New interview with Jackson. Doesn't reveal much new but I love hearing about the "behind the scenes" stuff, so I found it pretty cool.

Also, describes a level where you have to cross some area with a cat and a dog, which of course fight each other, and you have to find a way to stop it. He talks about how people used traditional solutions (walls, etc.), then one guy used shrink ray on the dog and tossed him into a satchel, which surprised him
W00t at the 217 shout-out

I'll have to thank all the Scribblenauts guys at PAX!

I love how he kills medusa, grabs her head, and uses it to stun a centaur.

It's always "just localization".
But I'd imagine that translations for this game should be a minor issue since the text in need of translation is just a big list of words. Words are easy-peasy to translate. Just put the wordlist in some translation application. Then just go over it manually one time to check everything looks ok. It's not like translating an RPG with heaps of dialogue. There you have to go into grammar mode. And not just that. You have to check that the direct translations also sounds ok in the new language. And that's tricky and takes time. Scribblenauts, I'd assume, have very little text in need of this work flow. It's just the big word list.

Basically.

I've got a question for Jackson if he can answer it: will Scribblenauts be able to use the new WPA features of the DSi's "advanced" wireless settings? I hate having to keep a completely open access point so my stupid DS can connect to the Internet...

I'm fairly certain that the Wireless settings on the DS are independent from the game. The game simply uses whatever connection the DS (or DSi) gives it, so it shouldn't be a problem with any game. I don't have a DSi so I can't say for sure.

Edit: I've been corrected below. If that's the case, Scribblenauts will likely not use WPA.

Not the case--none of the pre-DSi games with WiFi access are WPA-compatible. It's possible Scribblenauts is, of course, but it's not automatic.

Right, I know that any DS games that were made before the DSi came out will not work with WPA, but I don't know if it's only DSi specific games that can make use of it, or if a normal DS game can be coded to work. Jackson?

I'll be very disappointed if that's not simply a sleeve over a dictionary.
Dictionaries have tons of words (including some objects that match the rules) that aren't in the game. :P I've gotten to the point where I think I've accepted that. So, now I'm looking forward to wearing my chicken hat and using shrink rays on stuff. I really liked that dog idea, even though now my brain has been corrupted with yet another solution!

Wait, wtf is the purpose of this ?

I must admit that I have toyed with the idea of doing a FAQ for Scribblenauts, but it would have to be in the spirit of the game. The only idea I could come up with that would not ruin the game or the exercise of the imagination would be to do the walkthrough using only verbs, leaving what nouns to use up to the player.

It might be an interesting exercise.

I don't think that's possible.

That's an excellent idea, but it doesn't actually fit the definition of "walkthrough."

Thanks, those are some kickass screenshots :D

Over the past few days I've been collecting screenshots and videos and making a photo gallery of anything that shows part of a level along with what level it is. So far I've identified about 52 of the 220 levels, not counting the "University" levels that I have a few pics of

Granted I don't actually know the goal of most of these levels, but it's cool to look at :D

Jeremiah: "You can do that? I guess you can. I mean, I created the game and I didn't know you could do that."

That's it. Game over. Scribblenauts has become self aware. Get to dah chopper. You cannot survive, make your time.

Use WEP, then.

I want the game to sell millions, but I don't want this guide to sell more than 10 copies. A game like this needs actual imagination and thought -- not a guide.

I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if the author spends little to no time playing the game. A lot of these guides are similar to "unofficial companions" about popular book/movie series by people just out to make a quick buck riding the coattails of popularity...and who usually have absolutely no idea about it besides what they glean on the internet or fabricate.

In a sense, the existence of this guide means there's an expectation the game will be very popular indeed. But you're right; everyone should stay away from this guide, no matter how good or bad it is.

Or, you know, people could play the games they buy however they want, with or without strategy guides or GameFAQs or whatever. ;p

I suppose there is the fear that millions of people could pirate the ROM, pirate the PDF of the game guide, solve all puzzles through the solutions that the guide suggests, and then post millions of negative reviews on message boards stating how easy the game is and how *insert shooter or sidescroller game here* has more challenge.

I hope that doesn't happen, but I am not sure if it is totally likely, thankfully.

This is a good question I'd really like to know the answer for.

If the answer is "YES, SCRIBBLENAUTS IS DSi ENHANCED to make use of WPA", it will be an absolute must buy for me.

"This is our big last hurrah for DS games," Slaczka said. "That's it for original stuff. We're now going to move on to consoles in the next year. We might still do DS; I'm not saying we're not going to [develop DS games]. But our focus is definitely going to be on console."

Huh? What? The hell?

Ok, he's not saying they're giving up on the DS, but still. I was taking comfort in the fact that there is one truly original developer out there that's focusing on my DS. And now they're "moving on"?

First you're giving up on Europe, and then the DS? You are making me sad, sad, sad, Jackson. :(

How are they giving up on Europe?

I'd love to see 5th Cell do digital distribution (WiiWare, XBLA, PSN). They'll have quite a lot more power to work with and can do a lot more without ballooning their budget.

By taking a month-long dump on the whole continent.

That I would too, actually.

Didn't Jackson already announce Lock's Quest for Wii?

Edit: Ok, he said they weren't working on a new Lock's Quest game.

We aren't working on any, at least :)

Planet Moon-developed Wii sequel confirmed.

And here's hoping DTL2 can be a return to form for them; Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed and Dangerous were amazing games.
it'll be confirmed tomorrow anyway :)

Sounds like a good decision to me. You couldn't top Scribblenauts, and every subsequent game would be compared with it. Time to move on.

At the very least, I hope that more games get released using Objectnaut. It's a brilliant piece of work, and using it for a single game would simply be a waste.

I hope that in the future, Objectnaut will become available to other developers. 5th Cell will obviously keep this thing for now, but they can't make every game revolve around it. Lettings others license it for use would allow many other great games in various other genres to appear.

Also, once Scribblenauts becomes a huge success, I wonder if an Open Source project similar to the Objectnaut will emerge trying to accomplish the same feat.

Perhaps this is one of those issues you could take up with the, you know, publisher
not that it's really a hugely justified thing to whine about, anyway.

Scribblenauts doesn't support ENHANCED DSI FEATURES LIKE WPA, man. You don't just make a statement like that without clarifying that the game still works...I'm considering getting a DSi just to play the game on a bigger screen. :lol

BOOOO! HISSSSS! - just kidding of course. That's unfortunate, but understandable... Oh well... guess I keep my USB wifi dongle with WEP and MAC ID filtering around after all...

I did get a DSi just to play the game on a bigger screen... well that and the amazing thing that is Flipnote Studio... Anyone wanna buy a Polar White DS Lite with only minor hinge-crackage? :D

Scribblenauts is now a Game Gear exclusive!

OK, I have a question for anyone who's in the know about this game. I (and two friends) went to GamesCom today, and we spent quite some time at the Scribblenauts booth (possibly more than half an hour). While we were there, a person with a microphone (and a cameraman) approached us and said that they were making a 'small movie' about Scribblenauts. Then they asked us some questions (how we liked the game, whether we'd seen it before etc.) and filmed it.

Does anyone know what that 'small movie' actually was, and where we would be able to see it? I'm pretty sure it was not for German TV since they didn't mind us speaking English.

Can you input the name of your network in manually for the DS?

Seems like the WEP problem would be mostly solved if you could turn off SSID broadcasting.

Yes you can, but viewing un-broadcasted SSIDs is simpler than hacking the WEP.

Amazing!

Also, migulic, though I have no answer for you, do you/your friends have any impressions of your time with the game?

Yeah, I'll post some first impressions, althought it is pretty late here now so it won't be extensive. We only tried a few levels (1-1, 1-3, 1-4 and 1-5 IIRC), focusing on testing the vocabulary and gameplay. One thing really surprised us - the puzzles were really difficult, even this early in the game! Maybe we were just thinking too far, but we couldn't beat two of those levels (1-4 and 1-5) at all... And there were three of us. I'll post more detailed impressions later, but there is one notable thing. Even though you can use literally everything in the game, you never feel overpowered. The levels (at least the first few) are designed so that you cannot use the 'easy' solutions (eg. take a plane to get somewhere high, dig a hole under a wall, teleport somewhere); each object has its own limitations, just like in real life, and you really have to think to solve the puzzles.

But then of course, we maybe just thought too much...

What was cool as well, was the creativity all throughout the game. If you type in 'answer', a Starite will appear - but it's the wrong one. A 'teleporter' teleports you somewhere into outer space, time machines work too (but everyone knows that due to Post 217), rickroll, NeoGAF and keyboard cat work.

I'll post some more impressions tomorrow.
