Sega Dreamcast - Appreciation and Emulation Thread

Actually, the most common complaint I hear about the game is how easy it is. I haven't played it myself but from some youtube gameplay it definitely seems like a manageable game for newer players.

Sounds like it might be for me then. I appreciate the skill to get the high scores and to one credit shumps, but I'm not in that league. I just like it when they balance the ability for skilled players to challenge themselves, while still letting players like me get to the later levels. I really liked Sturmwind in that regard.

I have Ghost Blade. It's another pretty generic Hucast game that doesn't bring anything new to the table. In a post-Sturmwind world, there's no reason to give it a pass. Hucast should step up and do better.

I remember few years ago reading that they were preparing a 2D Saber Rider game.
Didnt know about the Kickstarter.

Though I hate how they changed the story in the dub. Only the music is better than the original.

They edited and censored the whole series basically. Also in the original the Japanese guy was the team leader

Definitely!!!

Well that's good to hear. I just had to have it the way it was meant to be played. Though the PSP one was good for what it was.

Having an arcade cabinet of it would be the next best thing. Only know of one place that has it. I guess a nice Dreamcast arcade stick would have to do. What's the best affordable one out there?

Great decision, especially if you get 4 players together, it's a lot of fun. I liked the PSP version for what it was too, but nothing beats getting some friends together and playing a few rounds in person. I'm probably in the minority, but I liked 2 more than 1, but that's probably because I'm not the best fighter and I enjoyed the level of chaos in 2's arenas more :)

Was on vacation near Naples, Florida and found tiny treasure at a local retro shop

The Speed Devils "clean cover" is probably the hardest to find variant in the Dreamcast collecting community. Next to Sonic Adventure LE and the All-Stars version of Ready 2 Rumble, it's also the game I've had the most trouble finding. I haven't seen it on eBay in like a year.

Still curious about the history of the thing. It's not a completely different manual, but a high quality sticker super-glued to the original cover. Everything else is the same. On other sites people have reported finding copies in Utah and Austin TX, but there's zero indication of why it exists. Best guess is a retailer was uncomfortable with a literal devil on the cover.

what would be a good vga to hdmi converter to get for this? this is what i'm using as far as the vga output goes as it was thrown in with the dreamcast when I bought it some days ago. works really nice with an old monitor I have lying around but i'm trying to play it on my tv.

I honestly don't think "good" VGA to HDMI converters exist. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Another poster had asked about a VGA to HDMI adapter, and this one sounded promising. It doesn't do any image scaling, it just passes on the native size that the Dreamcast outputs via VGA, theoretically minimizing lag.

that looks interesting. kinda wish the price was a tad lower though and that it had inputs for L/R audio instead of a stereo one but cables for that are inexpensive I guess

That'd be me, I still haven't bought one though. 720x480 isn't officially supported by that device so I wish I could see some video proof of this. Their customer service told me they didn't know for sure but expect that while like you said it won't add much lag it probably will squish the image slightly to 640x480 if that's gonna bother you. So in this case I've got some doubts about the native image size part...

Another one I've come across that sounds promising is the LKV350 if you can find one. Says it scales to 1080p but apparently that's a lie and it doesn't mess with the image at all. Again though, Dreamcast VGA resolution isn't officially supported so while it reportedly works who knows what it actually does

If it does squish it it won't look too bad though. Depends on how picky you are I guess

That's what I plan to use too, take a BNC-scart from the PVM to my switchbox where I have consoles hooked. But I assume scart RGB is a simpler option than VGA?

yeah my pvm doesn't support a 31 khz signal I don't think, so I have a separate VGA setup on an old CRT computer monitor.

Cool, so it does exist! Now the question is... would it be better to go that route or does a Dreamcast scart cable provide the same quality?

VGA to component should be easy, it's ultimately just a sync combiner and should have very little signal loss.

Then it's just up to your TV to handle the 480p to native scaling, which is great on my TV.

Definitely go VGA over scart for modern screens. That way you get 480p instead of 480i.

The Toro is actually a VGA box, it just has a scart output that does 480p. Using RGB from a Dreamcast will not do this.

Damn my CRT doesn't support 480p...

My bad, I mean the Sega stick. I was under the impression that it was manufactured and distributed by ASCII in Japan and Agetec in the US.

Ah, no worries. I know ASCII made some optical sticks, but IIRC all the branded ones (like the CVS2 ones for Dreamcast) were mechanical. Always wanted to try an optical one, but they're rare.

Agetec one is great though. I always go back to it.

discontinued :(

are the cheapo options on eBay decent? I've got a big CRT with component in and would rather play on that than my 24" monitor

I've had nothing but disappointment with VGA to Component converters. I haven't tried the one pictured above though.

But I wouldn't just buy the random ones listed on eBay or Amazon.
