Getting this game for Wakamoto. Damn you to hell for bringing it up in IRC and having jiji find out about Wakamoto's involvement. :lol

(of course, you also know the other [smaller] reason I'll be getting this... haha)

Oh man, those character designs are crazy :lol.

This game played really well at E3. I'm quite psyched.

And some of them even have Shinobi scarves! Makoto Tsuchibayashi should design all characters for all videogames ever.

Never thought I'd say this, being a Capcom whore, but KOEI's versions > Capcom's.

Koei's Mitsuhide Akechi:

Koei's Kenshin Uesugi:

No way! SW's Oda is badass :P Maybe it's because the english voice actor is so good at portraying him :P

There's no way on earth Capcom could top SW's Hideyoshi (if he's even in the game) He was my favorite character in XL.

This is a seiyuu appreciation thread. By that logic alone, Capcom >>>>>>>>> Koei in this case. There's no room for discussion because Capcom's gone all out to get the best of the best in terms of voice talent. :D

There is no bloody way any VA (let alone an English one, hahaha) could possibly do a better job than Norio Wakamoto. No fucking way. End of argument.

/Wakamoto-worshipping asshole :lol

Okaaaaaaay. FUCK YOU CAPCOM! Guess what I found:

http://www.capcom.co.jp/devilkings/

Let's see what Capcom's doing.....

Changing the entire storyline - Check!

Renaming all the characters - Check!

Removing all references to Japanese history and culture - Check!

Renaming the game with a DMC style logo and title - Check!

Turning Nobunaga into the Devil King - Check!

WOW LOOKS LIKE WE'RE BACK IN 1990! :lol

Times like this I'm glad I never buy US games, since my PS2 can't even play them. What a fucking joke. July can't come sooner. :D

What the hell? So they are milking Devil May Cry without actually making a Devil May Cry game?

It's obvious, they think American gamers are dumb and hate weird names "I can't pronounce that d00de!11!" will make me not like the game.

But dude look, it has that Devil May Cry font man!!11!, so it's probably a pretty good game!?!

Yeah, check it out dude let's get it!

That's what Capcom USA's PR is thinking.

EDIT: HOLY ****

I actually looked at the webpage. If I didn't know any better, I thought that was a Devil May Cry spinoff.

Man, if they are going to change the game so much than i HOPE THEY SINCERLY make a Devil May Cry spin-off. Cus every unaware gamer in the world is GOING TO THINK it's a Devil May Cry spin-off, so they should have just MADE A devil may cry spin-off...

.....

....and put it on PSP :D :D

Lovely. And, here, this morning, I was expressing concerns about the dub! :lol I really thought we were past this kind of brain-replacement localization-fucking. Do they think Onimusha's and Samurai Warriors' adherence to their original settings and characters hurt their sales? This is really retarded. Welcome back to 1990!

Since the fucked-up English site appeared on capcom.co.jp, I wonder if these changes are coming down from the JP side.

There is an IGN interview from E3 where the developer is bragging about the changes. Does he hate money?

(and no, I'm not buying this game either. I like Asian history, and if I wanted DMC, I'd buy it)

Considering how bad the names and descriptions are (even by Capcom USA standards) it wouldn't suprise me if this was done on the JP side.

AHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahaahahahahaahahahahahaha

*ahem*

Well, looks like Capbomb can't even rip of Dynasty Warriors properly. Game does look decent, though. Two player co-op? Man those changes they made are strange.....

Ok Kobayashi really needs to watch this game horribly flop in the US for the crap he's trying to pull:

In Japan, [Devil Kings] is called Sengoku Basara, and it focuses on Japanese history in the same sense that Dynasty Warriors focuses on Chinese history. So it's similar in that sense, but with a Capcom style, a Capcom flair to it.

[...]

Then, we said, "Okay, let's release it in North America -- what can we do to make it different again?" So we said, "Okay, we'll make it dark." Call it Devil Kings. The main character sold his soul to the devil. We'll darken up the background, give more moves, more ability to power your character up, and things like that for the American market.

The Japanese version of the game is based on Japanese history. There are some fantasy elements that didn't actually happen, of course, but enough of it is there.

With the U.S. version, we've taken that element out entirely. Some of the backgrounds may retain that eastern flair. Many of them don't and are brand new; many of the enemies are brand new; and it's no longer based around the idea of feudal Japan at all. That part of the game has now been changed to be darker, devilish.

Has Koei's success in marketing historical games in the US shown Capcom nothing? Why do they feel they need to "dumb it up" now for Americans who appear to only want dark characters, devilish plots, more moves and attacks and are unable to appreciate or understand Japanese history according to Kobayashi? I say every US gamer should BOYCOTT this game!

We took the concept, and said, "What can we do to differentiate this to make this different from the Dynasty Warriors games?" And we decided the secret maybe lay in some other games Capcom has done. We said, "Let's give the characters a kind of Devil May Cry flair -- some really cool moves, like the kind of things you might see in Devil May Cry. Let's the characters and make them all vastly and distinctly different from one another, like Street Fighter II." That's the Japanese version.

Plus it's not historically accurate?

Yeah, this is pretty retarded. Kobayashi's definitely not losing any sleep over this, but it's not my responsibility to worry about producers' bottom lines when calling out offensive, dishonest localization choices. :)

The game looks really good, though (looks like DW4 Empires + Sengoku period + style), and I like a lot of the JP voice talent working on it, so I'll import.

*Rewatches the first Sengoku Basara trailer*
Listens to the Devil May Cry theme playing...

*Plays the E3 demo of Devil Kings at Capcom's Booth*
Notices they now change the character names and font to Devil May Cry style...

LONG LIVE THE DEVIL KING WITH SWORD IN ONE HAND AND SHOTGUN IN THE OTHER!
This is Chaos Legion 2 to me.

my interest in this title just vanished after reading those localization tidbits.

I guess the dude *doesn't* want to cater to westerners who actually have an interest in japan's feudal era.

obligatory unlockable Dante bonus character or is every character in the game just going to be a Dante ripoff?
will we also have zombies & Wesker?
does Capcom even have multiple game series anymore or is it all going to be Chun Li & Megaman vs. Evil Nobunaga?

henshin a gogo baby!

To speak in Capcom's defense, just to add some balance to the discussion at hand...

Dynasty Warriors sells well in Japan.

And apparently it sells like trash in the US if DW4 or 5 or 8 (whatever they are on) is any indication.

Yet, Devil May Cry sells very well in the US.

So, what Capcom did was make the game a wannabe Dynasty Warriors in Japan (to have it sell a lot)

And take that same game and make it a wannabe Devil May Cry in the US (to have it sell a lot).

High fives Capcom USA, but you still pissed us the GAFers though :(

I guess the same would apply to Ubi's Warrior Within.

Capcom is right for doing what they are doing. The fact is, most Westerners could care less about Japanese history and feudal Japan.

Doesn't mean they're automatically going to plunk down fifty on "omg it's like DMC but it's not DMC!" though

You might be right Belguardo (sp), although Capcom looks at numbers.

The Devil May Cry series has sold almost 6 million units, that's their biggest franchise this generation, ofcourse Capcom USA is going to be Dante's bitch.

Dynasty Warriors 3 + 4 both sold over 400K each in NA. They both should be near 500K by now. Dynasty Warriors 5 will get there eventually. I bet Devil Kings doesn't crack 200K.

I don't think changing things will affect sales at all.

Will Capcom use the space excuse on Bluray? On a bluray disc, you can fit all three region versions on one disc. That way you can cater to everybody without pissing off anybody. You can do this for a lot of games this generation on a DVD9 disc.

But then they would have to "waste" resources actually translating the Japanese version. That won't do! :lol

Firstly , this game made by the producer of DMC and RE series
this game is Capcom's (I know Capcom do bad recently but it's still one of the biggest Company in our industry)
T.M Revolution do the theme song
Very unique character design , you'll never have an idea how much this game design appeal to japanese market

I won't say this game will be popular , but it has its own potential :D

Well, I guess you know better than I. Personally I never figured those shitty games could break 10,000..... :lol

Shadow of Rome (another semi-decent Capcom game, new IP) is at around 100,000 in 3 months worth of sales.

That'll end up breaking 200,000 by the year end most likely.

I'm sure Devil Kings (which is inadvertantly) milking DMC's sucess will be able to do similar.

And you're telling me you're not going to even rent Devil Kings...

It seems Mr. Bob and I won't agree on anything until Ninja Gaiden 2 comes out. :D

Pfffft, rent. I'll probably buy Devil Kings despite my rants! :lol

I figure it won't take much to top Devil May Cry 3 and I bought that game so I might as well get this too. :D

I'm thinking that the changes for the US version were actually Kobayashi's ideas.

So the solution to all of this would be to kill Kobayashi and replace him with a Japanese developer whose brain isn't stuck in the 80s?

Good point, maybe I should check out the DW series slightly more.

I mean, I bought Devil May Cry 2 (aka the black sheep of the DMC series), apparently that game got higher ratings than DW5...so, DW shouldn't suck all that bad. :lol :lol :lol wait a minute >.>

The official site updated with the profiles for the 3 new characters.... only 2 left now. I wonder if they have more big name seiyuus lined up. :D

P.S. Koyasu sounds like..... Koyasu. How surprising! :lol

If he was 16-18 years old at Sekigahara, then he was like a month old when Nobunaga was killed. He is considered an Edo Period figure and not Sengoku/Azuchi-Momoyama.

yeah but since when did nobunaga carry a shotgun around and shit

LET'S PARTY LIKE IT'S 1989!

Kind of stupid for Capcom to do this, but whatever. It's not like I was going to buy this game anyway.

Since the Portugese gave him guns. I dont think there is information in English as to who gave him the gun directly, but I would suspect it was Luis Frois and the Jesuits, who were trying VERY HARD to get Nobunaga to convert. Nobunaga is widely acknowledged to have been as powerful as he was because of his rapid adoption of guns and western gunnery tactics, and this speed of adoption was closely linked to his relationship with the Jesuits.

The first rifle given to a daimyo is currently in one of the temples of the Daitokuji in Kyoto, next to an awesome Go set used by Nobunaga and Hideyoshi.

There is suprisingly scant information on Nobunaga in English. The best resource is Mary Elizabeth Berry's biography of Hideyoshi, but even that glances over the meat of Nobunaga's life. If I was not applying with a game company right now, I'd be doing preliminary research for grad school and a Ph.D. in Japanese History (speciality on Nobunaga :)).
