it's amazing how poorly they mismanaged Hogwarts Legacy, I mean it was a huge hit but they could have easily made more money by having planned for this stuff in advance

Didn't realize they were working on DLC, I just assumed they'd moved on to the sequel.

All I ask from the sequel is more enemy variety, it was so dumb that every single village I went to got over run by spiders at some stage of the game.

yeah sure.
Makes no sense for definitive edition.
The game is still new and it's amazing. One of my fav games this gen. Looks incredible, plays very relaxed. just the right length (considering not doing all side stuff of course).

It's a good choice. focus on next game

This is a terrible decision, put the Definitive Edition with the DLC included at full price and the DLC available for existing owners to purchase for $30.

This would have printed money.

Off topic, i don't know why but everytime i see Schreier face i want to punch it.
Good news then, it's totally normal as his face is like the Turing test but for human!

Exec: "Hey -- what's that one game we did that made money?"
Subordinate: "Um, I don't know ... OH ... Hogwarts Legacy?"
Exec: "Yeah, that! That one! That really brought in some cash for us. Go ahead and cancel any more content for it."

Holy shit WB has to be one of the most retarded publishers in the business.

Absolute clown show.
Their big mistake was when they stopped licensing out their properties to other companies and made everything internal. I get the appeal of earning more money with internally ran projects, but they clearly underestimated the large commitment of time and investment that game development takes.

I can tell they are looking at EA and 2K with envy as they pump out sports games with major profit every 6-12 months.

On the one hand I think this is good, I'd rather have them focusing on the sequel than making DLC and updates for a 2 years old game.
On the other hand the next game will likely be some GAAS abomination because WB doesn't learn so who really cares?

At this point, they have to be WANTING to go bankrupt!

There's no way any company can make so many retarded decisions without there being some double agent trying to kill the company from inside...but to be fair modern CEOs have the brain capacity of a 1 year old so I might be giving them too much credit with that theory.

I would have bought a decently made definitive edition for full price. That would make it the only game in the last 10 years of personal gaming that I've ever bought 3 times.

WB doesn't like money, apparently.

Maybe I'm misremembering or confusing it for another game. Didn't they initially say "no DLC plans" before finally saying "ok, now there's DLC plans"? Maybe it was all rumors and "leaks"?

They didn't initially but Bloomberg reported they saw plans for both with the expansion being exclusive to the Definitive Edition with graphical enhancements.

Ultimately it stinks of a 'do you want £250 million now or £1 billion in 3 years?' line of thinking.

Whole industry is obsessed with high risk, high reward instead of having diversity and cadence in their portfolio's

Deffo going to crash soon

DLC in general has always been a weird business model to me because I don't understand how it's profitable. I mean, it must make financial sense to do it, but when you look at the number of Steam reviews for a base game compared to its DLC, it's shockingly low.

E.g. Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 = 120,000 reviews. "A Woman's Lot" DLC has 3,000 reviews--the most of any of the KCD DLCs. The others are around 1,000 reviews--a few under 1K.

How does it work? Is it basically giving teams that they have on staff that can't contribute to the next full project something to do, and breaking even is good enough? Are they selling way more than they seem to be?

Incredible. They took one single IP/game capable of making them money while at same time keeping media attention and customer awareness… and went ahead to cancel further dev/DLC.

Bravo, WB management wins the stupidity award and with EA and Ubisoft around that takes true skill!

You get extra money out of existing players and can keep the title relevant and in the public's eye for longer.

Disappointing.

WB as a whole (not just gaming division) used to be amazing, I don't know what the fuck happened.
The AT& T merger was disastrous for them.

WB Games is canceling everything to make room for their planned Amanda Waller ARPG.

She's a kickass character and I'd buy that game day 1.

So, the game that PRINTED money for WB, was a global phenomenon for the better part of a year, and is set in a universe where DLC for it essentially writes itself… Won't be supported any further.

Incompetent is the kindest adjective for WB's stupidity that I can currently think of.

I agree. The IP is full of opportunities for DLC if done well. Lots of money to be made. Only thing is what the cost of obtaining the rights are.

Either way it's a bit disappointing.
