Shadow of the Colossus - IGN hands-on

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/608/608001p1.html

May 2, 2005 - It isn't the sequel to ICO that everybody hoped it was, but that doesn't mean that Sony's next big adventure doesn't have the same potential. Confirmed for a U.S. release sometime in the third or fourth quarter of 2005, Shadow of the Colossus (also known as Wanda to Kyozou in Japan) is already one of IGN's most anticipated PlayStation 2 games of the year.

Developed by the same team responsible for the aforementioned ICO, Shadow of the Colossus boasts one of the most intriguing concepts I've seen in quite some time (while still maintaining a rather classic feel)

.
.

The real trick to beating the game is actually finding the giants to vanquish in the first place. Spread out over three-dozen different environments that are hundreds of square feet across each (600x600), the stages are actually enormous landscape puzzles. Players will have to trek through forests, rivers, hills, mountains, plateaus, and charred wastelands in order to find the illusive prayer shrines. Once found, these shrines can then be used to summon a colossus for an epic battle to the death.
As everyone can guess, this is my most anticipated game this year.

Does any of you armchair financial analysts have any idea if Ico could have possibly made any profit? This game seems to be made by even bigger team and on a even bigger budget, isn't it a bit surprising it got greenlighted, from a purely financial standpoint?

Some of the best art I've seen in a game, and love the sense of scale that comes across in all the shots.

Really looking forward to this.

So that's where the gameplay is: finding the colossi. If the environments are half as good as Ico castle, just running around will be an amazing experience.

I beleive that even if Ico wasn't profitable, it got so much critical praise to make a sequel wothwile from a PR perspective alone. First party games are not always about the bottom line, helping the perception of the platform is as important.

this game is going to be sweet!!!!!

IGN says that the only enemies in the game are the colossuses themselfs, so i guess there will be TONS of puzzles to figure out, and i hope there will be alot of secrets hidden thruout the world!

i want an adventure game that plays like zelda and i hope this is the one!
i want a massive world where it will take me ages to travel from one side of the map to the other side.

GTA SA was big but i want this to be bigger.

This is my most anticipated game this year as well. I can't wait to play it at E3!

If I were to guess right now the contenders for game of the show they would be from the follow in no particular order:

Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Urban Reign
Zelda GC

Dunno if it's just me, and I know the games are very different, but I get Panzer Dragoon vibes from Wanda.

Which is a good thing :)

I'm guessing a good chunk of gameplay will also be climbing on those colossi and taking them down.

Doesn't surprise me either way, SCEI it rather into funding unique botique products. If it was up to SCEA, I doubt this would've been greenlighted though.

Indeed. Siren was another game that didn't do well, yet a sequel is coming (and it's my second most wanted game after Shadow of the Colossus)

Game looks very interesting. The art style in particular, very fresh and makes me want to play it now, something that doesn't really happen any more for me.

I'm still anticipating this, a lot, but I didn't really like what I saw in gamespot's videos. It has a seriously unfinished look to it, especially the intro which looks all kinds of screwed up at some points. I don't like the fact they are going the ICO route with the music...I really liked the tracks that I've heard so far. I guess it's a matter of waiting and seeing. :P

I actually like the approach to music like it's in Ico. That way music comes almost as a reward, the relief. However, didn't they say that the music plays while you are fighting (in Gamespot preview I think)?

I decided against watching the intro, what looked wrong in it?

Hopefully they'll be fixing whatever remaining problems are there, however, if the game is in the localization stage, doesn't that mean it's basically finished?

Well, it seems like there's more music in this game...we'll see.

About the intro, sometimes the background would suddenly disappear, looked strange, like they forgot to put the scenery in. :P It's also pretty boring and shows pretty much -nothing- in terms of spoilers, but that's something else. :P Nowhere near the WHOA feeling ICO's intro gives you.

OK, I've seen the trailer. I see the problem you are speaking of, and I also noticed the same thing in one of the gameplay video when the camera swings around. I think it's very nice intro though. Not nearly as long or as eventful as the on for Ico but certainly very pretty.

jett, did we see the same intro...?

THIS intro alone is a piece of art. very emotional, epic and beautiful. EVEN if its really unfinished. the music is also fantastic.

Boring? That intro is pure beauty. It shows Wanda, the man, riding his horse past a temple, through a magnificent bridge that leads to the "end of the world" or whatever.

WTF, did you have the volume up?

I had some issues with ICO, but the summary of the gameplay sounds hot. Maybe this is my sadistic side talking, but I'm anticipating this and Zelda largely because the developers are aiming for large worlds. I'm getting a little burned out on action-adventure games that keep the adventure part to a minimum.
