Serious Computer problem: "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Hey. I borrowed someone's computer for a QUICK second, and under their command, left it running for them. However, unbeknownst to me, it had no battery in it (Separate, was charging externally) and when I flipped the switch, poof, it turned off. I thought nothing of it and went to a football game.

I come home and try to restart the computer, but whenever I start windows either in Safe Mode or Normal Mode, I get the error "UNMOUNTABE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Is the hard drive truly fucked? Please guys, if you have any advice or anything to help fix this problem PLEASE share, as this is very serious. Thank you in advance.

I used to remember, but my recent ability to not give a fuck about PC's in general unfortunately made me forget. Sorry man.

I think you might have to fix the MBR or something. fixmbr I think. I think.

Where's Phoenix for clarification :\

Thanks for the help so far guys. Looks like I have to cross my fingers and pray that there is an XP recovery disk handy. Please god....

The only other machine in the house (That I am communicating on now) is a Linux box. On top of that I had homework to do. Going to try to find the XP disk. Wish me luck (Pray for my soul if I can't find it)

Failing being able to find the XP disc, you might try to download the "Ultimate Boot CD." It comes with a ton of hard drive utilities, including several manufacturers' programs. I'm not a hard drive pro, but it does contain a few MBR tools that may help, if that is indeed the problem.

Thanks, I found the XP CD, though, but the result is not too rosy either.

When I do a chkdsk, I get:
The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems

Not looking too good for me...

BTW: It's a Fujitsu ( :( ) Hard Drive. Sorry to hear about your loss, bro, but at least it was yours. This comp is NOT mine, and it's needed for school, both mine and hers. I'm really fucked...

I ask because some older big brand (IBM, DELL) laptops lock up when you try and fuck around with them, or if they think that you're trying to fuck with them. When that happens they usually give you errors such as the one you're experiencing. However, the laptops usually unlock themself after 24 hours, so might trying waiting and see if the problem goes away.
