Shadowrun game on the horizon? MS applies for trademark

+2.

I asked Shane Kim about this at GDC. He was very tight lipped but his body language and ear to ear grin of it being mentioned leads me to believe that'll be a big one.

I *love* Shadowrun.

for all we know it could be a pc game

Umm, didn't we know about this for a long time? I remember three or four years ago reading about MS (or FASA, and hence MS) owning the rights to Shadowrun, and the creator of the series (who work(s/ed) for MS) promising that there would be another Shadowrun videogame.

If something finally materializes out of this, it would be fucking sweet. Shadowrun is an awesome sci-fi/fantasy RPG world... just loads of fun, cool, and pretty inventive. I'm not sure what you could really compare it to with other sci-fi.

It's a very detailed description of who owns the rights... Day 1 would be the studio rumored to be developing Shadowrun.

can you post some screens or reviews? Thanks

I never heard about Shadowrun before, only Shadowlands, which is one of the fathers of Diablo.

Whats sad about MS purchasing and ruining great games like mechwarrior and shadowrun? Gosh, I dunno.

The Mechwarrior franchise has been on a downhill slide since Mechwarrior 2.

Shadowrun is a pen & paper RPG... there is tons of art on the internet. Just do a google image search. There was a game made for the genesis.

Some more info

http://www.intercom.net/user/logan1/faq.htm

Fantasy & Science collide in the world of Shadowrun, where Man meets Magic & Machine! In the year 2050, magic has returned to a world dominated by megacorporations and the human mind has been interfaced with computers. Elves, dwarves, & trolls walk the streets, having shed their human guise. Great dragons soar above the Sprawl, their immense figures casting vague phantoms into the shadows of the megaplexes, where shaman & street samurai stalk, armed with the mystical weapons of the past & the cybernetic hardware of the future.

Basically shadowrun = Best bits of Blade Runner, Fallout, (insert cyberpunk)

snes version:

The game is based on a pen and paper RPG series

The snes version is alot more "traditional rpg" however

The genesis version had alot of stat tracking (followed the p&p more closely) you could mod your body with cybernetic implants (which would reduce your ability to use magic), you could pretty much go anywhere and do anything (use your implanted computer to jack into the matrix (yes THE MATRIX!), and hack pcs in a 3d world, this could be done to just hack bank accounts for quick cash or to retrieve pertinent data on a mission u were doing.) You also could fully modify your weapons using laser scopes, sound suppressor, new hand grips etc. The game was really really deep for its time. (Genesis version)

there was also and extremely rare segacd version.

Wooh that's scary, mumu! Shadowlands was the first game I worked on.
A first person rpg could be so cool for shadowrun. I think I might have to dust off the snes version.

I loved the SNES game

After the fact, I actually read up on a lot of the background info and it's really damn cool.

This would kickass on many levels

The way magic and technology exist Shadowrun is intresting. Everyone starts of with an Essence stat of 6. As you upgrade your character with cybernetics it not only costs you money, but it takes away from Essence permanetly. You can't drop your essence down to zero otherwise the technology takes over your spirit. If you want to be a magic user, lowering your Essence to much is a bad idea because spellcasting is partly based on your Essence.

Some typical archetypes for the Shadowrun universe are

Street Samurai: A highly skilled warrior. Usally has lots of cybernetic upgrades like Wired Reflexes, Cybernetic Eyes, and body armour thats embedded into the flesh.

Rigger: Highly skiledl in driving all sorts of vehicles like cars, helicopters, or fixed wing aircraft upgraded with weapons and armour.

Decker: A hacker.

Mage: A wizard.

Adept: Like a mage, but uses magic to enhance their body. Think like martial artist monk.

Shaman: Uses magic by being connected to a Totem. Think native American shaman.

Besides being a human, you can be a meta-human such as an Dwarf, Elf, Ork, or a Troll.

My memory is fuzzy, but i think i got quite some enjoyment out of that game on my AMIGA back then. However i remember excessive use of light switches? Anyway, you must be commended! :)

I loved the SNES game and read lots of the books.

A shadowrun PC game would be awesome and they better develop a Mechwarrior game for the PC too!

As a rule? Yes. But that is still your opinion. You are basically saying there is no room for improvement, which is completely false.

Theres loads of cyberpunk MMORPGs, we dont need another one.

Better a kickass action based rpg.

Well if it's anything like Fable it will be over way too soon and you'll be left with the character you're somewhat attached to, with nothing left to do but to create a new one. Even if they make it more like Diablo II, where you can play it both online and offline I think some sort of online function would be in order. So maybe saying MMO flat out is a bit much, but I'd like to see it online in some form that would allow players to roleplay with others (after all that is what Shadowrun and other tabletop RPG's are all about).

I played the hell out of the pen & paper game during my college days and the Genesis cart has to be the number two game that was played form start to finish on that console (Shining Force being #1). I love the heck out of ShadowRun and have been salivating for an XBox verision ever since Day One studios started dropping hints about a year or so ago.

The SNES version was great , but you owe it to yourself to check out the Genesis version. nothing beats getting your character and his party high enough level to take on Renraku strike teama head to head. This game was WAY before it's time, and I get faint just thinking of the things that developers could do with next-gen hardware and this well flushed out universe. I may pull the source books off the shelves tonight and flip through them.

I seem to remember we went a bit over the top using the "photoscape" lighting puzzle in the Egyptian levels . With all this shadowrun talk I might have to bust open maya and build some models....laters! :D

Holy crap this game is going to rock!

I have a feeling that after about 10 years of rumors, cancelled projects, and finally the resurrection of the game, there's going to be a book written about the drama that went on to get this game made.

The PC game which Microsoft cancelled when they bought FASA was going to be a cheap Tomb Raider clone (I think it even featured a woman lead).

Apparently Jordan Weisman didn't treat his employees very well at WizKids, and was a decent businessman but maybe too much business.

Hopefully Microsoft will put life back into the world, because it sure is an awesome one as anyone who's played the 16-bit games knows.

Day 1 Studios is going to do a good job with it, wouldn't hurt to hype the game up to keep it off the chopping block. MS has been cutting down internal development lately and you really want to see this game come out. If you can imagine the best of all current popular genres blended together...wow, I mean the potential is endless.

This is doubtful. I recently interviewed Tony Van, who both designed and produced the Genesis game and he basically said that he had nothing to do with the version on Sega CD. FASA did the Sega CD version on their own and if there's a new game coming, he isn't involved.

The Sega version came after the SNES version. Both were based on IP's founded by FASA Corporation in the form of a pen-and-paper RPG, so Tony Van's involvement (or lack thereof) has no bearing on the future of the Shadowrun franchise.

would rock even more if they could get the cyberpunk aesthetics right, i just dont trust western developers' aesthetic sensibilities.
