In Columbus, no less. Heh, what a great city to spend my college years in :/

The shooting was 5 miles away from me.

Man, that's just totally fucked up. I wonder what the status on Patrick Lachman is. He was just awesome in the Halford band. Christ, it's like you can't go anywhere anymore without worrying about some fuck nut.

Man, the shooting was 6.2 miles away from where I am. Why does Columbus get all the nut jobs lately? The I-270 shooter.......

From the damageplan forums:

all i can say is holy crap!! that was such a freakin' nightmare... i don't ever want to be a part of anything like that again... i'm still shaking.... i don't even know what to say...

i was up close to the stage on the side where DBD was playing.... then i saw the guy jump out of the crwod onto the stage... he was yelling something about how "you broke up pantera.... you ruined my life.... what about phil??? he needs heroin money..." or something like that then i saw the gun and he shot DBD right in the head... when DBD went down he kept shooting... then he turned around for bobzilla then vinnie... teh hole time i thought it was part of the show... i had blood on me i was so close... i'm still freakin' out here...

after he turned around and kept shooting i was gone... i swear i almost crapped my pants... it was ####' crazy as ####... people were totally messed up outside... i was standing next to this one chick and she was crying and couldn't stop... she fell on the ground and it was like she was possesed or something... dude it was so kayotic its not even funny... the cops showed up and then people started sayin' that DBD was killed... then people started freaking out even more...

i can't belive this happend... its so crazy... its totally unreal and there's no way to describe how messed up i am right now...

i had tickets to the show in flint michigan too... i don't know whats going to happen... theres some blood on my ticket stub so i'm going to sell it on ebay or keep it or something... i know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)

#### what a wild #### nigth... dude i won't even be able to sleep tonight
This is really not the news I'd hoped for upon logging on to GAF... :(

Jesus Christ.

Dimebag was a hero of mine when I started playing guitar. Vulgar Display of Power is the first CD I ever bought, for fuck's sake.

I sure as hell hope that Vinnie isn't the other person that was killed. I interviewed him last month when Damageplan played in San Francisco. I just can't believe we'd lose two of the most influential metal musicians of the 90s in one incident.

God, I hope this isn't true.

Dude's not too shaken up to think about profit, that's good.

I'm not even a fan of Pantera/Dimebag, but this is a bunch of shit. RIP Dimebag.

Posted this in the other thread, just thought I'd repeat it here since this seems to be the 'official' thread:

This is just horrible. I have heard that his brother Vinnie was killed as well, which just makes it twice as bad. (this is still unconfirmed, could be untrue)

I met the two of them after a Pantera show in 94, and they were unbelievably nice and awesome to me. Dimebag (I think still "Diamond" then) signed my guitar with a nice "CFH" under the pickups. As you can imagine, I was pretty fucking thrilled. In fact, I still am, every time I think of that night.

I can't believe that out of all the shitty people in the world who could've had this happen to them, it had to hit the one really nice dude who truly brought a lot to metal. His style was totally unique and will never be faithfully reproduced by anyone. Of course, I'm sure a million other people could speak far more eloquently about him than I could. We'll be hearing a lot of that over the next few days. :(

The man had an Ace Frehley tattoo with Ace's real autograph tattooed right onto it. You really can't beat that.

I think that post that was quoted earlier is fake, by the way. That message board is totally overrun with 'joke' posts, and that seems to me like it might be just a more cleverly worded one. The bit about the heroin money is a blatant dis attempt, and is pretty impossible to believe considering that they were playing a song at the time - I doubt it would've been possible to hear the guy saying anything.

Vinnie is alive. Pat was the second one murdered. Darrell took half a dozen shots to the head...I think I'm gonna be sick.

Also he said he had blood on his ticket and he was going to sell it on ebay. It just reeks of BS.

God, this sucks. I was a big Pantera fan back in high school but hadn't thought about Dimebag Darrel in a long time, until last week when my friend started playing the Damage Plan album at work. We were just talking about how it was pretty good... And then this happens. My co-worker is just astounded over here, he hadn't heard. I walked in and told him the news with the Damage Plan album sitting right there on his desk, it's like his #1 CD right now.

We were even talking about going to a Damage Plan show and reliving some of our teenage metal years.

Damn.

Wonder what the security guard who patted that guy down is thinking right now.

The Alrosa is not known for quality security. One of the reasons I don't go there.

I can't imagine how badly this is going to fuck with the concert scene.

Goddamnit I hate people sometimes. Dimebag was the fuckin' man back in my Guitar World reading days. He gave such hilarious interviews, and he had some killer riffs. Was never huge into Pantera, but I always had much respect for the band members. ODB now Dimebag! Jesus

Apparently a tech at the club said Vinnie used his phone to call their parents, so he's not dead.

Though if they both were, that would be super shitty.

Never heard of the guy, but sorry to hear about this nonetheless.

2003 and 2004 have had some pretty striking deaths, regarding influential musicians/artists.

Same as above, don't listen to Pantera, but this is truly awful. To think that somebody would just run up on stage and take a life is insane.

This sucks. I never listened to Damage Plan much, but I was a huge Pantera fan back in the day. They had the best pits and put on one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Dimebag was a guitar god to many of my friends.

They've updated the news story with more details and the fucker's name.

UPDATED: 11:41 am EST December 9, 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police released the name of the gunman who allegedly went on a shooting rampage at a Columbus nightclub Wednesday night, killing four people before a police officer shot him dead.

Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, reportedly jumped onto a concert stage and open fire, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Rd.

Police have scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference. Watch it live on NBC 4 and nbc4i.com.

A crowd of about 250 people was inside for a concert by Damageplan, a heavy metal band. Two former members of the band Pantera formed the group.

The band took the stage shortly after 10 p.m., and minutes later, a man, who was wearing a hockey jersey and hooded sweatshirt, began firing at point-blank range at least four times at guitarist Dimebag Darrell, NBC 4's Kyle Anderson reported.

Darrell Abbott, who was known as "Dimebag Darrell," was pronounced dead at the scene, NBC 4's Kyle Anderson reported. Police released the names of two others who died. They were Nathan Bray and Erin Halk, both audience members.

"(The gunman) came on stage, from the back, like he knew what he was doing and went straight to Dimebag Darrell immediately," an unidentified witness said.

Gale reportedly shot and killed another member of the band before firing shots into the crowd.

Columbus police were flooded with 911 calls from concertgoers right after the shooting. Some witnesses said Gale took a person hostage. Minutes later, a Columbus police Officer James D. Niggemeyer entered the nightclub and shot and killed Gale, police said.

Police did not identify the other person who died at the scene.

Authorities spent hours questioning audience members.

As calls for help came in, dozens of police and EMS crews were dispatched to the scene.

Emergency room workers at Riverside Methodist Hospital were told to watch out for people who would ask for care on Thursday. Police said that about 100 people left the Alrosa Villa before officers got the scene under control.

Two people who were shot were transported by ambulance to Riverside. Their names were not released and hospital officials would not comment about their conditions.

Columbus police and firefighters set up a triage outside the nightclub to treat anyone with minor injuries, NBC 4 reported.

Many people who were injured during the shooting spree and in the chaos that followed were put on buses and treated for injuries at the scene, NBC 4 reported.

Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair was joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.
Just to the person who mentioned Cash (and this is not meant in any disrespectful way), at least he had a relatively long life and was not taken from us in some senseless act of violence and brutality.

I heard a cop shot the guy dead, he didn't kill himself.

alleged - to assert without proof or before proving <the newspaper alleges the mayor's guilt>

This is what I hate about the news. They have all the proof they need! why do they insist on using "allegedly"?!?

this fucking sucks. I just[i/] got into Pantera (missed them in my teens/early twenty's somehow) and Damageplan was pretty good themselves. I hope they find a reason, because this is just weird.

That sucks man.

Pantera was such a legendary band.
TGST was one sick album.

Dimebag had, imo, contributed to the best riffs in metal history.
I still remember the deadly moshpits when they played here in south florida.

Sadly, those are about to become famous last words...

I've been studying all day until now...I can't believe this. I don't what to say other than his music will live on forever and he was easily one of the most influential metal guitarists ever. I don't know what to say.

No doubt about it. "Regular People," "Walk," "13 Steps to Nowhere," "Becoming," the list goes on. Darrell was responsible for some of the best thrash riffs ever conceived; right up there with anything Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax or Exodus ever did. And you just know the guy just had tons more great ideas waiting to be unleashed.
