Seattle Seahawks' RB Marshawn Lynch plans to retire

Anyone else surprised he hasn't been paid substantially more than 50 million in salary contracts to this point? Thought he'd be worth more seeing how dominant he's been.

Nature of the business for his position.. you have to complete 4 full seasons to become an unrestricted free agent. At this point you're 24 to 26 years old, for RB that's typically your "peak". So at that point you have a few options, sign a 2 or 3 year deal and then hope for one more contract, or sign a 4 year and basically be done with ever getting a big contract again. Or you do what Marshawn did and sign a 4 year deal and then renegotiate for 2 more years, making it a 6 year basically, knowing that at the end you're financially done ever getting money in the NFL of a large amount as you're now 30 to 31 years old and damaged goods.

I hope more guys are able to do this. Get paid and set your family up for life and leave without fucking your life up too much.

Someone in those comments nailed it. If this article had been about how he blew 50 mil and had nothing left the comment section would be filled with people calling him a "dumb thug, etc" but, since it's a story about an athlete being sensible with their wealth no one has anything to say.
Is this the place for that? Everyone is congratulating him on being smart about this whole thing and providing a little more information for those not in the know.

Good for him if he feels this is the right thing. He was an incredible running back and a joy to watch.

Nice break for the Seahawks too.

RBs are undervalued and they run out of gas or get injured quickly. You pretty much get 1 or 2 shots at big money as an RB.

What about Gore? The 49ers used him for so long it felt like. Or was that normal?

Edit: replaced fely with felt. Because I still can't type with phones after like 8 years.

This moment will live on forever in my mind. Never been so hyped for a play that I wasn't there to see in person.

What a great career for an amazing player. Glad he's getting out now before he gets injured further.

His abdominal injury this season seemed really bad. Was it ever clarified exactly what happened to him?

I'm surprised it's that much in an era when RBs rarely get big money contracts... But looking it up guess he's the 2nd highest paid RB in the NFL behind Peterson.

I don't think his value skyrocketed until he re-signed with the Seahawks in 2012. And throughout the 2015/2016 season he had to sit out a lot (though I'm not really familiar with what happens to player salaries when they have to sit out due to injuries)

8.5 seasons at $50 million seems pretty great IMO. Retiring at 29 with $50 million unspent in the bank? Very smart.

You'll be missed Lynch.

Hawks would not be the same team without him. He and Carroll brought something special to the team, and that mindset pervaded every aspect of the organization.

Good luck to him in the future, glad he got out before his body was destroyed.

He also gave me the most amazing play I've ever seen in my life. He's made being a Season Ticket Holder something to remember over the past years.

You guys notice how so many of those MVPs that came out for the superbowl anniversary tribute couldn't even walk right? That's the future that people need to worry about playing in the NFL too long.

This is how NFL (or every sport) should be.

- Make $25 million.
- Retire the moment you make that money.
- Make way for newer players.
- Heal, and do something else with life.

That's how anyone who hits 8 (or even 7) figures should be. I'll never understand why millionaires keep working.

Granted, that's probably while I'll never be a millionaire: I'm lazy and want to not work, while they apparently get off on it.

^^^^

It always tickles me to see Hasselbeck in there. That game was the death of his career as a Hawk, and life for Lynch as a Hawk.

Goodbye Beastmode. There was a report that he hasn't touched any of his actual salary, living thru his endorsement money and other income instead so he should have a pretty nice retirement.

That game basically changed the Seahawks identity to what they were the past few years. I think they're a slightly different team now that Russell Wilson took the leap into being an elite pocket passer, but yeah.

I've mentioned it in a few other threads, but his teammates all say he is one of the smartest guys on the team and he helped the rookie players out with their 401ks and retirement planning. I think that the real Marshawn Lynch, the one we don't see is probably a different person than the one we do see.

One of if not my favorite players. Really sad to see him leave, and I'm grateful for everything he's brought to our city, and hope he isn't as banged up as a lot of other football players out there after retirement. It's a good thing he's not needlessly extending his career, even if he can probably play a few more seasons.

Not surprised in the least about him not spending any of his money, hawks players have always said he's one of the smartest on the team.

Keep doing you boss.
