Those patents are rearing there heads again and the latest one leads us to believe that Sega's got a gun! It seems that Sega are set to reveal a new "shell" like peripheral for the Revolution controller that that will add light-gun-like capabilities to the console.

According to the filing, "The gun-shaped controller comprises a controller in the shape of a gun and a trigger lever, and a cross-shaped directional key to be operated with a player's finger is arranged in the upper part of a grip." Whatever Sega are up to it sounds very interesting

You can read the full abet slightly confusingly worded filing here

It’s a boring Saturday evening so I guess this news could be interesting! Is it the first (kinda) official news of a shell for the controller?

It was a no-brainer that a gun attachment would be coming, but I didn't think we'd be hearing about one from Sega before Namco or even Nintendo themselves (for legacy NES and SNES Zapper/Super Scope games).

from the patent page...

Nice!
Patent says that the gun allows recoil in the mount, so maybe there is a bit of a kick in the controller?
Also says a cable could be connected from the rear if they want, so nunchuck attachement (analogue stick to move and a gun to shoot?)

where does this say anythign about the revolution.. this is the dreamcast gun.. it is shows a VMU installed.. where is this supposed "revolution" accessory?

Isn't that gun in Fig. 8 identical to the Dreamcast gun? Even to the point of having a VMU slot?!

That was the most exciting moment until it was ruined by reality.

Actually:

Abstract not available for DE69928751D
Abstract of corresponding document: EP1002559

It's a new patent related to the DC one, and the details of this patent aren't available. So it could be something, but unsurprisingly we won't know until they want us to know.

Okay, so the pic's bogus, but why does the patent report say 1/12/2006?
OZAKI NAOJI (JP); SAKURAI TOMOYUKI (JP); OKUMURA YUTAKA (JP); MATSUURA JUNICHIRO (JP); KIDA MAKIO (JP); SUMI MASAYUKI (JP); HIROYOSHI AKIHITO (JP); YOKOYAMA YUTAKA (JP)
And are those who the patent is credited to, actually work at Sega?
And will there be a light-gun rennasaince next-gen, and will it be awesome?
There's only one of those questions that I know for sure.

Description of corresponding document: EP1002559

The description is from the old patent as well, the new one is DE69928751D. There's no details about what this is at all, or what it's for, only that it's an extension of the 'Gun-shaped controller' patents they already have.
