I don't know if Ecco has a good sales pipeline but I suspect people don't like playing with real animals.
The first Ecco the Dolphin is the best selling game in the series by far. t was ported to, or released (as a ROM):
- The Sega 8-bit consoles (Game Gear and SMS)
- Sega CD
- Windows 3.1/ 9x (under Expert Software), and was also bundled with Dell computers and such.
- Sony Playstation 2 - Sega Genesis Collection
- PSP - Sega Genesis Collection
- Nintendo Wii - Virtual Console
- Game Boy Advance - Sega Smash Pack
- Xbox 360 - Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
- Playstation 3 - Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
- OnLive (remember OnLive?)
- Nintendo 3DS - 3D Ecco the Dolphin -Eshop
- iOS (Sega Forever series - 2017)
- Android (Sega Forever series -2017)
- Steam - Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive Classics ( delisted) - Ecco 1 and 2 were available on the Steam version of this collection. But missing from the PS4 and Xbone ports.
- Nintendo Switch (NSO service)
- Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive mini
- Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 (Japanese Mega-CD double pack release with Tides of Time)
- Quite a few of those @ (AT) Games consoles
The first Ecco the Dolphin game is basically a 'main stay' Genesis/ Mega Drive release that Sega will bundle with just about any 16bit compilation of ROM's. It is one of the more defining games of the Genesis and Mega Drive hardware, and one of the better selling games globally. Tides of Time didn't sell anywhere near as well as the first game. But still makes the rounds every once in a while. Defender of the Future came out in 2000 on the Dreamcast originally. The early cancellation of the Dreamcast caused Defender of the Future to not sell so well. But it did get a PS2 release.
I would say that Ed Annuziata's x.com post is gaining quite a bit of traction... almost 20k views and a lot of retweets. Also, this is getting picked up by many non English gaming websites. There definitly is an interest in a new Ecco game. Perhaps a 2.5D based on that plays like the original? I have no idea if that gif came from an old prototype for his 'The Big Blue" project, or if it is a WIP build? Or was it AI generated?
