Playground Games co-founder and former studio head: "Horizon. That's the game we have to beat."

Unreal and Open World :messenger_expressionless:

Anyway - Leamington Spa is still low-cost enough to spin up 200 man studio just like that - I wonder why Ubi never made a studio there...
Ubisoft did have a studio there. They bought Freestyle games ages ago which became Ubisoft Leamington. They closed it down recently.

Horizon. Looking for something to eat.

Apart from the Assetto Corsa franchise, I haven't seen a single UE (or 5) based racing game yet, arcade or sim, that is good or critically acclaimed.

Even that recent indie drifting game, Japanese Drift Master (or something), seems to be underwhelming.

These guys are shooting for the stars. They can because of the talent they have, but MS and Forza Horizon being their main competitor seems a little too much.

Beating out Turn 10 and main sim series seems to be a big task in itself, but Horizon? It's the only Xbox IP that has literally 90+ MC in every iteration from the start of the franchise a decade ago.

Unless you're Sony, Nintendo or a big pubslisher, it's going to be a near impossible task, at least from a marketing standpoint.

Their only hope is for the game to go viral by word of mouth/streamers and then the world takes notice.

I understand him. Forza Horizon 5 is by all metrics a great game, but I started to feel a bit fatigued already after FH4. The games are so similar, the formula felt "done". I would love to see a new street racer like PGR again. Being starved on this genre I finally got Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown this year. It's fine, the racing itself is not bad at all, but I don't care much for the clan bs. I just want to race.

What wrong with UE5 and open world? Its the best third party engine no?

Unreal Engine is a risky choice for a racing game. Some games like MotoGP have made it work but for others like WRC it was a death sentence.

The racing genre demands smooth control at all times. This isn't an adventure game where a stutter can occur while you're farting around the map so it doesn't really matter, or a turn-based game where the urgency of player inputs can take a back seat.

One momentary lapse in control in a racing game and it's just over.
We've let it come to this. What other popular engines are out there other than UE and Unity?

Studios that relied on their own engines in the past are slowly abandoning them and it's even worse for a new studio without that choice.

Seriously when is China/tencent gonna get around to launching their own console. They own so much of the industry now, and with microsoft stepping back it feel an opportune time.

Let them cook; it will be glorious. I seriously believe Tencent is large enough to shake the market. At the very least, we'll gain a competitor to Sony in the home console space.

I think a Forza Horizon type game with actual game design and progression instead of just assaulting you with endless money and cars would be very welcome.

It would be tough to top FH in terms of sheer content, map design, and graphical quality though.
I sort of want either a blur racing game or motorstorm destructing like game .those r only 2 tht would intrest me.blur was so underrated i could play tht game for days

GT and NfS sold 10+ million in their most successful releases? Both are probably below Mario Kart, but I would have assumed these two are easily number 2 and 3. In total numbers and revenue.
Is FH extremely successful in microtransactions to actually be higher in revenue? Or how would it have higher revenue than these racing giants which were always on PC, PS too (and Nintendo as well)

Forza Horizon 5 alone had over 40 million players before even being announced for PS5.

As for making a Horizon competitor, I would aim for making it far more grounded. Horizon 5 was fun for a while but the whole "smash across a field in a multi million dollar supercar while covering your controller in drool" gets old quickly for me.

One approach that would instantly make it massive if the others do not feature it would be building in ai chips specifically optimised towards realtime ai restyling of on screen content with some user controls. Effectively an instant remastering machine, that can also allow you to at the click of a button turn code into an anime game, or make retro resident evil look real. We're extremely close now to be able to do that.

Did not know that. So MS has an exceptionally successful recent game after all. It seems it is listed nowhere though since MS does not report sales numbers and rather talk about the less meaningfull players number.
