On my phone so not a ton of quotes, but here's the gist:

The case will make two arguments. One, that the federal government cannot order local police departments to do anything or coerce action by threatening to withhold dollars.

Second, the city will argue that they have not done anything illegal. Even if the city wanted to help, lawyers will argue, they cannot because the city doesn’t collect information on undocumented immigrants.

Mayor will announce it at 2PM Pacific/5PM Eastern, in ~40 minutes.

If local governments can give the finger to the federal government over weed laws they think are stupid, they should be able to do the same to immigration laws they think are stupid. Republicans love federalism, right?

Good. The more lawsuits against this orange fuck the better. Bury that piece of shit in courtrooms across the country.

To be fair, though I'm not sure if they're predicating their first argument exclusively on coercing police departments or "action" by local governmental entities in general, but is this not the way that the Obama administration basically tried to force schools to protect the rights of transgender students? I hate to defend Trump on anything, but that argument kind of cuts both ways. It's just that in his case, he's using it for his typical hateful actions as opposed to where it has been used for good by others in the past.

Do they have a leg to stand on with the federal money thing? I have no idea what the precedents are with stuff like this, but with how common you hear the federal government toss that threat out you'd think they'd have a solid leg to stand on.

As much as I think cities should sue him, it seems almost as if they are playing into a trap or something. He wants to stoke the suburb/rural vs. city narrative because he knows his base hates the types of people who live in cities. (Jews, blacks, and liberals) It could play out in a way that makes it harder, not easier, on these cities to stand up to him. But they should also not do nothing. It's a stickier situation than most people think, I think.

The Trump administration should first define what a sanctuary city is. The definition is very broad and is more of political jargaon.

Cities will win.

It's mentioned further down in the article, but the city was considering suing a while ago just to get an on-the-record definition from Trump.

I'm not sure they have standing to sue, given that Trump has only made threats without any actual action. The case doesn't seem ripe, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it is bounced by the court on that basis. (They can always litigate the issue again if Trump begins acting on his threats.)

The whole world will soon see that the president’s executive powers to protect the country and its borders are extensive and will not be questioned.

We have a judiciary that has taken far too much power and become in many cases a supreme branch of government. This has to stop.

Not exact obviously. And god I hope they send out Miller again.

How sad is it that everyone from our cities to our scientists are basically playing a shell game to delay the administration for as long as possible hoping desperately that voters come through for us all.

It is similar insofar as they're both examples of federal law clashing with state laws but Obama's guidance was a clarification on Title IX which prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs receiving federal funding. The difference is Trump is trying to dictate municipal law enforcement when it conflicts with federal law which is a legal grey area. My understanding is that states cannot prohibit enforcement of federal laws by federal officers such as ICE or the DEA but there's not much precedence for the federal government forcing municipalities to enforce those laws against their will when there's a conflict with state laws.

Is the first point arguing that local governments can refuse to enforce federal laws?

Yes. Local police aren't the Feds and aren't required to enforce federal laws.

You can in fact codify the opposite of federal law. See legal marijuana for example.

The question of scope is the key point.

He isn't insane. He's dumb, selfish, greedy and racist. Don't excuse the actions of a evil idiot with an excuse like insanity.

He's pretty much a textbook example of narcissistic personality disorder.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...ality-disorder/basics/definition/con-20025568

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

To a fucking T.

Back in February, Seattle's socialist city councilwoman Kshama Sawant called on activists to demand that Seattle police defend the city's immigrant population against ICE agents.

The mayor responded calling the demand "irresponsible and dangerous". But what alternative is there? If we're serious about defending sanctuary cities, aren't our own local police the obvious force to do it?

Seattle is a failing city with record crime rates and unemployment blah blah blah sad.

There's your incoming tweet.

Mean tweets about Seattle coming in 3..2...

The Mariners are a disgrace, the Seahawks choked against Brady in the Superbowl, and the Sonics hated Seattle so much that they left for Oklahoma. Pathetic City. The space needle needs to be destroyed because it promotes vaccinations. Sad!

Seattle doesn't want the Sonics and people in the suburbs can eat a bag of dicks.
