Shenmue Online = Development halted

Shenmue Online developer JC entertainment announced that it has halted any further development on Sega's Shenmue Online. Without giving any details as to why, the Korean developer said it has not worked on the game since May earlier this year. Whether the project is scrubbed altogether or just temporarly on hiatus is not clear, so let hope SEGA sheds some light on the matter soon. Shenmue Online is a MMO Action/RPG based on the Dreamcast Shenmue franchise, and was scheduled to launch this year.

so...it seems the dream is dead now (again).

Can't say I'm surprised. Shenmue fans (at least me) did not care the slightest about this game, and MMORPG fans didn't either.
WTF has Yu Suzuki been doing since he left AM2?

Hopefully? Did the Shenmue series kill your dog or something?

I think the two games are absolutely boring and not fun at all.

I'd rather see Sega spend time on something worthwhile.

Don't insult me like that.

You think it's boring, I think it's the best games ever. So let us deluded Shenmue fans in peace ;)

Shenmue 2 was fantastic, i also wonder why on earth Sega/Yu decided to make a Shemue MMORPG. Makes no sense

Shenmue 3 on 360 or PS3 please

Shenmue 3 will one day come out. I seriously don't think Yu would let his baby die like that.

Sadly, I don't think he'll have a choice. He mentioned something about a book at one point, but I don't think that'll even happen unless he writes it himself. Not that it'd be all that good anyway. It's all about the game.

I can't wait to read about Ryo's adventures of sailor hunting in page-by-page detail!

"How about a game of Lucky Hit?" Ryo said in his best businessman voice.
"Were you born stupid, or does it just run in the family?"
Ryo was shocked and appalled by the man's profound statement.
"How about a game of Lucky Hit?"

Well I think after VF5 comes out I think he'll get around to it. Or is that just me hoping?

:lol

Does Yu Suzuki really need to be working on something at all times, though?

Maybe he's spending some time on the mean streets of Japan in his Ferrari at night, flashing his headlights at young punks in trumped-up Civics. That would explain where the money for Shenmue Online came from.

:D This project was doomed from day one. Now they can make Forsaken a contemporary MMORPG in which Sega fans can work together in attempt to infiltrate Sega corporate and destroy the evil management who mishandled countless properties and failed to deliver sequels to beloved franchises.

Makes sense to me since the MMO business in asia is already when you have top offerings from NCsoft, Blizzar, SE, SOE. Even though Shenmue Online is a bold undertaking for SEGA, IMO theres just too many competition for this make a place in a already crowed market.

One thing that get me though, what would become of the $28 million investement SEGA put into it. The best I could say...

Shenmue = SEGA money leech

In the end, Shenmue is one franchise SEGA should just bury, and do it indefinitley.

« 4Gamer.net, a Japanese PC Gaming site, reported JCE confirmed the development
of Shenmue Online had come to a halt. JCE hasn't revealed the reason yet, but they
said they'd be able to make some announcement next week.

http://www.4gamer.net/news/history/2005.08/20050803145029detail.html

A Korean gaming site, thisisgame.com, says the development has stopped around May.
According to them, SEGA has asked a Taiwanese company to develope the game.

4Gamer says they asked SEGA about this and SEGA confirmed that the development
had stopped, but they said they didn't have much information, as SEGA (Shanghai)
Software is in charge of this matter. And said they'd let us know when they're ready. »

Between JCE and Sega, there was frequently a collision about the perfection of 'Shenmue Online'. JCE was not able to comply to the request of Digital Rex with Yutaka Suzuki known by the height of the perfection of the work.

Taiwanese studios are specialised in online games so Sega-JCE want to reduce the cost and you know Yu Suzuki he always wants the perfection. I hope it won't be cancelled like True Fantasy Online.

Respect for BlimBlim because he said he'd buy any console the day Shenmue III was available: ++++++++

Yeah, no one ever gave two shits about Shenmue Online. Most fans were just offended that III wasn't in development. Clearly, it was a cash-in opportunity. Sega refused to greenlight internal development of the third game. Some Korean company didn't want to have to start up their own IP. A deal was brokered.

So is Suzuki completely out of AM2, like that one guy said? If that's the case, then fuck. Even if Shenmue III came out, without Suzuki it'd feel like fan fiction.

Digital Rex is the company that was said to be working on the shenmue license instead of AM2. http://www.digitalrex.jp/ sure links to the official shenmue.com page.

Shenue Shenmue Shenmue Shenmue RawckS! Not only does the game rock, and would make a lot of people happy, but on the flipside, you guys will no longer be able to make your jokes. It's horrible to see it die on all sides. Do you want 6.8 to remain relavent? Come on! Anyway, don't care for shenmue online. Waste of text to even mention it. Get Shenmue III going. I could almost gurantee a Shenmue III done by Yu Suzuki and co. would be one of the top 3 games out there as far as graphics, the day it's released.
