking to an EB manager about the E3 show I was about to go to later that week. He feeds me a bunch of hyped-up crap about the PS2, and I tell him it's all bull, and I'll be glad to come back to the store with my Japanese PS2 and show him (I lived less than five minutes away) if he wanted. :D This was then met with more lies about how he saw the PS2 at an EB-only trade show and that the U.S. version was better than the Japanese version. Right.

The classic that used to float around in my day was the Mortal Kombat sex fatality rumors. There always used to be kids talking about the infamous fatality where Liu Kang has sex with Sonya and they have a mutant baby. When Mortal Kombat 3 came out, people wouldn't shut up about "sexalities" and other non-sensical "alities" you could do..........but only on certain arcade machines though, never the consoles, remember that? :lol

The other thing was people lying to me telling me that if you beat Sephiroth a certain way or did something else, after the game was over you could go back and do some new things. Seeing as how FFVII was the first rpg that ever made me kill a boss as many times as I did, I figured that had to be true. Ever since then I get pissed off by FF endings.

People claiming...

...that they killed the old man in Zelda 1.

...that Samus sans armor via the Justin Bailey code was really "his" sister.

...that King Hippo could be knocked out via nothing but mouth shots.

...they SWEAR that Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter was in production using the Sonic and Knuckles style of lock on tech.

...that Back to the Future 1 was a good game and that TMNT1 was beatable

Seriously?

in certain stages, with a good enough running start, yeah. It used to be fun to try to do it all the time.

of course, the annoying myth back in high school was that aeris could come back.

Not schoolyard spouting but there were people who claimed:

- Sonic was a playable character in Super Smahs Brothers Melee

Why do i see people calling the Genesis the Megadrive ? is that what it is in Japan? if it is...do these people actualy live in Japan? =/

I remember the Nimbus Terrafaux rumor being REALLY big around my school. There were kids who swore up and down that they had unlocked him.

I also remember starting my own Mortal Kombat myth just to see how fast it would get around school. My friend Matt and I started told three people in the morning that Lui Kang's "Friendship" was that he turned into Barney and hugged someone. Sure enough, by 3:00 that afternoon this 7th grader (I was a Sophmore or Junior -- can't remember) comes running up to me on the bus all excited about how he SAW someone at the local arcade use Lui Kang's "Friendship" and that he turned into Barney and hugged someone until their head popped off. :lol

Chrono Trigger also produced a number ofstories about different endings and completion paths. Of course, everyone told about a different ending, so everyone else wasn't telling the truth. It wasn't until someone played the game a second time that people realized there were multiple endings -- spawning even more rumors about different endings.

It was only the Genesis in North America; Mega Drive elsewhere.

This was because of a april fools joke, in EGM I believe.

Haha, the "alaty" thing was big where I came from too. I remember hearing about Nudealities, Animalaties (this was before MK3), and Mega-Fatalities.

And I know what you mean... the kid who claimed these things were true always had a disclaimer like "it worked on an arcade machine on my family vacation to Timbuktu" etc.

oh ok....i thought it was just what it was in Japan, and i know there is only a few people that post here that live in Japan ...but i know there is quite a lot of Europey peoples ...makes sence ! thanks :)

btw Genesis > Megadrive ! :P

No, SNES > Megadrive

What have I started!

If you jump over the flagpole in Super Mario Bros., Mario can wear roller skates which make him go faster and jump higher! (This is probably just something from my neighborhood)

Endless rumours/claims of various cheats to make various female characters in various games naked. We were a horny lot, I guess.

Well, I remember someone claiming that if you strapped a dime to the mortal kombat catridge (snes), it would recognize the weight of a (blood?) chip and the blood would reappear. :lol

Dude being able to play San Andreas with a PS2 emulator, just like if it was the PC version.

Didn't work out that way.

i remember people going on about a secret level in the amiga version of marble madness but i could never find it.

i thank EGM for the various myths around people playing as or against Sheng Long. FWIW, i actually believe the one guy i used to work with who said he did everything EGM wrote, but never got Sheng Long after playing with him a few times.

- It was said that there is a secret level in MASTER BLASTER for NES.

- Test mode in FFVIII. Later turned out to be true.

That the Sears Atari (Telegames) couldn't play all the games that the regular Atari 2600 could.

<looks at other posts>

Man, I feel old.

I was at a family Christmas party on the weekend and my cousin's 13 year old son was telling me that Microsoft was going to release an Xbox that can also play PS2 games.

It's amazing how that myth keeps coming back over and over again.

Target Renegade on the Amstrad CPC 464/Commodore 64 etc

Apparently each time you complete the game, a pixellated woman wearing a leather catsuit strips off a piece during the final sequence, gradually exposing her magnificent pink boobies. So, apparently, if you complete the game 10 times over in one sitting, you eventually get to see some minge.

MMmm. Renegade minge.

can't recall any back from my school days, but around right after last e3 some high school kid came into the gamestop i used to work at and told me katamari was coming to the 360. "it's true, i saw it on G4!"

and on an unrelated note, i had another kid in the arcade spot my FLCL t-shirt and proceed to tell me they had already released more FLCL episodes in japan. said he "saw it on the internet". when i decided to humor him and ask him why they hadnt been fansubbed, he just had a blank stare on his face.

the things you'll hear when working a gamestore though. just priceless

There was a running gag in a german gaming mag about unlocking a secret character in Street Fighter 2; Shen Long. People kept sending in cheatcodes like: "Tie the controller to a chair, flood the room and beat the game using Honda's kicks only etc etc etc" :>

I was usually the asshole kid that started the rumors .... but the "you can kill the old man in Zelda" had me fooled. I must have tried for 2 hours.

My memory is hazy, but I think at some point Nintendo Power had to debunk it because they must have had alot of questions about it.
